From “Data Shantytowns” to “Digital Urbanism”
How to share and reuse data with
transparency and security
Gustavo Giorgetti
The Rural setting (1912) The urban setting (2012)
OWN space (I don’t share) Electricity, gas, water (self-sufficient)
Living alone I have to get on well with myself
OWN and SHARED spaces Public services for electricity, gas, water (dependent)
Living with others I have to get on well with the others
From the countryside to the city
Coexistence
Ken Orr
The coexistence needs Rules… otherwise
But which rules to use … without affecting individual rights?
• Territory →
• Urbanism
regulations →
(rules to build)
• Public services →
(water, electricity, gas, security,
transport, etc.)
Digital urbanism (data)
• Accessible DATA
from own sources
• Rules to allow to
share, audit and
reuse DATA
• Digital Public
Services (connectivity,
authentication, log information,
security, auditory, etc.)
As citizens, what do we share the most apart of space?
Physical urbanism(space)
Nowadays RULES to share data are inadequate…
GOVERNMENT
BODIES.
THE FOOTPRINTS
OF CITIZENS’
PILGRIMAGE
Very nice theory, but about reality? 1. STOP PILGRIMAGE, STOP USING PHOTOCOPIES!
2. STOP QUEUING, WE WANT COMPLETE AND
EFFICIENT PROCEEDINGS USING INTERNET!
3. I WANT TO DEAL WITH ALL MY PAPERWORK USING
ONLY ONE PORTAL!

What achievements do we reach when defining adequate rules?
Digital urbanism
Digital urbanism are rules to share DATA:
Allow to REUSE data by means of 3 FREEDOM facilities:
1. Freedom to share my data
2. Freedom to control and audit legal use of my data
3. Freedom to build new uses of my data
Allows COEXISTENCE ALLOWING DIVERSITY:
1. diversity of actors (public and private)
2. diversity of developments (legacy and new ones)
3. diversity of technologies (open and proprietary)
