Digital storytelling
• The use of computer-based tools to tell a story, incorporating– Narrative– Images– Sound– Video
• Typically has a strong emotional component. • Can be instructional, persuasive, historical, or reflective and
can be effectively applied to nearly any subject. • Gives the storyteller enormous creative latitude.• Although groups of students can collaborate on digital stories,
it is best suited to projects by individual users.
Requirements
• A recording device and microphone• Software to manipulate images and video (e.g.
Movie Maker)• Software to add sound (e.g. Audacity)
Steps
1. Begin with a script. 2. Assemble rich media (audio
effects/images/animations/ video etc.) to support the ideas and emotions in that script
3. Beware of intellectual property issues and copywrite!4. Piece together and edit the digital story, creating a
short movie, usually about two to ten minutes long. 5. Once completed, the story may be uploaded to the
internet so it is available to an international audience.
Benefits• Lets students express themselves in their own words and
voice – fosters a sense of individuality and of “owning” their creations
• They develop proficiency with multimedia applications• They learn to think critically about effective combinations of
audio and visual elements. • Each story challenges a student to cull artefacts (from
personal collections or from other resources) that meaningfully support the story and to assemble them in a way that achieves the desired effect.
• In doing so, students develop a discerning eye for online resources, increasing their technology and media literacy.
• Digital stories are a natural fit for e-portfolios
Uses in Education
• Teachers can use digital storytelling:– to introduce projects, themes, or any content area– to help facilitate class discussions – as an anticipatory set for a new topic– to help students gain a better understanding of more
abstract concepts
• These stories can become an integral part of any lesson in many subject areas.
• Students can use it to make their own digital stories and then share them.
