Meeting Common Core State Standards This Really Good Stuff ® Digital Citizenship Posters Set is aligned with the following Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: Research to Build and Present Knowledge CCRA.W.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism. W.3.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic. W.4.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. W.5.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. Displaying and Preparing the Digital Citizenship Posters Set Before displaying the Digital Citizenship Posters Set, make copies of this Really Good Stuff ® Activity Guide and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Separate the Posters along the perforated lines and hang them where students will be able to see and interact with them easily. Introducing the Digital Citizenship Posters Set Ask students what it means to be a citizen. Evaluate student responses and explain that a citizen is someone who legally belongs to a country and has the rights and protection of that country. Then tell students that you can also define a citizen as a resident of a town or city or as a member of a community, and with that membership comes both rights and responsibilities. Responsible members of communities make efforts to keep their communities safe and clean. Explain to students that every time they report suspicious behavior in their neighborhoods, follow traffic rules, and don’t litter, they are behaving like responsible citizens. Next ask students to raise their hands if they use technology. Then solicit from students how they use technology. Explain that when they use the Internet to research, chat, post photos, or participate in any form of social media, they become citizens of a digital community. And like citizenship in a physical community, digital citizenship comes with certain rights and responsibilities. Online behavior should be both respectful and cautious. Direct students’ attention to the Digital Citizenship Posters Set and review how the information on the Posters emphasizes behaviors that will help them be successful digital citizens. Dear Diary Copy and distribute the Digital Diary Reproducible. Direct students’ attention to the Posters Set and review the information featured on the Common Sense and Safety Posters. Go through the content on the reproducible and discuss appropriate responses with students. Consider making extra copies of the reproducible to keep near any of the electronic resources that students can access in the classroom. Advise students to complete a copy of the reproducible whenever they use these resources to help them practice being responsible digital citizens. The Three C’s Copy and distribute The Three C’s Reproducible. Direct students’ attention to the Posters Set and review the information featured on the Information Poster . Tell students that The Three C’s Reproducible will help them practice responsible digital citizenship when they gather information. Preview the content on the reproducible and discuss the types of responses that students can include on each line. Consider providing students with a sample of appropriate MLA citation for web sites. Remind students to make notes of important information, including the author or editor name(s), the article title, the title of the web site, project, or book, the publisher name, the publishing date, the date they accessed the site, and the URL.
