The DigiSTREAMER Seismic Recording System is the next generation data acquisition platform for ION Marine Imaging Systems’ solid streamers. The DigiSTREAMER Seismic Recording System incorporates leading technology and architecture to ensure expansion of channel capacity as customers’ needs grow. This system functions in conjunction with DigiSTREAMER Electronic Modules to provide superior collection of data supporting in excess of 20 streamers and/or 19,200 channels at 1 ms. An advanced user-interface with a hands-off approach increases efficiency and automation by providing quick and easy monitoring as well as quality-controlling of all in-water equipment. The Power Supply Controller allows user control of industry strandard 2.8KW switching power supplies with the added benefits of a precision DC GFI safety shutdown and active balancing of the isolated output to reduce cable voltage stress. It connects to the Streamer Telemetry Interface Chassis.

The Auxiliary Distribution Box provides the interface for transmitting electrical signals from the shipboard systems to the in-water streamer. Either rack-mounted or bulkhead-mounted, the box connects between the Recording System Streamer Telemetry Interface, the Streamer Power Supply, Positioning Control System (PCS), and other auxiliary equipment such as the ION DigiFIN™ lateral control system, and the Deck Cable which connects to the streamer assembly. Auxiliary streamer signals are available, using standard bayonet-type connectors. The same signals are available at the monitoring jacks on the Auxiliary Distribution Box’s front panel. The Auxiliary Distribution Box Cable Kit includes all cables that are required for interfacing to the Recording System and related recording room equipment.

The DigiSTREAMER Slip Ring is a custom-designed electrical rotary joint which handles all electrical signals required for DigiSTREAMER. It connects the DigiSTREAMER electrical deck cables to the electrical connectors on the Forward Lead-in Module. It is designed to mount into small cable reel spindles. A Slip Ring Bypass Cable is available for troubleshooting purposes.

The DigiSTREAMER Lead-in is an armored streamer-towing cable that transmits optical data and electrical signals between the streamer and the vessel. It operates between the Forward Lead-in Module and the Boot Adaptor. A double-armor design consists of two layers of galvanized-steel armor wires wound in opposite directions to balance any torque applied to the cable. Lengths from 100 m to 1,500 m are available. A polyester hair fairing braided over the outer jacket dampens cable motion and reduces strumming.

The tow point on this cable for wide-tow applications requires the use of bend restrictors and swiveling tow clamps to handle transmitting the off-axis load into the cable as well as the resultant torque such loading could produce if not relieved. The Boot Adapter provides a towing location for the spread device’s tow clamps and the associated bend restrictors and pre-formed rod sets. The Boot Adapter protects the longer, more-costly lead-in from wear-and-tear damage. It attaches between the Lead-in and the Aft Lead-in Module. Spare Boot Adapter sections are more-easily stocked onboard as compared to long lead-ins and are operationally easier and faster to replace when a failure occurs. Asset and freight costs are reduced because the Boot Adapter minimizes the number of failures on the longer lead-in. The forward termination of this short lead-in is flexible, allowing it to conform to the cable reel’s contour.

The seismic (receiver-array) streamer section forms part of ION’s DigiSTREAMER integrated data acquisition system. Located directly after the Head Stretch, this section contains two FSK coils with positive position front and rear collar mounts. Forward and Aft Active Sections alternate between Data Acquisition Modules.

The FSK Repeater Module is used to restore communications signal fidelity and perform diagnostics on the FSK transmission lines of DigiSTREAMER. This increases the maximum distance of communication to external devices such as CompassBirds, Acoustics, and Velocimeters, from 6 km to 12 km. Up to two FSK Repeater Modules can be installed among Active Sections. The regenerative technique of repeating signals restores the signal levels without increasing the background noise levels. Diagnostics may be performed from the ION PCS operator's console to graphically analyze communication characteristics of external devices along the cable. The built-in pattern generator feature can be programmed to drive mark, space, and alternating ones patterns on the communication lines to aid in finding electrical faults. Current sensors will not need any modification to function with this system. An upgrade to the dry-end software and firmware will allow the user to communicate with the repeater module in diagnostics mode.

The Streamer Tail Interface Cable connects after the Tail Swivel section. It has an armored cable that provides a high-strength link to tow larger tail buoys. Power and data pass-through wires are provided to enable tail buoy instrumentation. A polyfoam outer jacket provides buoyancy and long life protection. The armored cable has special breakable steel links designed to separate the tail buoy under excessive tension.

The Tail Buoy Power Regulator provides a nominal 12- and 24-volt DC supply for use by tail buoy mounted equipment. Typical uses are a strobe light, GPS receiver, and ION DigiRANGE™ acoustic devices. Power is provided from the DigiSTREAMER streamer by connection to the required Tail Buoy Jumper Cable. An internal battery pack provides enough back-up power to last over a day (assuming 18-watt average load) without DigiSTREAMER streamer power. The battery is easily removed from the unit to allow charging in a safe well-ventilated location. The charger is especially suited for recharging the supplied discharged battery.
