Are You Looking for a Circle of Friends? A Small Group May Be the Answer. Here at Denbigh United we have several Small Groups and are eager to start more. A Small

Group is a group of 6-12 people who meet weekly or every other week for Bible study/discussion,

prayer, fellowship and service. Deep and abiding friendships can grow in these groups as believers

student God’s Word and support one another.

Our existing groups are listed below. If you are interested in an existing group or in being a

part of a new group, please contact Deborah Dail or Tim Jacoby.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 6:30-8 p.m. This group meets at the church and

childcare is provided. The facilitator is Kristi Spivey, and the group is currently studying

The Five Love Languages of Children. For information, call Kristi at (757) 814-9538.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of

Dale and Keith Pennell. The group discusses the Sunday sermons. For more information,

contact Dale Pennell at (757) 303-7762.

Wednesday evenings (every week) at 7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of Tim and

Debbie Jacoby. The group is studying Angels Among Us. For more information, contact

Tim Jacoby at (412) 720-4808.

The Adult Bible Class is taught by Jay Dunn and Bob Young. During the spring quarter (March

through May) the Adult Bible Class will be studying a variety of Old and New Testament books with

an emphasis on exploring the connections between Jesus and the Hebrew Scriptures. The class

meets Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the Fellowship Room.

The Ladies Discussion Group will start a new Bible Study Series on March 9, 2014, entitled Where

Faith and Culture Meet. This series of six DVDs and the study book, will engage you in Bible study

discussion regarding bold ways to discover God’s challenge in each of us - to minister to our

culture - and what that means to you. If interested in joining us, please contact Amy Schmidt at

[email protected], or sign up on the sheet at the church office. This will allow us time to

obtain the needed study books prior to starting the study. This class meets at 9:15 on Sunday

mornings in the Parlor.

Living as a Committed Christian in the Kingdom in the 21st Century Class

Beginning March 30, we will be offering a third Adult Sunday School class. This class, featuring a

small group discussion/seminar format, will use relevant Scripture to consider the implications of

how a Christian might deal with such issues as: healthcare, poverty, affluence, inequality, education,

individualism and community, human rights, diversity, violence, the Jesus of the Gospels, Christian

responsibilities, and other issues that might surface or become prominent in the news. Mike Langrehr

will facilitate this class which will meet in the Library. Please join us on March 30 at 9:15 a.m.

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that we are now entering the season of Lent. This year our Lenten Sermon

Series is titled The Via Dolorosa: People We Meet on The Way. The Via Dolorosa refers to the

“Way of Grief,” “Way of Sorrows, “Way of Suffering” or “Painful Way”. Specifically, it refers to the

street in Jerusalem believed to be the path that Jesus walked, carrying his cross on the way to his

crucifixion.

In our sermon series we will study the people whom Jesus met on the way to the cross, how

Jesus affected their lives and how they affected his. Each person and each encounter has something to

teach us which we can apply to our daily lives.

This year we will have three worship services on Easter Sunday, April 20. We will have our

Sunrise Service and Breakfast at 6:30 a.m. We will have a 9 a.m. and a 10:30 am. worship service,

both of which will include the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

We begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, March 5 with a holy service of worship at 7:30 p.m. in

the sanctuary. We hope you will attend.

Listed below are the biblical characters we will meet on our journey through Lent.

The Via Dolorosa: People We Meet on the Way Series

Friends in Christ, I look forward to what we will learn and how we will grow during the Season of

Lent. Let us journey forward with sincere and faithful hearts in the season ahead.

In Christ, Deborah

2014 Lenten Devotionals

This year’s Lenten devotionals are titled Cross-Bound. You may pick up your copy of the

devotional from the round table in the Narthex. We suggest a donation of 50 cents, if you are able.

We encourage you to practice the spiritual discipline of daily scripture reading, reflection and prayer

during Lent.

THRIVE Peninsula formerly

D.U.C.O. (Denbigh United

Christian Outreach) is in critical

need of food supplies. Each week

the need is greater than the week

before. We thank you in advance

for all of your support. You may

bring your food donations to

church and place them on the

kitchen counter where they are

picked up and taken to D.U.C.O.

each week.

SOLE-ful support!

If you can’t walk a mile in their shoes then this is the best way to help! Thank you

for the generous donations of your new or gently worn (any size) shoes to

THRIVE Peninsula formerly Denbigh United Christian Outreach (DUCO). Your

shoe donations received in the bin marked “Shoes” in the Narthex were beyond any

expectations we could have imagined. Thanks for your SOLE-ful support!

S.H.A.R.E. Dates for February

March 2014 S.H.A.R.E. orders will be placed the week of March 3-7.

The March orders will be distributed in the Narthex area of Denbigh

United Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 22 from 7:00-7:30

AM. All orders must be picked up by 7:30 AM on each distribution

date. Volunteers cannot be held responsible for orders which are not

picked up.

DUPC PrimeTimers will work at the Food

Bank on Saturday, March 22. Please contact

Ken Bowers for additional information.

The 2014 FoodBank Volunteer Schedule is now posted on the bulletin board near the kitchen

counter. Please make note of when your group (e.g., PimeTimers, Youth, etc.) is scheduled.

Thank you to Ken Bowers for developing the schedule again this year.

On a regular schedule, Denbigh United Presbyterian Church conducts a service at The

Gardens at Warwick Forest. The next service is Monday, March 31at 10:00 AM. This is a

multi-center facility for those who are in nursing care, rehabilitation, and hospice. The

worship service lasts for approximately thirty minutes and includes all the elements

enjoyed during our Sunday Services. We need volunteers to sing, read, or just visit with

those who attend. It is a blessing to all and a great opportunity to reach out to those who

cannot normally attend Christian services. For more information or if you would like to

help, please contact Rusty Norton (cell 757-814-1091 or email

[email protected]). Blessings to all, Rusty Norton

SUMMER CAMP Makemie Woods offers a great summer camping program for kids entering first

grade through High School. Campers enjoy new adventures in a radically accept-

ing Christian community, surrounded by nature. Many parents and campers

continue to tell us about how their lives have been affected and changed by the

camp experience.

The camp’s online registration program greatly enhances and streamlines the

process, reducing postage costs and wasted paper. Returning campers are able to

register quickly with just a few clicks, and first-timers have an easier means of

selecting programs that meet their schedules. Registration is live, both online

and in paper format - don't wait to sign up, popular sessions fill fast.

Are you a graduate or do you have a

graduate in your family? We have set Sunday, June 1 to celebrate and pray for the

graduates in worship. We need your help to make this a meaningful

celebration. Please call the church office at 877-2048 to confirm your

graduate can attend the events on June 1. We know that many are

working and traveling, but we are hopeful that the day might be cleared

on schedules.

Please submit to the church office several pictures of your

graduate (ideas are the senior picture, one from a church event, a baby

picture etc.). We need these photos by May 4. Also, please complete

an information form with details about your graduate and his/her future

plans for inclusion in the Graduate Brochure.

Mark your Calendars! Vacation Bible School is scheduled for

June 23-27 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The closing program will be June 29

during the worship service, followed by a family picnic.

Kids will experience the wonders of God at Vacation Bible

School, Workshop of Wonder: Imagine and Build with God! Children

will become Visioneers and explore how the ordinary becomes extraordi-

nary with God and will experience the love of Jesus.

We are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help in any

way (building the set, making props, drama, just to name a few) we have

a job for everyone! Please contact Liz Marshall or Denise Thurston.

Pre-Kindergarten February was a fun month at DPPK. The three year old classes were

working on shapes, numbers, and the colors pink and red. The 2 ½ year old class made special snowmen to take home to share with their families. Both groups talked about love and passed out valentines to their friends.

Our four year olds learned about Presidents and how to stay healthy. February is Heart Health Month, so we had a visit from an orthopedic nurse, with her skeleton friend, Mr. Bones. It is also Dental Health Month, so a dental hygienist from Dr. Avent’s and Dr. Huie’s dental practice came to talk about how to keep our teeth healthy.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank the congregation and the preschool board for their expressions of sympathy for the recent death of my mother. I could feel that my family was wrapped in prayer and concern. Your kinds words, cards, attendance at the funeral and rose bush really meant a lot to me. Maggie Vincelette, Director
