SLEEPING OR LYING

A bed ( listen ) is a piece of furniture used as a place to sleep orrelax. It has a secondary use as a place to engage in sexualrelations. Most modern beds consist of a soft mattress on a bed frame, withthe mattress resting either on a solid base, often wooden slats, ora sprung base. In North America many beds include a box springinner sprungbase, a large mattress sizedbox containing woodand springs that provide additional support and suspension forthe mattress. Beds are available in many sizes, ranging frominfant sizedbassinets and cribs, small beds for a single child oradult, to large queen and king-sizebeds designed for two adults.BED

While most beds are single mattresses on a fixed frame, there areother varieties, such as the Murphy bed, which folds into a wall, the sofa bed, which folds out of a sofa, and the bunk bed, which provides two mattresses on two tiers. Temporary beds include the inflatable airmattress and the folding camp cot. Some beds contain neither a padded mattress nor a bed frame, such asthe hammock.Beds may have a headboard for resting against, with others also having side rails and footboards (or"footers"). "Headboard only" beds may incorporate a "dust ruffle", "bed skirt", or "valance sheet" to hidethe bed frame. To support the head, a pillow made of a soft, padded material is usually placed on the topof the mattress. Some form of covering blanket is often used to insulate the sleeper, often bed sheets, aquilt, or a duvet, collectively referred to as bedding. Bedding is the removable nonfurnitureportion of abed, which enables these components to be washed or aired out.

A canopy bed is a decorative bed somewhat similar to a fourposterbed.A typical canopy bed usually features posts at each of the four cornersextending four feet high or more above the mattress. Ornate ordecorative fabric is often draped across the upper space between theposts and a solid swath of cloth may create a ceiling, or canopy directlyover the bed.CANOPY BED

A bunk bed is a type of bed in which one bed frame is stackedon top of another. The nature of bunk beds allows two or morepeople to sleep in the same room while maximizing availablefloor space for activities. This leads to them being used in placeswith limited floor space, such as on ships and in army garrisonsor in places where floor space needs to be maximized, such asdormitories, summer camp cabins, hostels, children's rooms, prison cells, or university residence halls.Bunk beds are normally supported by four poles or pillars, one ateach corner of the bed. A ladder is used to get to the upper bed, which is normally surrounded by a railing to prevent the sleeperfrom falling out. Some models also have a privacy curtain for thelower bunk. Because of the need for a ladder and the height ofthe bed, the top bunk of a bunk bed is not recommended forchildren under six years of age.A loft bed is an elevated bed similar to a bunk bed, but withoutthe lower beds freeingfloor space for other furniture (such as adesk) which might be built into the loft bed.BUNK

However sofa beds that are two personcouches are alsoavailable. These types of sofa beds are known as loveseat sleepers. They are known as loveseats sincethe smaller size means one needs to be comfortable with how close they will be to the person next tothem.

A platform bed, also known as a cabin bed, is a bed the base of which consists of a raised, level, usually rectangular horizontal solid frame, often with a section consisting of rows of flexible woodenslats or latticed structure meant to support just a mattress. This platform provides adequate, flexiblesupport and ventilation for a mattress by itself, eliminating the need for a box springor a secondmattress as a foundation.PLATFORM BED

An infant bed (commonly referred to as a cot in British English, and in American English a crib or far less commonly a cradle orstock) is a small bed specifically for infants and very youngchildren. Infant beds are a historically recent developmentintended to contain a child capable of standing. The cagelikedesign of infant beds restricts the child to the bed. Around two orthree years of age, children are able to climb out and are movedto a toddler bed to prevent an injurious fall while escaping thebed.Infant beds are commonly seen in countries affected byWesternization, employed by the majority of parents as analternative to sharing a bed or due to cultural norms.INFANT
