A. Estimating the Desirable Body Weight ( DBW )   Infants :   a. First 6 months DBW (gms ) = Birth weight (gms) + ( Age in months x

600 )   7 to 12 months . DBW (gms) = Birth weight (gms ) + ( Age in

months x 500 )

◦ DBW ( kg ) = ( Age in months divided 2 ) + 3

Page 3: Dietary Calculations

INFANT’S WEIGHT -doubles at 5 to 6 months

triples at 12 monthsquadruples at 24 months

HEIGHT OR LENGTH = increases by 24, 12, and 8 cm during the first, second and third year, respectively, then by 4 cm every year thereafter up to the eight years.

Page 4: Dietary Calculations

 Children DBW (kg) = ( Age in years x 2 ) + 8

+ 2 kg for every year Adultsa. Body Mass Index – Based Formula

*For men 5 feet ( 1.52 cm ) tall, DBW =112 lbs(51kg )

*For women 5 feet( 1.52 cm) tall, DBW = 106 lb (48kg)

* For both sexes, add 4 lbs ( 1.8 kg ) for every inch above 5 feet

Page 5: Dietary Calculations

b. Alternative Methods

* Tannhauser’s MethodMeasure height in centimeters

Deduct from this the factor 100, answer is the DBW ln kg.DBW (kg) obtained applies to Filipino status by taking off

10%.

* Adapted method - For 5 ft used 106 lbs. For every inch above 5 ft, add 5 lbs.

1. Infants : TER = 120 – 110 kcal / KDBWChildren:TER / day = 1000 + ( 100 x age in years )

Adolescents13 – 15 = 55 ( boys ) 45 ( girls )16 –19 = 45 ( boys ) 40 ( girls )

Page 7: Dietary Calculations

4. Adults: Basal Metabolic needs = 1 cal/K DBW/ hr + Physical Activity = % above basal  Method I ( Cooper et al ) Method II ( Krause

) Bed rest 10 % 27.55 % Sedentary 30 30 Light 50 35 Moderate 75 40 Heavy 100 45

Pregnant women: TER / day = Normal requirement + 300 kcal

Lactating womenTER /day = Normal requirement + 500 Kcal

Method I – by percentage distribution Carbohydrate50 – 70 % or average of 60% Protein Infants 10%ChildrenAdolescent

Adults 10 – 12%

FatNormal adults 20-25 %Children, adolescents 30- 25%

Page 9: Dietary Calculations

Method II – Determine the protein calories first according to the normal allowance in

gm/ k DBW, then divide the non=protein calories ( NPC) ito

Carbohydrate = 55 – 80 % or an average of 70%

Fat = 20 - 45 % or an average of 30%

Normal protein allowance / day: Infant 1.6 gm / KDBWChildren 1.5Adolescents 1.2 Adults 1.1
