Diegetic Sound

Its sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film such as the voice of the character, sound made by objects in the scene etc.

Examples in films:

1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6hnxtl4g9M - This movie plays around with diegetic and non-

diegetic sound it begins with non-diegetic music in the background but then ends when the

character is introduced. The character is brushing his teeth, we can hear the sound of the brush but

at the same time there is a voice over that that the character also hears and reacts to it.

2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzUU7SRRsGo – This movie has a better use of diegetic sound,

the audience and the characters can hear the sound of the car. After one of the character inserts a

cassette. We hear the music play through the car stereo along with the characters si nging, the

characters hear the music and so does the audience.

3- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyJoG9TcUQ – The music we hear at the beginning can be

seen as non-dietetic sound but as the scene continues the audience get to know where the source

is. The music comes out a boombox that the character is holding.
