PRO FOOTBALL | PATRIOTS 34, FALCONS 28 | OVERTIME

Patriots Mount aComeback for the

Ages to Win aFifth Super Bowl

By BEN SHPIGEL FEB. 5, 2017

HOUSTON — The chants rang out loud and long at NRG Stadium in SouthTexas, not from bars or living rooms across New England, until a wall of soundenveloped a team and a quarterback on a mission. “Brady, Brady,” the fansscreamed, and it is in moments like this — the first overtime in Super Bowlhistory — that Tom Brady appears most comfortable, as if lounging on his sofain his beloved Uggs.

In each of his previous four Super Bowl victories, Brady guided game-winning drives for the Patriots. However sublime, those efforts against theRams, the Panthers, the Eagles and the Seahawks all seemed quaint beforeSunday night.

That is when Brady again summoned the sorcery of his right arm to stunthe Atlanta Falcons in what is undoubtedly the greatest late surge in a SuperBowl. When James White sneaked into the end zone from 2 yards away,

Page 9: Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? If so, did the team you … · 2017-02-10 · The -ment suffix is the result or act of, If it's in containment, it's the result of being packed

completing a 34-28 victory that defied the bounds of credulity and secured thePatriots’ fifth title, his teammates stormed onto the field, flung their helmetsand hugged anyone who moved.

Across the field, the Falcons watched from their sideline as if fossilized inamber, too exhausted and dumbstruck to move.

The Patriots trailed by 25 points with 2 minutes 12 seconds remaining in thethird quarter — and by 19 with 9:48 left in regulation — and they won.

They won because of Dont’a Hightower’s critical strip-sack and JulianEdelman’s Velcro hands and the clock management and coaching of amaestro, Bill Belichick, but mostly because of a truism that has beleagueredthe league’s other 31 teams for 16 years running: the Patriots have Brady, andno one else does, not even the Falcons, who boasted the N.F.L.’s most valuableplayer in Matt Ryan.

Not including their 3-second possession at the end of regulation, thePatriots, after mustering only a field goal on their first seven drives, scored ontheir final five possessions.

“At halftime, I would say we weren’t down at all,” Brady said. “We weredisappointed in the way we played, and we knew that we could go out and do alot better in the second half.”

Brady completed 43 of 62 passes for 466 yards, with two touchdowns andan interception, a performance that earned him Super Bowl M.V.P. honors forthe fourth time in his career. In none of the other three instances did hehandle a season as challenging as this, from the illness plaguing his mother,Galynn, to the four-game suspension served for his role in that protracted sagaknown as Deflategate, after the underinflated footballs meant to give him athrowing advantage.

In accepting the Vince Lombardi Trophy from Commissioner Roger

Goodell, who meted out the punishment, the owner Robert K. Kraft did notoutright address the scandal. But he did allude it to it in perhaps the strongestpossible terms.

“A lot has transpired in the last two years, and I don’t think that needsany explanation,” Kraft said.

Because of that, he said, this title is “unequivocally the sweetest.”

His reputation sullied, Brady embarked on a nationwide tour ofvindication that reached its climax in the venue where he won his secondSuper Bowl, back in February 2004, long before the Patriots achieved moderndynasty status in an era designed to encourage parity.

Brady was 26 then, and it is possible that he is now superior in all facets, six months shy of his 40th birthday, at an age when most of his peers haveeither retired or entered a noticeable decline. By going 3-1 during hissuspension, the Patriots created the farcical perception that they no longerneeded him — that quarterbacks in New England’s ruthless machinery areinterchangeable, even Brady.

He turbocharged the Patriots’ offense with 33 touchdowns to fourinterceptions heading into Sunday, when he toiled, misfiring wide and long, until late in the third quarter.

Powered by three touchdowns in a 9:54 span of the second quarter,Atlanta led by 28-9 with 10 minutes left before the Patriots unleashed 10minutes of mayhem.

Hightower’s strip-sack catalyzed the comeback, with Brady capitalizing onexcellent field position to find Danny Amendola from 6 yards out. Less than 6minutes remained, and though the Falcons advanced deep into New Englandterritory, a holding penalty knocked them out of field-goal range, forcing themto punt.

Page 11: Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? If so, did the team you … · 2017-02-10 · The -ment suffix is the result or act of, If it's in containment, it's the result of being packed

Except that the Patriots did, in fact, stop Atlanta on all four fourth-quarter possessions, empowering Brady with two timeouts and 3:30 left, chasing an 8-point deficit. They marched 91 yards on a drive extended by areception by Edelman as absurd as the comeback itself, one that evoked somany catches of past New England Super Bowls.

Only this time, instead of watching opponents do the impossible — DavidTyree hugging the ball against his helmet or Mario Manningham tiptoeingalong the sideline or Jermaine Kearse contorting himself — it was the Patriotswho amazed. While falling, Edelman caught a tipped pass, then dropped it,then cradled the ball just before it would have touched the ground.

“It was one of the greatest catches I’ve ever seen,” Brady said. “I don’tknow how the hell he caught it. I mean, I don’t think anybody — I don’t thinkhe does.”

It only mattered that he did, and after White scored with 57 seconds leftand Danny Amendola converted the tying 2-point conversion, the Patriotscalled heads, won the coin toss and never let Atlanta touch the ball again.

Only with a cleareyed view of these last five months, after the completionof another N.F.L. season, can it now be said: The anxiety, anger andexasperation that pervaded New England for months, after the scandal thatcost the Patriots their sainted quarterback for a spell and dented theirreputation — none of it mattered.

The Patriots reached the final game, just as they thought they would. Andthey won, just as they thought they would all along, even if they never couldhave conjured how they did it.

Brady and the Patriots were down for much of Sunday night, but theyreappeared in the fourth quarter. And now, after Sunday, after winning yetanother Super Bowl, he struck a familiar pose: holding the Lombardi Trophyas confetti fell.

Page 12: Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? If so, did the team you … · 2017-02-10 · The -ment suffix is the result or act of, If it's in containment, it's the result of being packed

This might be the appropriate point to note the travails of the Falconsfranchise. Their woeful inaugural season of 1966, completed weeks before thefirst Super Bowl, presaged Atlanta’s struggles for the next half-century. It tookmore than a decade for the Falcons to reach the playoffs, more than three toadvance to a conference championship and more than four to stackconsecutive winning seasons.

The Falcons traded Brett Favre and had a coach, Bobby Petrino, notify playersthat he was quitting by leaving notes at their lockers. The only other timeAtlanta reached the Super Bowl, in January 1999, one of its best defensiveplayers, Eugene Robinson, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute the nightbefore.

They have lost far more than they won, endured more agony than ecstasyand been lampooned for everything from their attendance to their uniforms, and for all those reasons — and more — a city that had not claimed achampion since the Braves won the World Series in 1995 was ready tocelebrate with abandon once more.

But first, Brady.

He still had to contend with a defense overseen by the Falcons’ coach,Dan Quinn, who nearly foiled him two years ago, when he worked in Seattle. For all of Belichick’s experience, Quinn had coached in more Super Bowlsrecently, three in the last four seasons.

The memory of that loss to New England still smolders for Quinn, whofrom that game remembers not the game-saving goal-line interception byMalcolm Butler, but how the Seahawks went ahead to stay with about twominutes left. Quinn may never again coach a defense as fast and physical —words emblazoned on a bracelet he has worn — as Seattle’s, but for the firstthree quarters on Sunday, the Falcons harassed Brady, swarmed the ball andcreated turnovers, converting both of New England’s mistakes before halftimeinto 14 points.

Page 13: Did you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? If so, did the team you … · 2017-02-10 · The -ment suffix is the result or act of, If it's in containment, it's the result of being packed

Most obvious was the Falcons’ speed advantage, and how, as Quinn’sSeahawks did against Denver in the 2014 game, they parlayed it intomomentum. Robert Alford’s 82-yard interception return for a touchdown, thesecond-longest return in a Super Bowl, had the same effect on the Patriots asMalcolm Smith’s for Seattle three years ago.

And that, to an extent, was part of the plan Quinn toted along with him toAtlanta, whose ascension under him began with an evolved way of thinkingforged by his time in Seattle: He wanted his players to work as hard as theyever have — but have a great time doing it. The Super Bowl was enjoyable, until it wasn’t.

“That’s a hard one in the locker room,” Quinn said. “No place to put that onementally for us.”

One of the Patriots’ underappreciated assets during their dominantstretch has been their resilience, which seems odd given how rarely they tendto lose, or even trail. They fell behind Sunday for the first time since Week 12against the Jets.

But the ethos cultivated by Belichick demands an uncommon fortitude. Those who cannot handle the atmosphere are weeded out like overwhelmedmed students.

Belichick built this reputation by twice smothering prolific offenses inSuper Bowls — the 1990 Bills, when he coordinated the Giants’ unit, and the2001 Rams, in the championship that launched New England’s dynasty.

As potent as that Rams team was, it actually averaged fewer points andfewer yards per play during the season, and committed 33 more turnovers, than these Falcons. Scoring 80 points across two playoff victories emboldenedAtlanta running back Devonta Freeman to call the Falcons’ offense“unstoppable.”

Pre-Reading Preparation Author Biography: S.E. Hinton

Susan Eloise Hinton was born on July 22, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A self-confessed tomboy, Hinton grew up wanting to be a cowboy or a writer. She was an avid reader, but found the young-adult books she read rather unoriginal and unrealistic. At age sixteen, aggravated with the social climate at her high school and frustrated with the quality of available reading materials, Hinton took pen to paper and wrote one of the most-read and loved books for young adults: The Outsiders. This first edition, published in 1967, was an instant success, earning numerous awards. Hinton wrote The Outsiders under the pen

name S.E. Hinton, after publishers expressed concern that a woman’s name on the book would keep boys, the target audience, from reading it. The trick worked, and The Outsiders became an instant young-adult classic, enjoyed by boys and girls alike. After writing The Outsiders, Hinton suffered from writer’s block, which caused her to plummet into a depression. After some soul searching and a big nudge from her boyfriend at the time, Hinton wrote the acclaimed That Was Then, This Is Now which was published in 1971. She married her then-boyfriend, David, in 1970, and they eventually had a son, Nicholas, in 1983. In 1975, S.E. Hinton published Rumble Fish, then Tex in 1979. In 1983, the movie, The Outsiders, was released. Hinton worked closely with the director, Francis Ford Coppola and with up-and-coming stars Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe. Later, Rumble Fish, Tex and That Was Then, This Is Now were also made into movies. In 1988, she wrote Taming the Star Runner and in 1995, deviated from writing for young adults and wrote two children’s books, The Puppy Sister and Big David, Little David. After almost 20 years, Hinton made a literary comeback with the adult novel, Hawkes Harbor, which was published in 2004. Although Hawkes Harbor is a far more mature and complex novel than her earlier works, Hinton continues to captivate and entertain readers, just as she did with her very first novel. © 2010 Secondary Solutions From The Outsiders Literature Guide by Kathleen Rowley for Secondary Solutions

DanceJANUARY 26, 2017Rehearse, Ice Feet, Repeat: The Life of a New York City Ballet CorpsDancerBy

Michael Cooper

With apologies to James Brown, the hardest working people in show business may well be balletdancers. And at New York City Ballet, none work harder than the dancers in its lowest rank, the corpsde ballet. During the first week of the company’s winter season, Claire Kretzschmar, 24, a rising corpsmember, danced in all seven performances, appearing in five ballets, sometimes changing costumes atintermission to dance two roles in a night.

But her work onstage did not even begin to capture the stamina required to be in the corps. Spendinga week shadowing Ms. Kretzschmar was exhausting — she gave new meaning to the idea of being onyour feet all day. Twelve-hour days at the David H. Koch Theater, the company’s Lincoln Centerhome, were hardly unusual: Company class each morning was followed by back-to-back-to-backrehearsals, with occasional breaks for costume fittings or physical therapy, and then by the hair-makeup-costume-dance routine of daily performances.

ballet choreographed by Mr. Martins that she was given a principal role in. She pauses to ask how totime a climactic gesture in which she rests her head on her partner’s palm. “It’s a Hail Mary,” theballet master, Kathleen Tracey, tells her. “Hope for the best!”

2:20 P.M. SLEEPWALKING ONSTAGE The wig needs combing. Few characters in ballet makeas lasting an impression as the Sleepwalker, an enigmatic character with long, flowing hair whomakes her unseeing entrance on point, holding a candle. But when Ms. Kretzschmar first steps outonstage in her new wig, the action briefly stops, as the ballet masters confer with Suzy Alvarez, thecompany’s hair and makeup supervisor, about how they want the wig to look.

It was the wig that first tipped Ms. Kretzschmar off that she was getting the part; even before thecasting was announced she was summoned to a fitting. “I don’t think they would give me a wig if Iwasn’t going to do it,” she said.

The dancers work on one-year contracts. Corps members earn roughly $1,100 to $2,100 a week, depending on seniority, and are typically paid for 37 to 39 weeks a year. Since ballet careers are short, many are in a hurry to make their marks.

Giving corps members a shot at big roles like this is part of the ethos of City Ballet. “You test them,”Mr. Martins said. “What are they made of? Am I wrong, am I right? You throw little bones tothem and see how they react.”

3:10 P.M. COSTUME FITTING: TUTUS AND HOODIES City Ballet’s costume shop — acres oftulle and tutus — is tucked away on the eighth floor of the Rose Building at Lincoln Center. Fittingshere offer a brief respite from the theater and a breath of fresh air. Ms. Kretzschmar tries on the blackhoodie, skirt and high-top sneakers she will wear in Justin Peck’s new ballet, “The Times AreRacing.” Then it was back to the theater for one more rehearsal and then opening night, where shedanced in Balanchine’s “Firebird,” the last ballet on the evening’s triple bill.

Wednesday1:30 P.M. PHYSICAL THERAPY Ballet is a physically punishing, sometimes dangerousbusiness: Injuries are all too common and can lead to missed performances and careers cut short. Ms.Kretzschmar signs up for 15-minute physical therapy sessions in a small space resemblinga doctor’s office on the fifth floor of the theater. She lies on a table and Taryn Khong, the therapist, manipulates her left foot, which Ms. Kretzschmar has injured in the past. “It gets tighter quicker thanthe right one,” she said.

4:18 P.M.: ‘FEARFUL SYMMETRIES’ REHEARSAL Ms. Kretzschmar begins her third stagerehearsal of the day. Mr. Martins, who choreographed the piece, makes a request: At one point, whenshe thrusts her leg behind her, he wants her to bend it to one side, forming a sort of arabesque-with-a-twist. Ms. Tracey, the ballet master leading the rehearsal, demonstrates. “That, exactly,” Mr. Martins

says. Ms. Kretzschmar tries once more to execute the twisting step, which some dancers call “crackyour back” because it looks as if it might.

6:40 P.M. HAIR AND MAKEUP: HEAD, MEET BUN Time to become a swan. “Swan Lake” isone of the most famous ballets of them all, and Balanchine’s unusual one-act take on it has plenty ofdancing for the corps members playing swans. Sitting at a light-bulb-ringed mirror in the hair andmakeup room, Ms. Kretzschmar applies eyeliner and puts her hair in a neat bun. A hairdressercalls across the room to ask all the swans to make sure that some hair can be seen beneath theirmatching black headdresses, which come to a point in the center of their foreheads — lest they start tolook like a member of “The Munsters” family with widow’s peaks.

“Good evening everyone, this is your half-hour call,” a voice says over a loudspeaker.

7 P.M. DRESSING ROOM: LIVING OUT OF A THEATER CASE In the fourth-floor dressingroom she shares with other corps women, Ms. Kretzschmar pins on her headdress. This is her cornerof the theater. It consists of a mirror, a hanging closet shelf crammed with leotards, tights and clothes, and her theater case — one of the old-fashioned black rectangular cases that dancers live out of andtour with. Hers sits open on a luggage rack; as is traditional, the inside lid is decorated with personalmementos.

7:25 P.M. THE WINGS The space off stage right resembles a mini ballet studio: There is a barre, asmall dance floor, and an area for dancers to fix their shoes. Although she is not in the evening’s firstballet, Ms. Kretzschmar arrives before it begins and uses a rasplike tool to scuff the soles of herpoint shoes so they won’t slip.

“I don’t like to feel rushed before the show, because that just makes me more stressed,” she explainslater. “For me, I take that time so I can kind of calm down.”

Next to her, Tiler Peck, one of the company’s biggest stars, prepares her own shoes. The company’smusic director, Andrew Litton, arrives in his tuxedo before heading down to the pit. “HeyTiler, merde,” he says, employing the earthy French expression ballet dancers use to wish each otherluck. “Any last requests?”

Then, although she has been dancing much of the day, she warms up again, seemingly oblivious to theperformance taking place onstage 30 feet away.

8:13 P.M. SHOWTIME Now it’s time to use those muscles: first as a swan in “Swan Lake,”the evening’s second ballet, and, after changing into a modern leotard, in Balanchine’s “The FourTemperaments.”

9:40 P.M. CURTAIN DOWN, HOME LEAVE After the curtain falls, she goes home for a dinnerof leftover pulled pork and macaroni and cheese, and a little television — which she watches with her

feet in an ice bucket.

Friday12:02 P.M. PECK REHEARSALS: HOODIES ON As Donald J. Trump is being inaugurated inWashington and marchers are preparing for a weekend of mass protests, Ms. Kretzschmar is onstagerehearsing the new Justin Peck ballet — which feels timely, with its dancers clad in shirts and hoodiesemblazoned with messages including “Protest,” “Act” and “Unite.” Experimenting, she flips up herhood as she dances. “Try it!” Mr. Peck says encouragingly. “I don’t mind if it comes off.”

Saturday6:30 P.M. SLEEPWALKING BETWEEN SHOWS Although she has just danced in amatinee and has another performance that evening, Ms. Kretzschmar requests another “Sonnambula”rehearsal sandwiched between shows. Glenn Keenan, the ballet master, walks her through it againand again.

Ms. Keenan asks the pianist, Elaine Chelton, to pick up at the moment the Sleepwalker touches thebody of the Poet. “Do you have where she bumps into the body?” she asks. Ms. Chelton scans herpiano score, which is annotated with all manner of steps and stage actions. “I have where she stepsover,” she replies, and begins playing a little before that.

Sunday5:15 P.M. ONE WEEK DOWN, TWO DEBUTS TO COME After dancing two more roles at thematinee — as a male-eating insect in Jerome Robbins’s “The Cage,” and in the corps of Mr. Peck’s“Scherzo Fantastique” — her week comes to an end. She pauses to reflect on the week ahead: OnMonday, the company’s day off, she will start a class at Fordham, where she is close to earning adegree in communications, with a minor in English. Then back to dancing, and the debuts of her twobig roles, which she said she would keep honing between all her other roles.

“I want to feel really prepared,” she said, adding that she would take care not to overdo it. “I try totake a day-by-day, hour-by-hour approach.”
