BIODIVERSITY

Even when we look at one particular animal we find great biodiversity

But why do we need to classify?

Classification is the process of arranging things into groups based on their similarities

We classify things constantly around us…

We classify because it helps:- To find things- To organize and understand things better- To predict

Mystery books

Classification is important!

Where is my blue t-shirt?

What do we do when we classify?

1. Observe2. Note properties and characteristics3. Sort things out

Does it has a nucleus?

No Prokaryote

Yes Does it contain a vacuole?

Dichotomous key

A dichotomous key is a method for determining the identity of something.

It is like a road map made of questions with a yes/no answer.

Depending on the answer we willfollow one path or another

CLASSIFYING ALIENS!

Dichotomous keys can be more complex

ACTIVITY “Make your own dichotomous key”

1. Organize in groups.2. You will get a bag with 6 plastic organisms.3. Fill the information on page 4 (sketch, name and characteristics).4. Prepare a flowchart to classify them.5. Write down the corresponding dichotomous key.

Evaluation:

1. Hand in a sheet of paper with the flowchart and the dichotomous key

2. Present the key to the rest of the class and explain it. Important things to mention:

a) Why do you think we need to classify organisms?b) Why do you think a dichotomous key is useful?c) Conclusions
