Dear Families and Friends, The holidays are rapidly approaching and December is upon us. Time has certainly flown this year! The holiday season often inspires us to reflect upon our many blessings and show appreciation for those we hold dear. It is in that spirit that we would like to take a few moments to express our love and gratitude for members of our Chelsea family. Thank you to Mrs. Szkolny, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Zito, and the entire Encore team for coordinating a wonderful Veterans Day celebration. Thanks especially to all of the families who sent in photos and information regarding the veterans in their lives, and to the veterans themselves who attended our program on November 11th. It was a truly wonderful way to honor the significant impact that these members of our Chelsea family have had on the lives of Americans everywhere. Many thanks to all those who donated to Stack the Stock, and helped fill the shelves at the Frankfort Food Pantry. Your generosity will truly make a difference in the lives of many local families. In addition, it was a pleasure to see that many parents participated in our Parents in P.E. event during the Stack the Stock food drive. Thank you for being involved in your child’s education, and helping us to set a Guinness World Record! Last, but not least, thank you to all of the parents who love and support our Chelsea students on a daily basis. We are honored to be your partners in education. As our partner, we would like to hear your thoughts about Chelsea School. Please take a moment and complete the Illinois 5 Essentials survey at https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/. This survey provides us with valuable information that we will use to chart the course for Chelsea’s future endeavors. Your voice is important – please let it be heard by completing the 5 Essentials! We wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season. We are looking forward to a December full of love, laughter, and learning! Sincerely, Dr. Sharon Nepote, Principal and Ms. Rachel Newcomb, Assistant Principal The weather is getting colder each week. Please dress your children appropriately and remember that they will be participating in outdoor activities unless the weather is extremely cold. Students who will be out of school for an extended absence often request homework in advance. We appreciate your efforts to keep your child up to date with their school work. Please remember that some activities cannot be provided in advance as they may be group work or new skills that require direct instruction. Therefore, teachers will provide only those assignments that can be completed independently during your child’s absence. When visiting the school, please remember to have a picture ID available. All visitors will be asked to check in at the main office. If a fire drill or alarm should take place while you are visiting, please exit the building, meet in the bus lane and report to an administrator or a member of the office staff. We need to know that everyone is safe. If you are changing your child’s mode of transportation for the day, please send a note in the morning. The teacher will be aware of the change and forward the communication to the office. If you have forgotten to send written notification, please call the office before noon unless it is an emergency. Please mark your calendar with the hot lunch/es that you have purchased. We have several different organizations that sponsor hot lunch. Also, there are Tuesdays with no hot lunch, so be sure that your child brings a lunch on those days. Chelsea Intermediate School News — December 2016 Together is a Great Place to Be!!

Technology Time Emergency School Closings

In the event of an emergency school closing the following procedure will take place: District 157C will initiate the “School Messenger” phone system to all parents/guardians. This system will simultaneously transmit a recorded message informing you of a school closing. Please be mindful that there is a 5-second delay when answering the phone before receiving the recorded message—PLEASE DO NOT HANG UP. Parents will also receive an email notifying them of the school closings. This information can also be located on the District website, as well as the television and radio stations listed below. In the event that any parent is uncertain about the emergency closing, they may call the school their child attends to receive a recorded message indicating that schools are closed. If you wish to change the phone number or email address that the system uses, please call your school office. Chelsea’s number is 1-815-469-2309. In our continuing commitment to support the safety of our community, our school is pleased to participate in the SmileSafe Kids™ program, a child safety program developed in partnership by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Lifetouch National School Studios. This program will provide the families of every student photographed on school Picture Day with a pair of Safety ID Cards free of charge. Your child must be present on Picture Day to receive the complimentary safety cards. At our school, the health and well-being of your child are top priorities. We’re proud to be a partner in the SmileSafe Kids™ program, one of the nation’s largest child safety initiatives. Lifetouch will be sending them out for all students in Pre-K through 5th grade. The SmileSafe Kids™ program is designed to help your family stay safer and prepare you to respond quickly if your child is missing.

The students continue to build their skills in STEM. The students’ enthusiasm and confidence are growing. Second quarter expectations will be to stay focused, make great observations and be safe at all times. The third graders completed a Google search for magnets and explored magnets hands-on to learn how magnets interact with items around the room and with other magnets. Students learned to open up a Word Document to

record some of the facts about magnets. They also learned to save their document on their own personal drive. Later, the students will engineer Maglev vehicles and test them. Fourth graders did a Google search on Wind Energy. They participated in demonstrations involving wind speed and pitch angles of fan blades. Students recorded their data and analysis on a Word document. No more paper and pencils are needed this quarter in STEM. Students will engineer their Eco Wind Generators, then test them. Fifth graders started engineering their Sky Eagle model plane. After evaluating their first quarter engineering, fifth graders realized that some students need to carefully read directions with their partners more often and make several attempts in problem solving. The fifth grade overall feels that they have been very successful in engineering.

5th grade In December, 5th grade students will be adding color to their cultural mask designs.

While painting these designs with watercolor and Tempera, students will learn about

moving paint freely and creating textures with brush strokes.

4th grade Chelsea 4th grade classes have been busy mixing colors for their color wheels. Our

next project in December will be a paper quilt.

3rd grade In 3rd grade, students will be making a radial design that is much like a paper tie-dye. You will want to stock up on

paper towels. They will probably want to try this at home.

Please check with your students about supplies. Pencils, glue sticks and coloring supplies may need to be replenished

before coming back in January.

3rd grade students will continue to study dynamics. They will apply their knowledge of forte and piano to mallet instruments. Students will play multiple winter songs and accompany them with a variety of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. 4th grade students will continue reading treble clef notes and half note, quarter note, eighth note rhythms in preparation for recorders. Students will also study the parts of the recorder. Students will compose a melody using the

pitches B, A, and G. This will be the first song that they play on the recorder. 5th grade students will perform their rhythm compositions in small groups. We will review treble clef notation and will add a melody to this composition. Students will perform the melody using boomwhackers. Students will also be introduced to the bass clef. Through games and playing activities, students will continue reading and performing rhythms using half note, quarter note, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and quarter and half rests.

November was a fun month. Students finished up their soccer

and football units and had some fun kickball tournaments as well

as a few great games of “Capture the Flag”.

The Guinness World Record Stack-up Day on

November 17th was a success with 1,084

stackers at Chelsea. Last year the record was

set at 518,394 stackers around the world. We

are waiting to hear the news of (hopefully)

setting a new world record this year. This is the 11th year for this new record

setting event which Chelsea has been a part of for each year the event has been

held. Every year the number of stackers has increased, thus continuing to break the record each year!

Along with our Guinness Stack up Day, we held our annual

“Stack the Stock.” We asked our Chelsea students to bring

in canned goods to replenish the stock at the Frankfort Food

Pantry. We are so proud of our students who brought in

items before the Thanksgiving Break. We want to thank

everyone who brought in canned goods, and the Frankfort

Food Pantry wanted to express their gratitude for our

generous donation.

Looking forward to next month, students will enjoy a bowling unit before winter

break. Watch for our December Parents in P.E. when guests can join their student

for some fun Cosmic Bowling during their P.E. class.

We will continue to collect Box Tops for Education, so please keep sending them

in to school!

This year the FSP will be running the Holiday Shop ONE EVENING only, December

8th at 5:30 P.M. This will be an entire district event. Shopping will be available at Grand

Prairie, but all district students are welcome to come. Holiday Shop provides students’

an opportunity to shop on their own for their family. We have low cost items that range

from 25 cents to 15 dollars. In addition to the Holiday Shop, we will have additional fun

activities. A photo booth and crafts are in the plan. Watch for more details to come out

soon!

Our current Dine and Donate is with Chili's. Please visit Chili’s between November 16th - December 16th to

grab a bite to eat. The number they need to know is 99999000007115. There are 5 local Chili's that you can

go to: New Lenox, Orland Park, Shorewood, Chicago Ridge, and Homer Glen.

In December, our fourth grade students will continue ELA with our “Animal Unit.” Throughout this unit, students will focus on inferencing skills and being able to understand the differences between poetry, prose, and drama. In correlation with our animal unit, we will continue with writing an informational essay based on the animals that students selected. In Math, we will move into both basic and long division. As always, it is important for the students to continue to practice their multiplication facts. In Social Studies, we will move into the Southeast region. Students will be responsible for knowing the location of the states, their capitals, and the two-letter abbreviation. Finally in Science, we will begin to analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features. Thank you for your continued support, we hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season!

News from Mrs. Cumbee’s Class

The fifth grade students in Mr. Becker’s Advanced ELA, and homeroom, have been working diligently with our new units of study for the second quarter. In Advanced ELA, we began our Courage Unit. By the end of the quarter, students will be able to answer the following essential questions: What is courage? What role does courage play in exploration? Does exploration enhance a civilization/society? Why do people explore? Students will be able to answer these questions through their informational writing assignment .

Students will also read the novel “Peak”, which will provide a modern day example of exploration. Our fifth graders also had the opportunity to visit Joliet Junior College’s Planetarium. This field trip provided our students a preview to our next science unit of space. Currently in math, students are beginning their study of fractions. We look forward to fun filled learning experience for the second quarter!

News from Mr. Becker’s Class

Mrs. Santoro’s class is off to a great second quarter. We attended a field trip at Joliet Junior College. Students went on an animated trip in the planetarium to learn about astronomy and the solar system. They also had the chance to travel back in time and find out what it was like to be a student in a one room schoolhouse between 1863 and 1950. Along with the other 5th grade classes, we are currently reading a novel called “Peak.” The students are learning about Mount Everest and how much courage would be needed to stand 29,000 feet above sea level. Dedication, perseverance, and risk taking are all factors in accomplishing such a large goal. It is a great lesson to learn in their own lives, as these are all important qualities to pursue as great citizens in this world. Finally, we are going to incorporate more technology into the classroom! Students will have more opportunities to work with a computer on Google programs and other online tools to supplement what we are learning in class as 21st century learners!
