Headlines The German Exchange has gone extremely well and there will be a full write up coming soon for you to read. I would like to congratulate the students on their enthusiasm for German and how they approached the exchange. I would also like to thank Ms Kincaid for organising the trip so well. On Wednesday, PhD students from UCL spent the morning giving lectures on new technologies including their Hydrogen Powered Car – which they drove up from London. The theme for BSW is Improving the Environment, and other activities include making Eco Bricks, Eco assemblies delivered by year 13 students and our new Wind Turbine being delivered. I would like to thank the Science faculty and Mr Lee and Ms Cavanagh for organising the activities. Huge congratulations to Natalie E in 7E who has

been successful in obtaining one of only 15 places nationwide for the Pony Racing Authorities Youth Training Scheme.

The scheme will provide her with the loan of a

racing pony and if all goes well, she will have her first event at a racecourse as a budding jockey in three months’ time. This is an exciting step for Natalie in her ambition of being a professional jockey, something which she has and continues to work so hard towards achieving. Well done to Natalie on this amazing achievement and we wish her every success in the scheme.

We love to hear about student successes outside of

school. If you would like your son/daughter to be included in the Sandprint, please contact [email protected].

Writing Competition for Asimov Anniversary

To mark the 100th anniversary of Isaac Asimov’s birthday, we ran a writing competition based on the interests of the author himself. Isaac Asimov was a prolific writer who wrote on many themes although he is best known for his science fiction writing and the 3 Laws of Robotics. His novels have been turned into successful films including ‘I Robot’ and ‘Bicentennial man’. Pupils could enter into 4 different categories based on some of Isaac Asimov’s interests. Predictions for the future, Improving the 3 laws of robotics, A short science fiction story and The history of science fiction.

Every one who entered wrote a short story. Key stage 4 winner was Christy Shaw with a short story written in the near future where the world wide TESLA data base knows everything about everybody, but keeps some organic operatives in case the data base itself is hacked. Key stage 5 winner and overall winner was Jess Beadle-Platt with a story about the possible choices that could be made with any advances in designer babies. Here is an extract:

"Anyway much better to know, you know. Who wants the hassle of rolling the dice, so much easier to pay the way, as it were." Elizabeth flicked her bottle blonde hair, cascading it in a movement as fake and well practised as the rest of her.

“Right” With a flat tone and sharp eyes the doctor coughed deliberately one more. “Eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, and any specific features you want?” finger tapping deliberately after each category, she raised an eyebrow.

“Well that's easy, blue- the absolute bluest eyes you've ever seen, blonde hair in these little ringlets, anything under 110 pounds and 5’6” there was a note of ‘of course’ in her voice as she noted the features, as if any other answer was preposterous. “She will be beautiful, big eyes, small nose, dainty in every sense of the word.” Her eyes shone with sick satisfaction, voice as nauseating as the words she spewed. This sort of control ill suited her, her eyes glassy as she positively salivated over the image she created for herself.

Both stories will be available on line.

Detector Design Competition Last year we were lucky enough to be included in

competition run by Smiths Detection, a company who design and manufacture products that are used to detect chemicals, explosives, what in carry-on baggage, and cargo screening. The local production facility in Hemel Hempstead produce 2 main products; one to detect explosives and narcotics at airports and a smaller portable chemical detectors used by the military.

The pupils had to design a detector to detect anything of their choice in a location of their choice, but had to be discrete and to test people without them realising.

The pupils had to build a non-working prototype, produce a diagram or poster to explain how it would be used and what it would look like and to prepare a 5 minute presentation. It had to meet certain restrictions on size.

Sandringham had two teams competing for a place in the finals at Smiths Detection later this month or next month. 1 teams design was chosen as the winner, but both teams impressed the engineers from Smiths Detection and were asked to team up to prepare for the final, so congratulation to Tristan, Harry, Mustakim and Johnny who will all be going forward to the finals.

Rampaging Chariots

One of Sandringham’s ex pupils is an engineer working at Leonardo, an international aerospace company with a site in Luton specialising in electronics. Sarah has done a lot of work with us in the STEM areas and is our technical advisor for Rampaging Chariots, a national competition run by Leonardo along the lines of Robot Wars.

A diverse collection of tales will be published, so stories revolving around friendship, families, animals or even science fiction are all welcome, providing they slot into the themes above. An esteemed panel of judges will crown national prize-winners in two categories: under 10s and ages 11-15. In addition, there will be twelve regional runners-up. Prizes include a 2-night stay in a Premier Inn family room family room and will have their story published; 24 x Regional Finalists will have their stories published Entries close on 31st March. To submit a 500-word short story, young authors can submit their entries with their name, age, location and contact information for parent/guardian to [email protected] .

House Spelling

On Monday 9th March, students from all eight Houses competed in the annual House Spelling competition. There were 6 rounds in total: commonly misspelled words, subject specific vocabulary, new vocabulary, high level vocabulary and the “on the pot” round. In addition this year there was a bonus round where students had to choose the correct homonym for the sentence. As always, teams were given a joker card to play which doubled their score for their chosen round.

Some of the challenges on offer were words such

as bombastic, amalgamation, disassociation and expediency. The new vocabulary round reflected the ever-changing nature of the English language and included words such as texpectation (the anticipation of waiting for a response to a text message), carcolepsy (a condition where the passenger falls asleep as soon as the car starts moving) and nomophobia ( the fear of being without a mobile phone reception).

The wining team was Fawcett with 141 points followed by Johnson and then Hepworth. Well done to all who participated and many thanks to the English staff who came along to do a little bit more marking!

News

This week has been another busy week for Sport at Sandringham and more success is a result of lots of hard work from teams and individuals across the school. As sport starts to become interrupted the future of competitions remains uncertain, however this week has certainly been business as usual.

Monday saw two home basketball games played

with the Y9s being involved in the County plate final V Onslow. In a close match a young team were undone by the visitors and ended up losing to a strong side. Runners up in the County plate competition is a good result for a mixed season. The Y10s were also playing in the County Cup semi final V Queens. The team put in a sub standard performance for what has been a good season. In a game that they know they should have won the intensity just wasn’t there and they ended up losing by 8.

Both performance squad teams were in action on

Monday against St. Helens away. Both teams played superbly with two wins 24-13 and 21-13. This is a great result against a strong school and again shows the development of the team this season. Well done girls.

The Y8 boys rugby team played Chancellors at

home on Monday in a friendly. With further progress and a number of players showing real promise the team went down to the travelling side, however the future looks bright and with a real commitment to the sport next year the team can have much success moving forward.

Tuesday saw our Y8 boys football team host

Marlborough in the District Cup. A great start to the game on a very windy astro saw us take a 4-0 lead into half time with some superb football. The second half was a formality as we progressed into the quarter final with a 5-1 win. Well done and good luck in the next round.

On Wednesday the Y11 boys basketball team

hosted Queens in the County Cup semi-final. It was a good performance from the team with all 12contributing to the game. Ryan H and Max E led the team in scoring and comfortably took control of the match to see us ease into Monday’s final V St. Columba’s. Hopefully the result will be the same in the showpiece event at 18:00 on Monday.

The Y8 boys basketball team also played their

County Cup semi-final at home on Wednesday with the opposition being St. Columba’s. In a very tight game Vicente L and Finn H outperformed their opposite numbers to book their spot in next week’s final V Beaumont on Wednesday at 16:00. Hopefully their run continues and they can overturn the revers fixture from earlier in the year.

PE News cont. Wednesday saw a win for the Y7 Netball Team vs

Marlborough, beating the opposition by a convincing 12– win. MVP Chloe G.

The 1st XI were also in action on Wednesday V

Owens School at home in the County league. With a recent run of form and some good performances the team continued this in the first half with a 3-0 lead taken into the break. With a big squad and much rotation in the second half the lead was held, albeit with 2 goals conceded to see us win 3-2. Next week sees us host Marlborough for a place in the District Semi.

The senior basketball team played their County

Cup semi-final V Queens on Thursday away against a team that has placed in the top 4 Nationally this season. The fisrt 5 minutes saw us ru them close, however Queens really showed their dominance and class in the second quarter and pulled away to take the win. It was a valuable experience especially for a very young side. Particular mention should go to Carlos R-M and Peter A who played their final game for the schoolin what has been an excellent school basketball career for them both and I thank them for their hard work and dedication.

The Y8 Netball team travelled to Marlborough for

their final District Netball game in what has been an unbeaten season. This record in still in tact after a comprehensive 14-3 win, with Katie A impressing throughout. Well done girls.
