Mrs Leicester will be at the helm in my absence. Mrs Fenn returns from maternity leave this week and will replace Mrs Stewart. Mrs Wakeling and Mrs Kelly attend an in service this Thursday morning on the 3L’s Program currently in action in early stage 1 rooms. Morning Arrival: Again I write to parents to stress the high importance of students arriving at school for the morning assembly. Students prosper most when they arrive at school punctually and regularly. They receive an excellent scaffold for maximum learning when they arrive for morning assemblies and prompt entry to hear class teacher daily instructions and explanations. That and regular attendance sets them in good stead for a successful learning lifestyle. I appreciate parents who value this and regularly ensure their children are at school PRIOR to the morning assembly. If your child is late for an acceptable reason (sickness/medical appointment etc) they are to be signed in by an adult. Please note that “late” or “slept in” are not acceptable reasons and are entered on rolls as “unexplained absences”. This is required by law. One Day Chess Tournament: Sebastian, Matthew, Nicholas, Lachlan, Lochlan, Emilia, Daniel, Caitlin, Anthony and Tim will represent HTPS at this Wednesday’s competition. I thank Mrs Burgess, Mrs McCann, Mrs Winnel, Mrs Stephens and Mrs Tortorella for their assistance in conveying our students and Mrs McCann and Mrs Tortorella for assisting with supervision. I trust our students will have a great day. NAIDOC Week: This week we have our NAIDOC celebrations. K-2 on Wednesday and years 3-6 on Thursday will rotate through a series of hands on activities including dance, weaving, art and boomerang throwing, run by the National Parks and Wildlife Aboriginal Discovery Rangers: Deidre Martin, Mark Mongta, Jacob Chant- Morris, Raymond Timbery and CJ Thomas Scott. The activities run between 10am and 2.30pm. Friday is mufti day where the students are invited to bring a gold coin donation and dress in red, yellow and black (the colours on the Aboriginal flag). Aboriginal movies from the Aboriginal movie festival will be shown in the hall at lunch time. Peer Support: There will be a picnic lunch this Friday 13 August in the peer support groups and an afternoon of activities including a disco, games and Aboriginal pavement art. Stage 3 BHS Visit: All stage 3 students are invited to attend a “BHS Taster Day” on Tuesday 24 August. Students will attend Bowral HS for half a day and be involved in taster sessions in the Science, Industrial Arts, Music, Home Economics, Visual Arts, PE and Maths faculties. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to preview high school life and meet students from other feeder schools prior to this next important phase in their lives. A separate note is attached. Book Week Performance : This year the theme for Book Week is “Across the Story Bridge”. As part of our celebrations we are having a special performance on Monday 16 August at 2pm called “Crossing Bridges”, which is a collection of stories about journeys and journeys across bridges which are performed by an actor with some puppets. The cost for this performance is covered by Visiting Artists or $6.00 if paying separately, which needs to be in to the money mouth by 11am Friday 13 August. Premier’s Spelling Bee: All stage 2 and stage 3 students are currently trying out for a place in this competition. On Thursday 19 August we will have the final contestants appear on stage in the hall for the elimination session where we will select Hill Top PS’s two ambassadors who will represent us in the Highland’s Knockout. Parents of students appearing on stage will receive a letter/phone call inviting them to our knockout. Uni Maths Test: Our final test takes place next Tuesday 17 August when a number of our students sit the maths test. Congratulations to Zac Bishop who attained a Credit in the recent Science test. Well done Zac! OzGreen Planet Earth: A number of parents and students have come up with a host of excellent suggestions as a result of the OzGreen workshops. These range from solar panels, school vegie gardens, reductions in electricity consumption to better composting arrangements. I invite those parents and students to our staff meeting next Wednesday afternoon, 18 August at 3 pm where these ideas will be followed up. District Athletics Carnival: Last Friday Mrs. Doust and Mrs. Griffiths took 50 students to Eridge Park, Bowral for the district athletics carnival. The children were great ambassadors for the school. Congratulations on your very fine efforts. Several students will be going on to the area carnival in Canberra and names will be published when we receive conformation from Moss Vale PS. Bowral HS Science Fair: Students entering items in the upcoming Fair are reminded to continue their work—we are awaiting the ‘backboards’ from the High School. G & T Day: Alex, Zoe and Alicia are off to Bowral PS next Tuesday 17 August for a day of Creative Writing. We wish them well. Year 6 Farewell Dinner:

Staffing News: My second eye surgery takes place this Thursday/Friday.

Recount from Creative Writing Day held at Bowral PS recently I liked the part in the creative writing day where Richard read us a story that he wrote. The story that he read to us was Croaky Cockroaches. We drew a picture about a story he just made up out of his head. In the story he was Ben the Lion. After we drew the picture we had to write about what was happening in it. The last thing we did was make up our own story about something that has gone wrong at our house. I wrote a problem with Jack and Boffie my dogs.

Active Afternoon School Care

During our first week in Active Afternoon-school Care we experimented with Team Walking Boards. We had a lot of fun learning to cooperate and help each other walk our boards to the finished point. Have a look at our pictures we are all laughing alot and having fun. We also a learning the finer points of Croquet. The mallet has to be hit in a certain way for the ball to go through the hoop. The afternoon was full of fun for everyone.

Yours in Sport, Amanda, Jo-Ann, Marilyn and Wendy.

Year 6 Fair Meeting

Our next year 6 Fair meeting is on Monday 23 August at 4.30pm

Parent helpers needed! In Week 8 of this term we will be having a Multicultural Open Day to invite

Parents and Grandparents into the school to show off our class efforts in

learning about different countries.

Kindergarten are learning about Australia.

1 /2 Possums are learning about India.

1 /2 Wallabies are learning about Thailand.

2 Dolphins are learning about Japan.

3 /4 Waratahs are learning about China.

4 / 5 Goannas are learning about the Philippines.

5 /6 Tree Frogs are learning about Indonesia.

3/4/5/6 Wattle are learning about Vietnam.

To help raise money for our school (as an added fundraiser for the Year Six

Fair) we intend this year to try a new venture by having a Multicultural Food

Fair in the hall where food representative from these countries can be pur-

chased.

We need parents to help us with this venture by helping to decide on easy reci-

pes for the day .We need to avoid food allergies, costly items, food that is too

spicy and also need to consider simple heating arrangements for such food. We

also need parent helpers to help prepare, serve and sell the food on the day in

our school hall.

Please contact your class teacher or Mrs Leicester if you are available to help

us with this venture.
