Principal’s Comments

Dear Parents,

We find that children learn to read rapidly from prep-

2. For most children, by the end of grade 2 they are

able to read many books at their level with quite

good understanding. For many children, (not only at

our school), grade 3 standards require a big jump in

the number of words children need to know, and in

the complexity of the ideas they need to understand.

International research calls this the “grade 3 slump”

in reading. In order to alleviate this problem, children

need to actively learn as many words as possible

early on, and engage in activities that develop their

understandings of the world. The best way to learn

new words is in the context of new experiences. For

example, at the supermarket, children can be engaged

in talk about the products. Asking children to say

new words is very powerful, as the physical action of

pronouncing a word correctly helps embed it in

memory. Children need to be encouraged to ask what

words mean if they are watching TV. It’s very handy

to have a T.V. that can be paused so the unknown

word can be explained and the program not be

missed! Once children get in the habit of being “word

detectives”, they will tune in to language and their

language learning will be ongoing throughout their

lives. In grade 3 and later, some children use so much

short term memory space working out unknown

words, that the meaning of the text is lost. Even in

this digital age, reading is central to effective

functioning in a modern society.

Here are some ideas for encouraging your child to

talk:

When your child talks, give them your full

attention (this can be difficult!) Take the time

to fully answer their questions

Use adult words in your conversations, and

explain what they mean

Ask your child, “What does that remind you

of?” Encourage them to look for similarities

and differences

Ask your child to give you directions. For

example, “Explain how to get to nanna’s

house”

Play games that require talking, such as most

board games

Limit their time on electronic games that

require mostly hand-eye coordination and

little interaction

Ask your child what might happen next if

they are watching TV. Ask them who their

favourite character is in a show and why

Tell your child about things that have

happened in your day

Encourage your children to create a play for

you to watch

Tell each other jokes

Don’t let children take electronic games in the

car. Some of the best conversations I had with

my sons happened while we were driving to

and from places!

Human intelligence is primarily developed through

speaking and listening. The quality of our lives

depends on the quality of our thinking and on our

ability to communicate and discuss what we think

with others. Talk is intrinsic to literacy and to our

ability to form relationships with others. It is the

foundation of both verbal and emotional intelligence.

(Fisher, 2007)

Kind regards,

Jenny Duggan

This year FGPS is participating in Woolworths Earn & Learn! Every time you

shop at Woolworths, collect the stickers and put them on the sticker sheet,

which you can place in either the box outside the Fountain Gate store OR

send them to school and place in the allocated box in the office.

The stickers help us earn dollars to spend on Valuable Educational Items.

Remember to place one sticker per square from the sheets that you can

get from the school Canteen.

Woolworths ONLY count the sheets not the individual stickers.

Please encourage friends and family to shop at Woolworths so they can

collect stickers for our school! Last time we were able to purchase over

$2,000 worth of Numeracy material!

Happy Collecting!
