develop into one of the best Clubs inthe County. He explained that Systonhad traditionally been admired for thewarmth of the hospitality offered tovisitors.Over recent years a great deal ofmoney had been invested in bringingthe quality of the green up tostandard. The opening of theclubhouse extension and the disabledramp had successfully addressed twofurther problems of comfort and accesswhich had previously diminished thevisitor experience.Only one serious hurdle now remained– the lack of visitor parking within theconfines of the Park close to theclubhouse. He pointed out that thislack of facility, unique among Clubs inthe County, causes difficulties inpersuading teams to visit Syston.“

,” he said. “

.”He went on to express the hope that inthe immediate future, based on acommon desire to make Syston anattractive place to visit and shop, andto develop high-quality recreationalfacilities, the Club and the TownCouncil could continue to work closelytogether to find a mutually acceptablesolution to this problem whichseriously inhibits Club growth anddevelopment and does nothing toenhance the reputation of Syston as atown.

He went on to stress the Club’scommitment, as a registeredCommunity Amateur Sports Club(CASC), to an “open door policy” and tothe "Three F's" - itness, riendship andun - that the sport of bowling offers to

both sexes of all ages. He stressed“

..”

In conclusion, he issued a warminvitation to all members of thecommunities of Syston andneighbouring villages, irrespective ofage, to come forward and join with theClub in the great game of bowls, guaranteeing everyone who respondedthe warmest of welcomes.Following brief supportive addressesfrom the Mayor Paul Day and PresidentDeepak Tanna, Club Life Member,Marjorie Clowes, made a short andemotional speech recalling those who

SO CLOSE, YET . . WELL DONEOn Sunday 7th September three rinks fromSyston were invited to play in the MarketOverton Gala Day. On a beautiful summer day 24rinks played 4 games each during the day with alunch and a tea provided by the home club. I’mpleased to say one of our rinks managed a jointrunner-up place, that rink was T. Jordan, K.Renshaw, R. Heggs and P. MurrayA prize of £40.00 was presented to the rinkwhich the lads gave to the President’s Charity, many thanks for that lads. Our congratulations must go out to MarketOverton for the work they, as a club put in to theday, they deserve everything they got out of the

had been closely involved in the buildingof the original clubhouse in 1984 andexpressing the deep sense of honour shefelt at being invited to launch this nextstage in Club development. After the cutting of the traditional redribbon, visitors were invited to inspectthe new facilities before moving on tothe green to watch the first of the gamesin the Club’s Competitions FinalsWeekend.

The content of Gerry Kinnell’s letter tothe Editor in last month’s

regarding kitchen staffing forMen’s Teas was discussed at length atthe September Management Groupmeeting and overall, it was felt thatthe efforts of the Catering Manager andthe Management Group had beenbelittled. It was unanimously agreed that Gerryhad worked extremely hard andsuccessfully during his time asCatering Manager but over the years, times change, as do people’s attitudes. The current policy of members workingto a rota created by the CateringManager carries the full support of theManagement Group and was stronglyinfluenced by the reluctance ofmembers to volunteer for kitchenduties.Apart from the odd “blip”, the latestpolicy ensures that a satisfactory levelof staffing is available in advance andavoids any last minute panics. The “sanctions” against any memberfailing to arrange for a replacement inhis absence would be subject to reviewat the time but in extreme cases mightultimately result in being omitted fromteam selection in a future match.

END OF YEARREPORT -WHITE PLUMSFirst of all I wish tothank all 12 players whoparticipated this year,

We started the seasonquite well, winning 4 andlosing 2, but we didn’tmanage to keep ittogether.

At the end we had played14 games: won 7 and lost7, shots for 728 andshots against 651,finishing in fourth placeout of eight.

Last year we finished inthird place, so I wasdisappointed.

It was also disappointingfor me that we lost theservices of Des Eggitt dueto his ill health.

Towards the end of theseason I was pleased tosee him start to makeprogress, back to his oldform.

Next season I would liketo think we will all makea bigger effort and pressfor promotion.

Presentation evening was held recentlyand once again the Bowls Club basketsand containers were awarded a HighlyRecommended Certificate. We have been trying to find new venuesto visit to add some variety but this isproving to be difficult as most of thegardens within easy reach have beenvisited quite a few times. Also providingenough vehicles and drivers has been aproblem this year. However, we havearranged to go to Bosworth Field whichis surrounded by beautiful countryside, with easily managed walks and anexcellent information centre for anyonewishing to find out more about thehistory of the period and the battle itself. There is also a shop and a beautiful oldbarn that has been renovated whichprovides meals. We can also visitWoodlands Nursery which is nearby. The visit takes place on Thursday, 23rdOctober, meet at the Club at 9.45am.Full details on the notice board. The Christmas meal will be at the TobyInn in Loughborough on Thursday, 18thDecember. Indoor bowls on Monday afternoonswill have started for some of ourmembers.Remember you don’t use body-weightin your delivery. Being a fast surfacemeans that your bowl only needs aslower delivery for it to run down theline to the shoulder, for the long runtowards the jack or to a set position. Also your bowl will need a widerdraw than it needed when playingoutdoor bowls, also the concentrationis more intense, you won’t get awaywith mistakes like outdoor bowling, ifyou miss your line indoors it runs alot wider from the jack. You don’t need a lot of back swing, ifyou do it must be very slow whendelivering the bowl or you will find itdifficult when playing a running bowl, you still have to have a yard of green.Remember also if you have the lastbowl and your rink is one shot downwith the shot bowl touching the jackand you have a good second bowlwith your opponent having three ormore shots in the head, you have theoption of playing different shots, oneis to draw to push your second bowlin for shot, remembering that theweight must be perfect to push yourbowl a few inches for shot. The otheroption is to play your bowl and let theopposition have the shot.

As catering manager, I would like tothank all those members who helped inthe kitchen this season for themidweek and Saturday matches, especially the ladies. Without theladies help we would have struggled toprovide a meal at some of the games. The system we have adopted, wherebywe draw out names for the tea rotaand anyone who cannot make thatparticular date can swap with someone

else seems to be working well withonly a couple of complaints during thewhole season.Overall I think the catering has beenvery successful this season and onceagain a big thank you to all concerned.
