Encrypting means scrambling the contents of the file in a way so as it cannot be fixed without a password. Usually it is not possible to get the files back without paying the ransom to overseas criminals who may or may not help you. However, it is possible to retrieve the files from a backup that you took before the virus hit. Sometimes the computer will keep “Previous Versions” of your files, and sometimes it is possible to retrieve them from these previous versions, however the virus sometimes deletes these too. These viruses seem to most commonly be coming through emails claiming to be from either AGL Energy or Australia Post, but they could come from any email or website, amongst other sources. I recently had a case where the virus got onto the home computer, then when through a wireless network (about 1.3km’s through the air) to their dairy and encrypted everything on the dairy computer as well. Thankfully everything important was backed-up, so nothing much was lost, but it would have been a very serious problem for their business if backups weren’t taken. There is only really 3 things you can do to protect yourself: 1) Keep your computer operating system (Windows or Mac) and anti-virus program up to date. 2) Be very careful what you do on the internet. An anti-virus program can only do so much, and it will often miss many new threats. 3) BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP… It is very important that you backup any files that you do not want to lose. You must have at least 2 copies of any file you care about (but the more the better), each copy stored on a different disk. The backup copy/s must be disconnected from your computer except for when you are running a backup, and should preferably be stored in another building in case of a fire. These viruses often delete or encrypt your backups too, even on another computer. If you do cop one of these, turn your computer off immediately, leave it turned off, unplug any external storage such as USB drives, and do not use the computer until it has been fixed up. Beware - Computer Virus

Lately several people in our community have been hit with a very nasty computer virus called “cryptolocker”. Cryptolocker encrypts everything it can find on your computer (and often other computers in your house or business), and demands a ransom payment in return for the password required to get your files back. Encrypting means scrambling the contents of the file in a way so as it cannot be fixed without a password. Usually it is not possible to get the files back without paying the ransom to overseas criminals who may or may not help you. However, it is possible to retrieve the files from a backup that you took before the virus hit. Sometimes the computer will keep “Previous Versions” of your files, and sometimes it is possible to retrieve them from these previous versions,

however the virus sometimes deletes these too.

There is only really 3 things you can do to protect yourself: 1) Keep your computer operating system (Windows or Mac) and anti-virus

program up to date. Pyramid Hill Golf Club Tuesday evening the Pyramid Hill Golf Club held its AGM. In the President’s report, Tony Mullins spoke of this year’s challenges, in particular keeping up with the fast growing grass on the course. To keep the course playable it had to be mown every week, that is a lot of mowing. He also spoke of the mini revamp of the club house with the laying of new carpet and the purchase of a golf cart, a real must in this day and age. Overall the Tournament numbers were up and Tony thanked all of those that contributed to this years clubs success. The incoming committee is as follows:

DayDayDayDay Pyramid Hill & District Historical Society & Pioneer Machinery Inc held an open day at Mitchell Park on Sunday October 16 2016. The weather was overcast and no glare. Mr. Peter Walsh MP launched the book, “Sale O Hooroo and Sundries 1890-1899” taken from the Pyramid Hill Adver-tiser. They came, they went and what they did in between. With this book we caught up with a lot of people who slipped through the net in “Profiles of our Past” and “Weddings Great & Small 1890-1899” who were part of the community during this time. With Family History being such a big pastime we can now help more peo-ple with that little extra towards their fami-ly tree. To our knowledge no other Histori-cal Society has produced a book of this

nature.

Mr. John Forbes, OAM responded to Peter Walsh and if you read John’s book “Forbesy” you will know what he was talk-

ing about

Our thanks to all the stall holders, donors of the raffles, owners of classic cars, Bill Boyd for guess the weight of the sheep, Catalina Band who had the crowd singing along and last but not least the Footy- net

ladies for their catering

If you would like a book or a Christmas present they are available from Pyramid Post & News, Raeleen or at the Museum every Tuesday or whenever the door is open. The book sells for $30 and includes

Parish maps.

Tuesday Night Netball

The nights games kicked off with two of the competition heavy weights looking to make a statement. The first quarter was hotly contested and Pink held a one point lead at quarter time. Unfortunately for Pink the "old man" of the competition started to tire and Blue took full advantage to go into half time with a four goal lead. In the second half Pink tried to close the gap but to no avail with Blue winning 38 goals to 30. In the second game the stakes were just as high with the Red team looking to get off the bottom of the ladder. The Green team were with out their inspirational leader and it showed as they seemed to struggle to find any rhythm the first half with Red having a handy 9 goal lead by the long break. The second half saw the Green team claw back the margin but it wasn't enough as Red held their nerve to chalk up their second win with 29 goals to 22. Only percentage separates the sides now so this will insure an entertaining rematch in 5 weeks time. Next week sees Red v Pink at 7pm and Blue v Purple at 8pm. Green has the bye.

Andy, Allan F & Allan J won their first game in magnificent style, but from there it was all downhill. The solitary score in the last game looked a bit sad against the 17 shots accumulated by their opponents. So, that leaves us with the question this week… Where’s the chicken joke? Martin Luther Chicken Jr. said: "I dream of a world where chickens can cross roads and not be questioned of their reason!" Mid-week Friday Pennant: As reported last week, Mid-week Pennant became Friday Pennant, but similarly to Saturday there was very little joy. The main difference was that the match was played at Pyramid and the weather was not quite as cold. Many of the players were the same, just different combinations and a few less men.

Division 1 could not find a win

anywhere. Kate (Skip), Marie N., Ian

and Jean made a miraculous

comeback after lunch and a very

tardy start. They finished a creditable

5 shots short of the win (22-27)

considering the calibre of the

opposition. Lionel may think Jean

had already taken the catch of the

year when she snared him and got

him hitched, but she showed she

could still scoop up the goods when

she deftly caught the dizzying third

who almost toppled onto the pool of

bowls. Her quick reflexes saved

what could have been a very messy

situation. Great catch, Jean – again!!

Jan (Skip), Glenys, Brian & Helen

were right in the mix for most of the

game but fell away in the finish to go

down (20-31). Nola (Skip), Marg,

Andy & Graham went down 12-24.

Pyramid Bowling Club It can only be deduced that Mother Nature is not in favour of bowls – or at least Pennant Bowls. A study of the weather forecasts for the immediate fortnight show a prediction for rain and strong winds on the scheduled days for Pennant matches. Really??!! Aren’t there enough challenges when playing bowls without always having to contend with the crazy elements!! Saturday Pennant And true to form, Mother Nature did her best to make bowling as uncomfortable as possible on Saturday when the bitter winds were enough to freeze the flames in the fireplace! Despite layers of clothing, the cold made our fingers stiff and not even the hand warmers could get the blood flowing to our extremities. Only the opposition was running hot. It was a miserable day with some very miserable scores as we took on the very powerful Cohuna teams. Results: Division 1- Fred (skip), Laurie, Marie N. & Bill took a while to adjust to the conditions and after winning the first end with two shots stagnated for quite a while before adding to that score. Fortunately, the warm cuppa at half time got the blood flow circulating and they managed to peg back the opposition to reach a 15-15 draw on the 15th end. From there it was a tight struggle to ascertain the lead and hang on to a two shot win (21-19). Full credit must be given to Fred who held his team (Laurie, Marie N & Bill) together with some outstanding precision bowling. Being the only winning rink for the day they were clear winners of the Incentive Award this week. Lionel (Skip), Kate, Jean & Andy went from riches to rags. After claiming the accolades last week they came up against a much more skilful team this week and could only muster up a meagre 9 shots to 38. It didn’t matter what they did, their opponents could pull out something extra special to top it!

But, like true champions they fronted up to the Kerang Golf tournament the next day and came away with the Runners’-Up prize. After a bad experience it’s always good to get back on the horse! Beau (Skip), Marie S, Jan & Graham competed strongly but like others had some wayward heads. Well down at the break, they worked their way back to end just 9 shots in arrears (16-25). When the siren finally sounded to call full time the tally showed that we were well beaten (46-82) and players made their escape from the cold, and the embarrassment, to the warmth of the Clubrooms and the warm friendship of the Cohuna folk. Division 3: were unable to register a winning rink this week, however their scores were slightly more respectable. Brian (Skip) Nola., George & Lorraine F were the best performers and only missed out on the win by two shots (21-23). Jan (Skip), Lorraine D, Robyn & Rose kept abreast of their opponents for the first part of the game but succumbed toward the end to lose by 16 shots (15-31). Allan F., Neil, Beth & Alan J had a tougher day again going down 16-27. They are gradually creeping up to the winning stalls. Overall Cohuna won 52-81. Round four sees us hosting Leitchville in Division 1 and Kerang Blue in Division 3. Let’s hope for a fine day and great bowling.

The 60 and Over games were played on

our home turf this last week and what a

sight that was!! It seems a decade since

we had the greens filled to capacity- every

rink utilised and the Club rooms bursting

at the seams when all the players filed in

for afternoon tea. High praise must be

extended to Allan F who managed the

organisation of the day, and to the ladies

who prepared dozens upon dozens of

plates of sandwiches. The venue looked in

peak condition and the compliments about

the presentation of our Bowling facilities

were flowing. Having to assist a visiting

team with the provision of a Sub meant

that our own lads played a player short.

In Division 2, Lorraine, Bill & Rose showed everyone how it is done and came away with a good win and the Incentive Award 21-14. Sadly, Gladys (Skip), Alan J. and Leigh along with Robyn (Skip), Wayne & Beth found the opposition far too strong and recorded scores that are best left unprinted or at least feature in small type. (5-37 and 4-37 respectively). As a word of encouragement, Dr Suess once said, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” But in your case it might best be reversed: “Don’t cry because it happened. Smile because it’s over.” It was a comprehensive win to Cohuna in both Divisions. Our match this week saw us heading in different directions for our Mid-week game. Division 1 made the journey to Barham Sports while Division 2 hosted the other Barham Sports team. Results of the day: Division 1: Kate, Marie N., Ian & Jean held on to win by 5 shots (24-19) Marie S., Marg, Glenys & Helen lost (9-37) Jan, Nola, Andy & Graham lost (18-24) Overall win to Barham Sports (51-80)

Division 2: Had a wonderful day.

All rinks produced winning totals. Well done, to them. There were big smiles all round. Robyn, Dawn & Bill were the most successful tem and winners of the Incentive Award (26-11) Lorraine, Gladys & Rose won (21- 18) Jenny, Allan F & Beth won (22-18). A fantastic victory 69-47. May it be the start of more good things to come!

Well here’s a thought: An arrow can

only be shot by pulling it backwards. So

when life (or bowls) is pulling you back

with difficulties or challenges, it means

that it’s going to launch you into

something great. So just focus and keep

aiming.

Lawn Bowls Legends! (PHC Students)

“Great Bowl! Go Wider! Allow for the draw! OOhhhhhh. OOPS! I’ve done it!“ (Direct quotes!) All words used by our enthusiastic Lawn Bowls Legends in Year nine and ten who represented the College with great enthusiasm and gusto, at the NCD Lawn Bowls Carnival held in St. Arnaud last Thursday. Teagan “The Terror” Stewart, Adam ”Silk“ Gilbert, Kevan ”Cool Cat” Coronacion, Feliz “Fearless” Garchitore-na, Julia “Hot shot” Fernandez, Sammi “Quick Draw” Treacy, Olivia “Trust Me” Pickersgill, Jessica “The Gun“ Gunther and John “Vintage” Caburnay, all played almost flawless Lawn Bowls finishing a sensational 3rd place overall for the day. Most valuable Bowlers for the day went to the team of Silk Gilbert, who was cool under pressure winning many ends with his last ball attack, Vintage Caburnay, who showed great patience and leadership and Cool Cat Coronacion, who was consistent in his bowling all day. Most improved goes to the team of The Terror Stewart, Trust Me Pickersgill and The Gun Gunther who decided to watch their bowls all the way down the green…..eventually. Most determined goes to Hot Shot Fernandez, Fearless Garchitorena and Quick Draw Treacy who celebrated each successful bowl with enthusiasm, and dance moves. Thank you teams for participating in the day, representing the College with pride and to Pyramid Hill Bowling Club for lending us the bowls.

There is an opportunity to compete at local swim meets under the Kerang Swimming Club. I am considering combining the training with the advanced class 2 if there is enough interest. Anyone competing will need to attend 3 training sessions per week. One of these sessions will be free of charge as I may have to bring my children and the other sessions will be at the same cost as the Advanced lessons. The lessons will run through the pool season with a break from the 19/12/2016 to the 8/01/2017 finishing on the week of the 17/02/2017. Lessons cost $60 for the full 10 weeks at one lesson a week and the advanced classes, intermediate class 2 and squad will be $120 for the full 10 weeks at two lessons per week. My qualifications include the AUSTswim courses of Swimming and Water Safety, Infant and Preschool, Competitive Swim Strokes, First Aid and CPR. I also have my working with children’s check. Please contact me to register your or your child’s interest by the 1st of November. [email protected] 043 889 4437

Pyramid Fiesta What a wonderful extravaganza the ‘Pyramid Hill Fiesta’ proved to be! Wonderful food and extraordinary entertainment, we really could not have asked for anything more ……. maybe warmer weather. Our College community were huge contributors and I was incredibly proud of the effort and commitment by our students, staff and parents. So many worked very hard prior to and on the night, ensuring that everything went smoothly. From the music ‘roadies’ to the waitresses, the photo booth creators, the artistic banners and bunting; the huge food entourage, every individual effort created a magnificent collective that overall made our ‘Fiesta’ a magnifi-cent community event. Thank you to all our students who participated in the dance items and a very special thank you to our senior students who choreographed the dances, which certainly showcased our student talent. To our Kool Skool musicians, you certainly wowed the crowd. The musical items performed were fantastic and left the crowd wanting more live music. Special thanks to Mrs Rogers who has put in a lot of time and effort with the Kool Skools group ensuring the music was first class! Finally the food, what can be said about the food! It was not only a huge logistical exercise to cater for in excess of 500 people; the food was absolutely amazing! A true blend of cultural delights. A huge thank you to our food coordinator Leanne Talbot. Behind her was a team of students, staff and community helpers who did an outstanding job. The feedback from this event has been so positive - thank you again, to all involved. Fiona Moon

Congratulations To everyone involved with the Fiesta. It was a wonderful day and the meal and nibbles

were delicious. WELL DONE!! June Ballis

Tinikling is a traditional Philippine dance which involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. Dancers imitate the tikling bird’s legendary grace and speed by skilfully manoeuvring between the bamboo poles.
