4 Prevention of Elec tro Static Discharge (ESD) to Elec trostatically Sensitive (ES) Devices
Som e sem icond uc tor (solid state ) devic es c an b e da ma ge d ea sily by electric ity. Suc h co mp one nts c om mo nly are c alledElec trosta tica lly Sensitive (ES) Devic es. Exam p les of t yp ica l ES devic es a re integ rated c irc uits and som e field-e ffec ttransistorsand sem icond uc tor c hip c om po nents. The follow ing tec hniques should b e used to help red uc e the incide nc eof c omp onent d am ag e c aused by e lec tro static d ischa rge (ESD).
1. Imme diately before hand ling any semico nduc tor co mp onent o r semico nduc tor-eq uipe d assemb ly, drain offany ESD on your bo dy b y touc hing a known ea rth ground. Alternatively, ob tain and we ar a c om me rcially ava ilab ledisc harging ESD wrist strap, w hichshould be rem ove d for po tential shoc k reasons prior to ap plying po we r to the unit undertest.
2. After rem oving a n elec trica l assem bly eq uiped with ES de vices, plac e the a ssem bly on a c ond uc tive surfac e
suc h a s aluminium foil, to p revent elec trostatic c harge build up or exposure of the assem bly.
3. Use o nly a g round ed -tip soldering iron to solder or unsolde r ES devic es.
4. Use o nly an a nti-sta tic solder remo ver d evic e. Som e solder remo va l dev ice s not c lassified as an ti-sta tic (ESDprotec ted) c an ge nerate elec trica l cha rge to d am ag e ES devices.
5. Do not use freon-prop elled c hem ica ls. These c an ge nerate elec trica l cha rge s suffic ient to d am ag e ES de vice
6. Do not remove a replac eme nt ES de vice from its protective p ac kage until imm ediately before you a re read yto install it. (Most rep lac em ent ES de vices are p ac kag ed with lea ds elec tric ally shorted to ge ther by c ond uc tive foam ,aluminium foil orc omp arab le c onduc tive ma terial).
7. Imm ed iately before rem oving the p rote c tive mate rial from the lea ds of a replac em ent ES de vice, touc h theprote c tive ma terial to the c hassis or c irc uit assem bly into whic h the de vice will be installed.
Caution
Be sure no power is applied to the chassis or circuit, and observe all other safety precautions.
8. Minimize b od y mo tions whe n ha ndling unpa c kag ed replac em ent ES de vices. (Otherwise ha rmless mo tionsuc h as the brushing tog ether of your clothe s fab ric or the lifting o f your foo t from a c arpe ted floo r ca n ge nerate staticelec tric ity (ESD) sufficient to dama ge an ES devic e).
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICEThere a re spe c ial com po nents used in this eq uipme nt which are important fo r safe ty.These pa rts a re ma rked b y in the sc hem at ic diag rams, Explode d Views and replac em ent pa rts list. It is essential that these

5 Handling the Lead-free Solder
5.1 About lead free solder (PbF)
Distinc tion o f PbF P.C.B.:P.C.B.s (ma nufa c tured ) using lead free solder will ha ve a PbFsta mp on t he P.C.B.
Caution: Pb free solde r has a higher melting po int thansta nd a rd sold er; Typ ica lly the melting p oint is 50 - 70F (30 -40C) h ighe r. Please use a high t em perat ure soldering iron.In c ase of solde ring iron with tem pe rature c ontrol, plea se setit t o 700 20F (370 10C). Pb free solde r will tend to splash when he ate d toohigh (a bou t 1100F/ 600C) . When soldering o r unsoldering, plea se c om pletelyrem ove all of the solde r on the p ins or solder a rea , and besure to he a t the soldering p oints with the Pb free solder untilit melts eno ugh.
6 Handling Prec autions For Traverse Deck
The laser diode in the trave rse d ec k (op tic al pickup) m ay b rea k dow n due to p ote ntial differenc e c aused by static e lectricof c lothes or human b od y.So, be c areful of elec trostatic b rea kdow n during repa ir of the traverse d ec k (optica l pic kup).
Hand ling of trave rse d ec k (op tica l pic kup)
1. Do no t subjec t the traverse d ec k (op tica l pickup ) to static elec tricity as it is extrem ely sensitive to elec trica l shoc k.
2. To prevent the b reakdo wn of the laser diod e, a n a ntistatic shorting pin is inserted into the flexible b oa rd (FFC b oa rd).
3. Take c are no t to ap ply exc essive stress to the flexible b oa rd (FFC b oa rd). When removing or c onnec ting the short pinfinish the job in as short time as possible.
4. Do no t turn the va riab le resistor (laser po we r ad justme nt). It ha s alrea dy be en a djusted .

Grounding for elec trostatic b reakd own preve ntion
1. Human bo dy g roundingUse the anti-static wrist strap to discharge the static electricity from your body.
2. Work tab le ground ingPut a c ond uc tive ma terial (sheet) o r steel sheet o n the a rea whe re the trave rse d ec k (optica l pic kup) is plac e, and
ground the sheet.
Caution :The static elec tricity of your c lothes will not b e g round ed through the wrist strap. So, ta ke c are no t to let your clothes touch ttraverse deck (optical pickup).
Caution when replac ing the Traverse DeckThe trave rse d ec k has a short po int shorted with solde r to p rote c t the laser diod e ag ainst elec trostatic s brea kdow n. Be sure remove the solde r from the short point be fore ma king c onne c tions.
7 Prec aution of Laser Diode
CAUTION:
This unit u tilizes a c lass 1 laser.
Invisible laser radiation is emitted from the optical pickup lens.
Wavelength: 780nm
When the unit is turned on:
1. Do not look direc tly into the pic k up lens.
2. Do no t use o ptic al instrume nts to loo k at the p ick up lens.
3. Do no t ad just the p reset va riab le resistor on the p ickup lens.
4. Do not disassem ble the op tica l pick up unit.
5. If the optic al pick up is replac ed , use the ma nufac turers spe c ified replac em ent p ick up only.
6. Use o f c ontrol or ad justme nts or pe rformanc e o f p roc ed ures othe r than tho se spe c ified herein ma y result inhazardous radiation expo sure.
CAUTION!
THIS PRODUC T UTILIZES A LASER.USE OF CONTROLS OR ADJUSTMENTS OR PERFORMANC E OF PROCEDURES OTHER THANTHOSE SPECIFIED HEREIN
