30 the doctors’ prescription for healthy living
We have all heard the alarming reports onthe prevalence of type 2 diabetes, butdo we know how it works? Or one of the
most promising new ways to help fi ght it? According to microbiologist Alfred E. Fox, PhD,
“Type 2 diabetes is considered to be a metabolicdefi ciency treatable by exercise, dietary controland supplementation.” One of the most importantsupplements to consider is high-quality fi rst-milkingcolostrum, like that from Immune Tree. Colostrumcontains important components to help supportmetabolism and thus help combat type 2 diabetes.
While type 1 diabetes occurs when the bodydoes not produce enough insulin (a hormone that
helps your cells use glucose properly), type2 diabetes, or insulin resistance, is a con-dition in which the pancreas producesenough insulin, but the metabolic pathwayfor processing glucose (sugar that is amain source of energy used by the body)
is impaired. According to a study in the April 2009 issue of
the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, “bovine co-lostrum can decrease levels of blood glucose andketones [compounds that are produced when thebody burns fat for energy or fuel], as well as re-duce cholesterol and triglycerides, all of which maycause complications in type 2 diabetic patients.”

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is apotent hormone that interacts with almost every cellin the body, is found abundantly in colostrum andmay help fi ght diabetes. Fox explains that “IGF-1is absolutely necessary for normal cell growth andfor normal metabolism.” Unfortunately, we do nothave an endless supply of IGF-1. As we age, ourbody’s ability to create an adequate supply of IGF-1diminishes. “By eating a well-balanced diet andmaintaining a constant supply of IGF-1 in our body,we can keep the ship moving at the right speed inthe right direction,” says Fox.
Leptin, also present in colostrum, is a hormone-like protein that may help suppress appetite andregulate metabolism of fats. Thus, Fox states, “Wecan conclude that making sure that we have sufficient quantities of IGF-1 and leptin in the blood-stream, as would occur by dietary supplementationwith a high-quality fi rst-milking colostrum, meansassurance of more effective regulation of protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism.” Colostrum, coupled with a well-balanced diet and exercise, may contribute to a leaner body mass and as aresult decrease the likelihood of developing type2 diabetes.
IMMUNE TREE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH “It is also very, very important to recognize that allcolostrum products are not the same and, despitethe claims made by their manufacturers, they donot all contain every benefi cial component at anoptimum concentration and, in many cases, theyhave been manipulated and may be missing someof the essential components,” says Fox. “Whenchoosing a colostrum product, you should becertain it is made from only fi rst-milking bovinecolostrum collected within six to eight hours afterbirth of the calf and that the colostrum is‘complete’ and that none of the components havebeen removed, including the fat.” Fox goes on tosay, “I have personally been responsible for testingof several different brands of colostrums forhuman use and can attest that the results provethat the products distributed by Immune Treecontain the highest-quality complete bovine co-lostrums available today.”
