WHO WE ARE
MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN & DIRECTOR:
CHRIS STEPHENS & SONIA CHHATWAL
The DHL UK Foundation is a registered charity that helps disadvantaged children and young people aged 5 years to 25 years from across the UK. Our activities are focussed on helping these young people to get the most out of their education and supporting them into employment.
We do this by partnering with a number of national
charities who are experts in these areas and run
programmes that are based close to DHL sites.
We also encourage DHL colleagues to use their
passion and skills to maximise the impact we can
have on the lives of our young beneficiaries.
In 2016, the Trustees requested a Strategic
Review of all of the Foundation’s work that
included in-depth interviews with senior
representatives from across the DHL businesses.
The outcomes of the Review, summarised in this
document, provide a clear roadmap for our future
and mark the beginning of a very exciting
development in the Foundation’s history.
We have set ourselves ambitious targets around
increasing the number of beneficiaries we help as
well as the number of DHL colleagues we engage in
our programmes. We also want the impact of our
work to be independently evaluated so that we
gain a greater understanding of the difference we
are making now and how we could be even more
effective in the future in supporting the children
and young people who need our help most.
We will report back on our performance against
these targets on an annual basis and look forward
to keeping you up-dated about our progress.
Chris Stephens, Chairman, DHL UK Foundation
Sonia Chhatwal, Director, DHL UK Foundation

backgrounds in the UK should have access to

to prepare for the world of work and the
chance to achieve their full potential.
MISSIONFor the Foundation, our charity partners,
the DHL business and colleagues across the
UK to work together to support and inspire
our beneficiaries.
The Trustees have agreed that the
Foundation’s support should be focussed
on three key areas of:

students to get the most out of their
education during important stages of their
time in primary and secondary school, college
and university – helping them to become
work ready and to develop life and
citizenship skills.
EMPLOYABILITY Partnering with charities that help young
people from disadvantaged backgrounds
learn about the world of work, the logistics
industry and DHL.

”CASE STUDY: DELIVERING AN INSPIRING GUEST TEACHER LESSON
CASE STUDY: COACHING A NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHER
Paul Manley and Jen Chance from DHL Express
UK First Choice teamed up with Phil Couchman
to visit the Logic Studio School in Feltham to
give an inspiring guest teacher lesson to Year
10 Geography students.
Lee is one of 32 DHL colleagues nationwide coaching a newly
qualified teacher. After attending a half day training session,
Lee has supported his matched teacher through one-to-one
coaching throughout the academic year.
“Logistics isn’t necessarily an industry that
instantly springs to mind for school leavers, so
it was great to be able to give these students
a flavour of what a career in logistics could
mean and the international opportunities that
it presents.”“It’s so inspiring to see the person developing and growing in confidence,
and it just makes you feel good. I’ve helped them with their work-life
balance and to develop leadership skills. The programme has helped me
be a better mentor and leader, and really reflect on how to get the best
out of myself and the people I work with.”

EDUCATION“As one of the world’s largest employers,
we rely on access to highly qualified
employees around the globe. The goal of
our Group-wide GoTeach programme is to
improve educational opportunities and the
chance of employment for young people
from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are
therefore delighted to be partnering with the
DHL UK Foundation to deliver activities across
the UK. DHL colleagues share their time and
knowledge to help students get the most
out of their education and prepare for the
world of work, and in supporting GoTeach,
colleagues themselves gain invaluable
experience in skills such as leadership and
problem solving; it’s a win-win situation.”
Paul led the students in a number of
activities including piecing together a
giant jigsaw puzzle containing facts
about the global DHL Express business.

CASE STUDY: DEVELOPING EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS & CONFIDENCE THROUGH OUTDOOR LEARNING
CASE STUDY: CV AND INTERVIEW SKILLS WORKSHOP
Rob Wallace, Craig Bewley and Helen
Sexon mentored a group of 36 students on
a week-long outdoor education residential.
Four colleagues from across DHL ran a CV & Interview
Skills Workshop for 50 students at Weston Favell
Academy in Northampton.
Helen, Rob, Craig and the team helped the students
learn about CV’s, transferable skills and interview
techniques. Working in small groups, Helen and the
team have helped the students turn their hobbies
into key skills and experience for their CV.
“”
“My HR Business Partner put me
forward for the opportunity and
working with these students has
been brilliant for developing my
coaching, mentoring and
leadership skills. I’ve been really
proud to see the young people
grow in confidence.”
“The students are engaged,
responsive and really getting
stuck into the activities - you can
really see how much the students
have developed and learnt”
“It is vital that we increase awareness amongst the next
generation of the wide variety of career opportunities available
in the logistics industry, from robotics to human resources.
Engaging with students enables
us to inspire young people about
the world of work and encourage
young people to consider a
career in our sector”

EMPLOYABILITY
“It’s really important and
impactful for the students
to have the opportunity to
develop their CVs, interview
techniques and key
employability skills.
Thanks DHL!”
“The mock interview was the hardest and
scariest bit – but it prepared me for my first
real interview and made it so much easier!”
Helen Sexon,
DHL HR Director,
Global Life Sciences & Healthcare
Harrison, Year 11 student, Weston
Favell Academy, Northampton
“Camping, hiking, kayaking – you name it, we did it all in the rain! It was a real challenge for the young people and they were out of their comfort zones. But they pulled together, and as a team they rose to the challenge. Superb week.”

CASE STUDY: TRANSFORMING LOCAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
CASE STUDY: WALKING TO BEAT POVERTY IN KNOWSLEY
Thanks to the efforts of 20 volunteers and a
£10,000 grant from Transform It!, a former
flooded playing field has been transformed
into an all-purpose, multi-sensory beach school
– a place where students can experience den
building, cooking, sensory learning, pond
dipping and rock scrambling.
Eight DHL colleagues from the DHL JLR site in
Halewood decided to keep fit and walk 10,000 steps
a day for charity. Funds were raised with an entry
fee and fines if targets were not met.
One Match It! application, 40 days, and over
three million steps later the funds were used
to provide food and necessities for the local
community through The Big Help Project,
the sites chosen local charity.
“
”“This was an ambitious project that brought
the seaside to the Midlands! I am proud to
have been a part of bringing some magic
into these children’s lives and provide an
enriching learning experience for future
generations.”

success of our business. GoHelp programmes
like Match It!, Transform It! and Payroll Giving
enable employees across the UK to volunteer
and fundraise for charities close to their hearts.
Our colleagues are proud to work for a
company that celebrates their charitable
endeavours and that partners with the DHL UK
Foundation to help young people in need.”

1880’S - OCEAN GROUP AND THE HOLT FAMILY In the 1880s, the founding directors of
the Ocean Group, the Liverpool based
Holt family, established the Philip Holt
Charitable Trust and Benevolent Fund.
1980’S - NATIONAL FREIGHT CORPORATION The National Freight Corporate (NFC)
was one of the first businesses to be
privatised under Margaret Thatcher
in the early 1980s.
1988 - NFC FOUNDATION FORMED The Directors of the National Freight Corporation
formed the NFC Foundation in 1988. The management
had a profound belief that big business could and
should make a difference to society—so following in
the footsteps of the Victorian industrialists, they set
up a charitable trust with one per cent of the share
capital from the privatisation of the business, forming
the NFC Foundation.
2005 In late 2005 Exel was acquired
by Deutsche Post DHL, creating
the global logistics company we
know today.
2000 - EXEL FOUNDATION As a result of the merger between the Ocean
Group and NFC, Exel PLC was formed in 2000 -
bringing together these two distinguished
Grandparents.
The NFC Foundation and PH Holt Benevolent
Fund were then combined to become the
Exel Foundation.
1880-2000 HOLT CHARITABLE TRUST For over 100 years the Philip Holt Charitable Trust
gave money to community projects in areas where
the company worked and the Benevolent Fund
supported employees and their dependants who
were in need.
1974 - DHL COMES TO THE UK DHL, the first international express delivery service
established by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and
Robert Lynn (D, H & L) first established it’s UK
operations in 1974, spurred by the increasing
importance of London as a key financial centre.
2002 - DEUTSCHE POST In 2002 Deutsche Post became the majority
shareholder of DHL.
2008 - DHL UK FOUNDATION In September 2008 the Exel Foundation was renamed the DHL UK Foundation. The original charitable trust
money has been invested wisely and today still provides significant income to fund the DHL UK Foundation
community programmes. The DHL UK businesses also make a substantial donation towards our work. The
Philip Holt Charitable Trust was reborn as the PH Holt Foundation in 2006 and continues its grant-making
work, primarily in the Merseyside area.
The DHL UK Foundation’s focus still reflects the vision of those who set it up more than 100 years ago – that together
employees and the business can help and improve the communities in which they work, especially the lives of
disadvantaged children and young people. The Foundation has two distinguished Grandparents, with roots stretching back
into the 1880’s – the National Freight Corporation and the Liverpool based Holt family, the directors of the Ocean Group.
