Welcome to our Alumni Symposium

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Diabetes Hope

Foundation’s first Alumni Symposium. With

support from our generous community partners,

corporate sponsors and exhibitors, we have been

able to host this exciting new event for our alumni,

their families and the diabetes community.

Since 1999, Diabetes Hope Foundation has

awarded 686 scholarships to secondary students with diabetes from

across Canada. Through this inaugural event, the foundation hopes

to bring together alumni families from coast to coast to join us in

celebrating the 20th year of Diabetes Hope Foundation's Scholarship

Program.

The theme of our symposium is “Our Lives, Our World, Our Future.”

The objective of the symposium is to prepare T1D youth and their

families for life after university and transition into young adulthood.

We have a great program lined up for today, featuring 7 professional

speaking panels and a special panel of parents to support youth and

their families. Our 31 type 1 speakers and moms have been specially

curated by our Alumni Board and planning committee to provide a

broad spectrum of professional and educational experience to support

the transitioning needs of all youth living with type 1 diabetes.

Our hope is that you come away from this event inspired by the lived

experiences of our alumni, more prepared to move into the next stage

of your type 1 journey, with a new network of friends to support your

transition into young adulthood.

Thank you for attending our event, and we look forward to seeing you

again in the future.

Sincerely,

Barbara Pasternak,

Founder and Chair

In light of the challenges Aviva faced (and continues to face) living with T1D, Debbie became involved with the diabetes community by raising awareness through speaking engagements and participating in the annual Walk for a Cure for T1D for the last 15 years. She provided mentoring to support parents and families affected by T1D, later chairing the mentorship program and training future mentors. Debbie has also chaired anti-bullying and anti-racism initiatives for youth. She is President of Menarah Investments Limited, involved in industrial property management.

Dana Greenberg 2017 Alumni Mother

Dana Greenberg was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1972, at the age of 7. Her youngest daughter Marley was diagnosed with T1D 10 years ago at the age of 8. Dana had always been involved in the T1D community but became further immersed in it once Marley was diagnosed. She quickly came to realize that she was in a unique position -- she understood what it means to be both a T1D and what it means to be a parent of a T1D!

Dana became involved with the Diabetes Hope Foundation in 2017 when Marley received a DHF scholarship. Dana is an active volunteer with many diabetic organizations in Toronto, where she chairs various committees, takes on speaking engagements, and mentors other families living with T1D. Dana worked as a professional fundraiser for over 20 years and currently works with her husband running a home inspection business.
