Our first month as 18N has come to a close, but July was very busy month as thousands of Lions from around the world trained, traveled, shared ideas and “conventioned” it up in the beautiful city of Hamburg, Germany the first two weeks of the month. Coming home, we have all now jumped in with both feet and rolled up our sleeves and are gearing up for our ex-citing year ahead.

I wish I could bottle the enthusiasm and passion for the dreams for this year that we all left Germany with and give each of the Lions of 18N a good dose of it so we would all more than surpass meeting our goals this year. Alas that is not a reality, so we will do this vision another way.

Over the next 2 weeks, different groups of 18N Lions will be receiving memos from me that will have the outlines for their part that will enable us to fulfill the ability to “Follow Our Dream” this year. At our first cabinet meeting on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Geor-gia Lions Camp for the Blind located in Waycross, Ga., the full outline for this year will be shared with all in attendance of which my first dream is that every club will be represented at this first cabinet meeting of this year. We will be sending out a memo prior to meeting and getting head count for attendance and will request reasons why at least one member from a club would possibly not be able to attend.

Our goals that will be shared will become all of the Lions of 18N’s responsibility to be part of accomplish-ing this year. Our 1st and 2nd VDG’s will have projects they will be overseeing with the clubs as well and these projects will be complimentary to the main theme.

I will also be finalizing my clubs visit schedule over the next two weeks and I am looking forward to seeing all of you throughout the year. Although I have as-signed clubs to be visited by my 1st and 2nd VDG’s, I

will be visiting all of the clubs this year either by attending one of your zone meetings or by offering my hands to help with a fundraiser or a community ser-vice project on an evening or a Saturday scheduled event.

I want to know what is going on in our District this year. Do not hesitate to contact me. No matter wheth-er you want to share goods news or concerns, please feel free contact me. That is what I am here for. If there is a way possible I can get assistance to you to help, know that I will turn over every stone to find it.

Visiting each others’ clubs and events, helping each other in zone projects, supporting our LCIF, Light-house, Camp for the Blind, Leader Dog and all of our community service programs, all are ways we will be communicating to al of the people in 18N that our Li-ons are here for them and are “Networking To Serve!”

See you all August 17th at the Camp! “FOLLOW YOUR DREAM”

In Hamburg, attendees to the final plenary session, received a sticker pictured above. IP Barry Palmer asked the attendees to pledge an estimate of the num-ber of people they will sponsor as Lions in the coming year.

As we begin a new year of community service. We are called to a new commitment of service. Perhaps we need to think about the following pledge.

I Promise to ask ___ of my friends and business partners to become Lions.

I Promise to sponsor ___ new Lions.

I Promise to support my Lions Club in its community activities.

I Promise to support my Lions District.

I Promise to support the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind.

I Promise to support the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.

I Promise to support Leaders Dogs for the Blind.

I Promise to support Southeast Guide Dogs.

I Promise to support LCIF.

I Promise to make the difference in someone’s life.

I am a Lion! I SERVE!

LARRY F. VARNADOE 2VDG - DISTRICT 18 N

I would like to pref-ace this article by say-ing to all the Lions of District 18 N, my appre-ciation for allowing me to serve as your 2nd Vice District Governor. I want so much to prove worthy of your faith and confidence in me, and say “thank you” to those in whose steps I follow, who have so ably have prepared the way.

I was born July 6th, 1937, in Lumber City, Georgia. My parents, now deceased, were the late Thad and Thelma Sanders Varnadoe. I was educated in the pub-

lic school of Cordele, Georgia. I hold degrees from Truett-McConnell College, Shorter College, Southwest-ern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service.

I have been a member of the National Funeral Di-rectors Association, the Georgia Funeral Directors As-sociation, the British Institute of Embalmers, and cur-rently hold membership in the Georgia Academy of Graduate Embalmers.

I am a church musician having served churches in Gainesville, Baxley FBC, Vidalia FBC, Port Wentworth FBC, Baxley Ten Mile Baptist, Garden City, Tifton FBC, and Tifton First Presbyterian. I currently serve as church organist and director of the Senior Adult Choir of FBC Jesup.

MY FAMILY:

I am married to the former Jean Tanner Goldwire of Baxley. When I married Jean I took on not only the duties of a husband, but the duties of a father to three teenagers, Mark, Lynn, and Laura. After thirty-nine years, our family has grown to six grandchildren (five girls and one boy), three great-grandchildren, and two more on the way. Jean and I are proud of our family and they have been very supportive of us. They have attended many of our Lion functions through the years. Lest I forget, we have had the pleasure of helping to raise our “granddogs.”

MY LIFE AS A LION: I joined the Tifton Lions Club (18C) in June of

1988. In my time, in the Tifton Club, is served as Music Director and Pianist from 1988-2005, Tail Twister 1990-1991, White Cane Chair 1990-1991, 1st VP 2000-2001, President 2001-2002, received the Lion of the Month several times and received the Lion of the Year Award for 2004-2005. In 2005 we retired and made our transition to Baxley and transferred to the Baxley Lions Club.

HONORS RECEIVED: Lion of the Year (2004-2005) International President’s Beacon of Hope Award

(2010) International President’s Certificate of Appreciation

Award (2011) Melvin Jones Fellow (2011) ZONE CHAIR (Region 2, Zone 1): 2010-2011 - DG Jesse Powell 2011-20112 - DG Joe Bill Brannen 2012-2013 - DG Pat Powell

GOALS:

Let me challenge each Lion of this district to strive to follow those ideals that were laid down for us by our founder, Melvin Jones. We are now four districts in-stead of six because we have not been able to main-tain the necessary membership requirements for a dis-trict. Our new International President has a “Dream,” our District Governor has a “Dream,” and it is our re-sponsibility to make sure that these “DREAMS” are

realized. “I Believe” we can, because I know that “We can make a difference” if we work together to make our world a better place in which to live. The challenge is great, but as we show that true “LION SPIRIT,” nothing is impossible as, “WE SERVE.”

Thank you again for Lion Jean and myself the op-portunity to serve District 18 N. Do not hesitate to call me if I can be of service to your club. Lion Jean and I look forward to visiting with as many clubs as possible during the course of this year and years to come. I pray God’s richest blessings upon you and yours, and “May God Bless AMERICA.”

One of the themes of this newsletter is the introduction of the district leadership of Lions District 18-N. In this article, I will introduce myself and provide a background of my experience as a Lion and the services I pro-vide. In future articles, I hope to introduce the Cabinet Secre-tary, Cabinet Treasurer, all Zone Chairs and the Vice Presi-dent of the Camp for the Blind.

Hi, my name is Lion Richard Mizell, since my child-hood, my friends and family has always called me Rick. I was invited to become a Lion in November 1989, my sponsor was the pastor of my church. I was not really sure why I wanted to be a Lion until I witnessed the effect community service had in providing sight saving services for people who had no other way in getting help.

After joining the Savannah Port City Lions Club, I was put to work right away. First as Lion Tamer where I learned the name of every Lion in the club. The follow-ing year, I was persuaded to serve as 1st Vice Presi-dent. The next year I became President of the club.

In the years since, I have served in every club posi-tion. In District 18-B, I served as Cabinet Secretary twice and Zone Chair once. I was asked to take over

the District Newsletter editing in 1998 and continued until June of this year. I was elected as Vice District Governor in 2003 and District Governor in 2004.

In 1998, I published the web page for the Savannah Port City Lions on the web. Later, I published the first web site for District 18-B and the first Lighthouse web site. I took over the MD18 Lions of Georgia Web site and changed the name to GALIONS.ORG. The galions website has been honored numerous times by LCI in the Multiple District Web site contest, eleven years in a row.

Early in my Lions career, I became involved with the Georgia Lions Lighthouse foundation. First as a club appointed director and as district director. I served as Vice President of the Lighthouse, 2001-2003 where I was honored as the Outstanding Vice President in 2002 and was presented with the Mildred Bingham Award in 2003.

I am a Melvin Jones Fellow, presented by district 18-B in 2005. I have received 2 International President’s Certificates of Appreciation, a International President’s Leadership medal and a International President’s med-al. I was inducted into the district Hall of Fame in 2010.

My current service is as follows; Club President, Savannah Port City Lions Club, District 18-N Newsletter Editor, District 18-N Web Master, District 18-N Infor-mation Technology Chair, 18-N PDG Association Sec-retary/Treasurer. MD 18 Lion Tamer, MD 18 State Uni-form Chair, MD 18 Information Technology Chair. Geor-gia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, District 18-N District Director.

As a Lion representing the Georgia Lions Light-house Foundation, I am available to speak to clubs about the Lighthouse. Please contact me at [email protected] to arrange a club visit.

Please make plans now to attend the joint Light-house Camp weekend, September 13-15 at the Macon Marriott City Center. Hotel reservations need to be made by August 14th to receive the special room rate.

Call 1-800-228-9290 to make reservations.

Fish Fry dinner will be held on Saturday, Septem-ber 14th at the Macon Marriott Conference Center, fol-lowing the day’s meetings. Dinner is $20/ person, cash or check will be accepted at the door. Contact Kelcie Lewis to make reservations: [email protected] 404.325.3630.

One last request, the Lions Lighthouse constitution allows 2 Lions form each district to serve on the board of directors of the Lighthouse. 1 Director is elected by each district and a Director at Large is appointed. I am looking for a special Lion who is willing to represent the Lighthouse to please contact me before the September joint meeting. Thanks, Rick Mizell, PDG

2012-2013 Peace Poster Winner

The 2012-2013 Peace Poster winner is 13 year old Jenny Park from Cali-fornia. The theme was "Imagine Peace"

Most schools start in August and so now is the time to take action for your Peace Poster Contest. If you have not or-dered your kits, you can get them from LCI. Your club Peace Poster Chair should contact your schools (or group) and de-liver the kits. The theme of this year's Peace Poster Contest is "Our World, Our Future". The 18N Peace Posters will be judged at the 2nd Cabinet Meeting in Brunswick.

This is a very easy youth project that has very little cost and can generate a lot of PR for your club. I hope that we have at least 10 entries. I had ordered 10 kits and have sold all of them, mostly to 18I clubs (old 18F clubs). With a new chap-ter in Lionism in Georgia, let's show the other districts what the Lions in 18N can do.

If you have any questions please contact me at 478-452-6929 or [email protected].

Our first District Cabinet Meeting is Saturday August 17 at the Camp for the Blind in Waycross. Meeting time is 1:30 PM. Printed copies of the State Directory will be distributed to club officers. The directory is available on-line at http://galions.org/directory/

We now have an active Public Relations Committee. The Chair of the committee is Lion Murray Silver. He has setup contact information with several newspapers and other media con-tacts in the district. This committee will be used to publish Lions activities to the public. To contact Lion Silver, his email is [email protected].
