What’s So Special About March?

Women’s History Month, March 1st-31st. Cable network A&E asked more than 360 jour-nalists, scholars, and politicians to rank the 100 most influential people of the last 1,000 years. Among those chosen were 12 women, including novelist Jane Austen (ranked 63 out of the 100), slave and abolitionist Harriet Tubman (71), Princess Diana (73), environmentalist Rachel Carson (87), and former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (93).

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. In Chicago, which has the most people of Irish descent in North America, the Chicago River is dyed green to celebrate the saint’s day. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, honors the priest who converted the Irish to Christianity in the fifth century. Legend has it that the saint drove the snakes out of Ireland, though, in fact, Ireland never had any snakes. The tale probably symbolizes his success in driving the pagans from Ireland, as snakes were often associated with pagan worship. In another bit of symbolism, St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the con-cept of the Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).

First Day of Spring, March 20th. Warmer weather arrives in the Northern Hemisphere though the Earth actually tilts away from the sun.

MARCH 2010 INSIDE EVERY ISSUE:

ERRATA: In February’s issue of Live & Explore on page 2 erroneously Ms. Rita Nieves appears as a CYSS Teen Center employee, she currently is a CYSS School Age Services Program employee.

On January 25- 28, 2010 our FMWR staff members attended the Change & The Human Di-mension Training Symposium 2010. The team flew to Louisville, Kentucky where they got training , professional development and education with the current Army focus and IMCOM Enterprise view. The main goal of the training was to provide a learning forum as a critical component of cultural transformation focused on implementing the Sol-dier-Family Action Plan to reduce stress on our Soldiers and Families.

Training symposiums are designed with input form the field and subject matter experts, so that our FMWR personel is up to date with all prac-tices. Be sure to ask this year’s attendees about the latest trends for CYSS , ACS , Outdoor Rec-reation and Marketing programs.

Social Networks; a new tool for Marketing at Fort Buchanan By: FMWR Marketing Branch

Top brands are increasingly embracing Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites as powerful marketing and advertising tools. At Fort Buchanan we’ve created a Facebook and Twitter accounts to in-crease our visibility by posting advertisements, creating events and talk about different topics related to things that are happening in the Base.

This initiative started at the end of August 2009 and as of today our Facebook page has over 4,800 members. The Twitter page is full of information and members keep following, but our Facebook page is the leader in members. Upcoming promotions and printed media like flyers and banners will include both of our FB and Twitter information so more people can take advantage of this tools.

The Marketing Office together with the Community Recreation Divi-sion manages both tools and posts important information daily. Every-thing from daily menus, family seminars, Fitness classes, Scuba lessons and special events. We market everything that is happening at all the facilities.

Our audience is a mix; we have a big amount of Army wives, students from our Antilles School, Army reserves and National Guard. The ad-vantage of Facebook is that not only do we provide information, but we receive feedback from our page members. They are letting us know what they would like to see in the base, how is their experience when they come to the base and giving us positive feedback from the informa-tion we are providing them.

This new technologies allow us to combine the power of interper-sonal influence with the reach of mass media. Facebook and Twitter are prime examples of how to create experiences that change behavior. These services motivate our people, facilitate information, and trigger actions among the Base.

In support of the Army Family Covenant, child care is available at no cost for at-tendees at FRG meetings and activities through garrison child care programs. FRG members requiring child care should contact the CYSS Parent Central Services Office located on building 152, tel. 787-707-3434 to ensure their children are registered and to learn about the types of FRG child care options available and specific garrison procedures to access this child care opportunity.

Family Readiness Support Assistants should coordinate times of FRG meetings and activities (no more than three hours) with the CYS Central Registration Office to ensure sufficient caregivers are available for scheduled FRG meetings.

Discovering Puerto Rico and it’s Attractions

Mayagüez

TEENS WANTEDThe Teen Center Re Opened! The facility shines after being revamped with new furniture and equipment!

Today, Mayagüez is the fifth-largest city and is considered one of the most impor-tant cities in the island. The city itself is centered around the impressive Spanish-style Plaza Colon, a tribute to Christopher Columbus, whose stature stands in the middle of the square, surrounded by 16 bronze statues.

In addition, Mayagüez has become a major college town with the establishment of the UPRM, the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Law School and the Pontiff Catholic Uni-versity of Puerto Rico.

Among Mayagüez’s main attractions you will find the Yagüez Theater and Mayagüez Post Office, which are considered historic landmark buildings, both located on McKinley Street.

Mayagüez is home of the only zoo in the island, Juan A. Rivero Zoo (commonly known as Mayagüez Zoo), home of numerous birds, mammals and reptiles (includ-ing Bengal tigers, and Andean condors among others). Cages and open compounds stand in an attractively landscaped setting of small islands, a lake, tropical vegetation and children’s playground. Open Wed-Sun from 8:30am to 4:00pm. (787) 834-8110.

On February 8th, 2010, after more than 3 months of the CAPECO explosion, the Teen Center finally re-opens to the delight and satisfaction of our Gar-rison ‘s teens.

The Teen Center located in Bldg. 519, right next the Post Library had been closed since October 23rd when Ft. Buchanan residents were awakened by the “Blast”. The center was badly damaged and the teens and the staff were re-located to Bldgs. 1142 and 1143 where the Middle School Program is established.

Although eventually teens and middle school students became used to their new circumstances, everyone was sorely missing having their “own separate space”.

To ensure that everyone had a comfortable and steady routine, soon it was decided that the Teen Center should re-open. But not just re-open but make it into a new, remodeled, wonderful space that met the youths needs and dreams.

New furniture was bought, the dreary walls covered with cool colors and art work, and state of the art electronic equipment and games installed. We have now three 52” flat screen TV’s, one 32” flat screen and two more coming up soon. There is also a brand new pool table and a re-modeled technology lab with 7 new stations and computers.

So please stop by and take a look at our new and improved Teen Center. We are looking for teens to enjoy the new facilities.

Preparing For Scuba with Scuba Diving Lessons In today’s world, where ordinary citizens and adrenalin-junkies alike are equally capable of chasing adventure, we turn to lessons to make sure we have the appropriate skills. We have lessons for golf, tennis, dance, and any other activity or hobby that can summoned to mind. But for those activities that come with risk, les-sons become even more important. Subsequently, those who are inter-ested in scuba diving should always begin with comprehensive scuba diving lessons.

If you are in good health, you can scuba dive. And with proper scuba diving lessons you can do so safely to ensure you get the most enjoy-

ment out of your experience as possible. As scuba diving continues to rise in popularity, Fort Buchan-an’s Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of courses for all ages. Luckily, the availability of lessons does not in any way depend on your proximity to the ocean. Scuba diving lessons are taught in indoor pools which gives the instructor maximum control and eliminates the variables that can easily arise in open water. For students, scuba diving lessons should be confidence building and the best way to achieve this confidence is by mastering your technique in a confined and controlled environment.

In most cases, however, scuba diving lessons actually begin with comprehensive classroom instruc-tion where students are given the basics of the scuba diving technique. Only when the instructor is comfortable that all students completely understand scuba techniques - and the reasons behind them - will you enter the pool. Equipment can also be rented for scuba diving lessons - an enormous benefit for those who are delaying the purchase of pricey equipment until they receive scuba certification.

Pool instruction during scuba diving lessons offer students the opportunity to put those classroom lessons into use, practicing techniques over and over until they are comfortable. It is essential that these systems are mastered.

There are scuba diving lessons that are offered for children and adults separately. Upon successful completion of your scuba diving lessons you will be certified for scuba diving; and you will be well on your way to enjoying a lifetime of adventure and exploration.

Michelle A Biography by Liza Mundy

She can be funny and sharp-tongued, warm and blunt, empathic and de-manding. Who is the woman Barack Obama calls “the boss”? In Michelle, Washington Post writer Liza Mundy paints a revealing and intimate portrait, taking us inside the marriage of the most dynamic couple in politics today. She shows how well the complement each other: Michelle, the highly organized, sometimes intimidating, list-making pragmatist; Barack, the introspective po-litical charmer who won’t pick up his socks but shoots for the stars. Their relationship, like those of many couples with two careers and two children, has been so strained at times that he has had to persuade her to support his climb up the political ladder. And you can’t blame her for occasionally regreting it:

In this campaign, it is Michelle who has absorbed much of the skepticism from voters about Obama. One conservative magazine put her on the cover under the headline “Mrs. Grievance.” Michelle’s story carries with it all the extraordinary achievements and lingering pain of America in the post-civil rights era. She grew up on the south side of Chicago, the daughter of a city worker and a stay-at-home mom in a neighborhood rocked by white flight. She was admitted to Princeton amid an angry debate about affirmative action and went to Harvard Law School, where she was more comfortable doing pro-bono work for the poor than gunning for awards with the rest of her peers. She became a corporate lawyer, then left to train community leaders. In this carefully reported biography, drawing upon interviews with more than one hundred people, including one with Michelle herself, Mundy captures the complexity of this remarkable woman and the remarkable life she has lived.

The Fort Buchanan Post Library celebrates Women’ History Month

Her WayThe Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham ClintonBy Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta, Jr.

She is one of the most influ-ential and recognizable figures in our country, and perhaps the single most divisive individual in our political landscape. She has been the subject of both hagiography and smear jobs. But although dozens of books have been written about her, none of them have written about her, none of them have come close to uncovering the real Hillary – personal, political, in all her compli-cations. She made her historic run for the presi-dency, Pulitzer Prize – winning New York Times reports Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr. bring us the first comprehensive and balanced portrait of the most important woman in American politics. Drawing upon myriad new sources and previously undisclosed documents, Her Way takes readers from the dorm rooms at Wellesley to the court-houses of Arkansas and Washington; to the White House and Hillary’s role as a First Lady like no other; to the back rooms of the Senate, where

On March 8, women all over the world celebrate International Women’s Day. A national holiday in many countries and commemorated by the United Nations, International Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history. Though often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and politi-cal differences, this day allows women everywhere to look back on a tradition of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. As a tribute to this tradition, Putumayo World Music presents an album that literally sings its praises. Women of the World: Acoustic is an exploration of acoustic music by some of the world’s leading female artists.Putumayo also presents Women of Latin America, a collection of poignant songs performed by excep-tional Latin divas including Mariana Montalvo from Chile, Brazil’s Belô Velloso (the niece of Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania) and one of Columbia’s best-known artists, Totó La Momposina.

Featured Book of the Month:she expertly navigates the political and legislative shoals; and to her multimillion-dollar mansion in Washington and her campaign war room. Her Way reveals the secret pact be-tween Hillary and Bill, made in the early 1970s, to capture the White House, and how once Bill was elected right on schedule, the plan was ex-panded to include a Hillary presidency. Van Natta and Gerth explain her fifteen-year rivalry with Al Gore and her new rivalry with Barack Obama. The book reveals more than a dozen instances in which Hillary apparently violated Senate ethics rules, her consulting a secret energy task force while in the Senate, remarkable new details about questionable legal work in Arkansas, new informa-tion about Vince Foster’s relationship with Hillary, and her secret role in keeping hidden the true story of her husband’s draft record. Gerth and Van Natta take us inside the complicated Clinton marriage, exploring how it has lasted – and why – through both political victories and the dark nights of betrayal. And they reveal, at long last, the never before disclosed details about Hillary’s controversial Iraq War votes. No one in American history has ever had a life like this – First Lady, senator, and perhaps, president. Brilliantly reported, Her Way is essen-tial reading for anyone with an opinion about Hill-ary Rodham Clinton.

Zumba Music - The Secret Of Zumba’s SuccessBy: Melissa Marcketta

The essence or key to Zumba is truly the music and the single most important element of the class. An excellent Zumba class is one in which you “feel the music”. The dance steps and exercise moves are just a plus, but it would not be Zumba without the sizzling, toe tapping, hip swiveling music that makes you just want to get up and move! The music makes it Zumba. A “Zumba Basic” class is normally one hour long and usually is based on Latin rhythms. Our instructors at the Fitness Center add a lot of “hip hop” into their class as that is what many students request. The typical music format for a Zumba class consists of 2-3 warm-up songs, 7-10 songs for the actual workout and 1-2 cool down songs. These numbers will vary slightly depending on the length of each song an instruc-tor uses. Zumba® Fitness suggests their instructors use no more than a 70/30 ratio. In other words, 70% of Zumba music used in class should be Latin rhythms and the other 30% can be whatever type the instructor chooses. Most recently, Zumba® Fitness incorporated some other types of music into their program such as Belly Dance, Tango, Twist, Country and Rock ‘n Roll. Zumba Instructors can make up their own routines and can choose their own Zumba music. Many instruc-tors download songs from music download sites. How-ever, if instructors choose to be a part of ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network), Zumba music CDs and/or choreog-raphy CDs are sent to them every month. The CDs con-tain Zumba® Music they can use and the choreographed DVDs contain steps to each song.

Zumba classes are offered at the Sports & Fitness Center, Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays. Call 787-707-3767 and reserve your space!

It is a program designed to teach basic sports skills in a non-competitive environment, the major benefit is having the parents spend quality time with their child since parents have to be with the children during the Start Smart sessions. The program fo-cuses on teaching children basic sports mechan-ics without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Start Smart sessions become in-creasingly more difficult as the class progresses and the children show improvement.

Offers developmental programs and services for children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The SAS facilities located in building 148 Bailey Road, provides a secure environment where children are able to learn life skills, socialize with peers, do homework, attend the youth technology labs, participate in sports and fitness, talent shows and mentor younger children.

The SAS program has a team of qualified indi-viduals trained to work in an afterschool program. This month we would like to recognize three members of the SAS team for their commitment to the CYSS children and families:

Reflections on Golf by Jim DoulinAs we look forward to a great golfing year in 2010, we also reflect on 2009. During 2009 we completed many additions and improvements as well as suffered some challenges. The most visual projects were the renovation of the bunkers that Fort Buchanan richly deserved. We also completed the renovation of the Driving Range which is still maturing but a huge improvement. We were fortunate to be able to procure new maintenance equipment and service equipment. And we were able to accomplish the painting of the clubhouse and more. Our greens are improving and the focus this year is to continue to improve the condition of the greens.

Many other additions and improvements are expected during 2010. We are antici-pating the repairs to the cart paths, along with the arrival of our boom lift so we can get trees trimmed. We are expecting a new fleet of golf cars this year as well as some new maintenance equipment. There are many other happenings in 2010 including the return of the handicap system, a full tournament sched-ule, the return of a Golf Advisory Committee, and more renovations and course improvements. The Fort Buchanan staff looks forward to seeing everyone often this year and wishes all a healthy and happy 2010.

Why Golf?Golf is a stimulating challenge combined with nature, fresh air, pleasant surroundings and friends. Golf is not only a game but also an excellent way of exercising. For those that walk, an average round can involve walking approximately 6 kilometers. Even for those that ride a motorized golf car, the golf swing alone utilizes and stretches muscles often overlooked in workout routines. • Golf is a sport, a leisure sport, a game and a social event. • Golf can be play by people of all ages. At Fort Buchanan, you can routinely see golfers in their nineties playing and often walking. • Golf is suitable for all regardless of ability. Golf is a game where you play yourself, trying to better your scores, or just play for fitness and fun. A handicapping system allows golfers from all levels to compete equally. • Golf is a game you can play in groups or alone. • Golf offers a variety of events ranging from championships to social gatherings. Events can be focused on couples, teams, individuals. It can focus around other aspects such as holidays, celebrations, etc. • Golf can be a great stress reliever. After a tough day at work, many golfers come to the course to hit golf balls.

I try to remind golfers, especially beginners just taking up the sport, that Golf is a game and people play games for fun! If at some point, the game of golf becomes a chore and not enjoyable, I suggest you re-evaluate why we play golf. If we place to great of goals, we often become disappointed and fail to enjoy the game. When we do not enjoy the game, chances are those playing with us do not enjoy our company. One of the biggest misconceptions is that the normal is what we see on television. The golfers we see on television are the top 1% in the world. The average regular player scores approximately 100 and the overall average is well over 100. Most of us would never consider driving a car at 200 mph even though we see it on television. Why would we think we could drive a golf ball like the tour players? Play within our means, enjoy the game, enjoy the company and respect the game, the course and the players. Our staff at Fort Buchanan wants everyone to enjoy there visit to the golf course. If there is anything you need, please let one of our staff members know and we will do everything possible to help make your golfing experience a fun and enjoyable one.
