Prough Q&AForward Jeff Prough is in his third season with the Trenton Devils, having led the club in goals in each of his first two seasons in New Jersey’s capital city. The Farmington Hills, MI native joined the Devils after stints with the Florida Everblades and Gwinnett Gladiators, turning pro immediately following his four-season career at Brown University (ECAC) which culminated in 2008. The 5’10, 170-lb. forward was born on April 20, 1986.

Q: What was your favorite team growing up? Who was your favorite player?A: Well, I’m from Michigan, so I was a Detroit Red Wings, Steve Yzerman fan. My favorite non-hockey team was probably the Detroit Tigers.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?A: Since I was six-years-old, people have called me Zippy. When I was a kid, there was a radio personality in the Detroit-area named Jeff “Zippy” Crow and my last name Prough rhymes with Crow. So somebody started calling me Zippy way back then and all the way up through youth hockey and now as a professional, everybody still calls me Zippy. The only person who doesn’t call me Zippy is my mother. She has always refused.

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals?A: Yeah, lots of them. I always put my equipment on left to right, and I’m always the last person on the team to put my shoulder pads and jersey on. After warm-ups I always shoot the last puck into the net and take two laps around the ice, making sure to throw at least one puck into the crowd. Before games, I also go up into the bleachers all by myself with one of my sticks to just think about the game. These are just a few of the things I do, but my list of habits keeps growing.

Q: What is your favorite movie? Your favorite hockey movie?A: I’ll go with Goodfellas and Slap Shot.

Q: If you had to make your own dinner, what would you cook for yourself?A: Well, since coming to the Devils, I’ve gotten much better at cooking than I used to be, but my menu is still pretty short. Lasagna is probably the best thing I can make, so I’ll go with that.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: I think Kyle Kucharski said Thomas Jefferson and when I heard him say that, I thought I’d want to meet Thomas Jefferson also. The other two would be Warren Buffet and William O’Neil. Two good business guys there.

Q: Back from the holiday vacation, where did you go for the break?A: I went home to Michigan to see my family. It was good getting to see everybody, having a nice dinner and going to midnight mass with my mother and sister.

Hayes’ Hat Trick Hooks Walleye, 6-3Trenton, NJ - Led by a hat trick and four-point game from Ryan Hayes, six different Devils had multiple points as Trenton defeated Toledo, 6-3, December 19 at Sun National Bank Center.

The Devils’ six goals tied their largest offensive output of the season, though Trenton waited until the second period to jump-start the offense. J.S. Berube broke the ice for Trenton with a power play goal 1:32 into the second, the first of three power-play goals for Trenton in the game.

Berube’s opening score came off a centering feed from the right-wing corner. His attempted pass knocked off the leg of Walleye defenseman Kyle Page and past goaltender Jordan Pearce. Berube put Trenton ahead, 2-0, five minutes later, setup by Ryan Hayes and Brad Miller. Miller’s assist was his second of the contest, and Hayes’ extended his point-scoring streak to seven straight games on the play. The Walleye cut Trenton’s lead to 2-1, 24 seconds after Berube’s goal, with Mike Hedden electing to shoot while on a two-on-one rush with Evan Rankin, beating Dave Caruso with a short-side wrist shot.

While the Walleye inched to within 2-1, the momentum remained on the Devils’ side, with Trenton scoring two more second-period goals

to jump in front 4-1 after two periods. Both the 3-1 and 4-1 goals were scored on the power play, with Matt Lombardi rifling a shot past Jordan Pearce off a play started Brad Miller and Justin Pender at 9:25, and Ryan Hayes capitalizing at 18:28 with Justin Coutu and Dave Leaderer earning helpers.

Hayes scored his second goal and third point of the afternoon, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play with Ryan Ginand and J.S. Berube to give the Devils a four-goal bulge 1:24 into the third period. Randy Rowe and Evan Rankin each tallied to move the Walleye back to within a pair, but at 13:37, Hayes finished off his first professional hat trick with an end-to-end rush, giving the Devils a 6-3 lead.

While he was provided excellent offensive support, Dave Caruso was solid in goal, stopping 40 of 43 shots to earn his second consecutive win. Winners of two straight, Trenton is now 11-12-0-1 while the Walleye are now winless in three games, falling to 9-14-2-1. The Devils will not be in action until December 26, when they open up the post-Holiday Break schedule with the Reading Royals at 5:00 p.m.

#18 Ryan Hayes notched 4 points, including a hat trick, vs. Toledo.

Prior to the Royals’ early-season advantage in 2010-11 over the Devils, Trenton had led the all-time season series by going 54-37-12 against Reading prior to this season, not including Trenton’s 3-1 series victory over Reading in the second round of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Ryan Hayes followed Ginand’s hat trick with his first professional hat trick December 19 against the Toledo Walleye. Having extended his streak to seven consecutive games with a point by potting a goal and an assist in the first two periods against the Walleye, Hayes scored twice in the third period, capping off the Devils’ first six-goal outburst since October 17 with an end-to-end rush and goal past Jordan

Pearce with 6:23 remaining in the third period. The three-goal performances by the two Ryans,

Ginand and Hayes, are Trenton’s first hat tricks this season after Trenton players recorded five hat tricks last season. Last season Ginand, Jack Combs, Chris Poli and Matt Vokes recorded hat tricks, with first hat trick on February 21 against Wheeling coming as a four-goal effort.

Describing a player’s three-goal-in-one-game performance with the term “hat trick” dates all the way back to the 1940s. At the time, a junior team in Canada called the Guelph Indians was sold to the local Biltmore Hat Company and was renamed the Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters. When the Biltmore Hat Company began rewarding players on the Mad Hatters with a free hat of their player’s choosing from one of their local factories upon a player’s three-goal performance, the term “hat trick” was born.
