The three sports development schemes that I am going to be looking at are Swansea Civil service cricket club, UK sport and Swansea Council Swansea Civil Service Cricket Club is a local cricket club in Swansea and has a structure that uses committees. The committee consists of three people: a chairperson/captain who has overall leadership, a treasurer who looks after the financial affairs of the club and a secretary/youth organiser. In the clubs structure it is the secretary/youth organiser that carries out the administration work and also helps with all the communications. Committees make up most of the decisions for the schemes. The second sport development scheme I will be looking at is UK Sport. Uk sports’ structure is a working group, this type of structure are often where many organisations work in a partnership. They work by each partner sending representatives to work with the other group, As a result each organisation is kept up to date on how to achieve aims that have been set. Adams, Barker, Gledhill, Lyndon, Mulligan, phillippo, Sutton (2010) The organisations that Uk sport work with are the Sport Council for Wales, Sport Council for Scotland, Sport Council of Northern Ireland and the English Sports Council.

The role of the UK Sports will be to manage sports in the United Kingdom

International affairs.

Swansea Council is a Sports development provider that uses a structure similar to a

forum. These will be groups of people usually experts on the issues involved with

sport development. The forum will meet and discuss problems and will evaluate and

put forward a potential solution. The forum will not implement the changes but are

more of the brain boxes that come up with the ideas.

A forum will be made up of variety of people, including sports-development

volunteers and organisers, community leaders, coaches, PE teachers, Police and sports

development officers. Overleaf is an example of a forum.

Roles:

Providers: There are many different roles that are involved in sports development.

The first style of delivery is called enabling delivery. This type of delivery means the

provider responds to the participants needs by providing resources to give people the

opportunities they need to take part.

Another way to deliver is known as facilitating. This involves motivating and helpingparticipants so that by the end of the period they are able to look after themselves and

keep the schemes going without help from others.

Another type of delivery is called direct delivery. This is when sport development

schemes are run directly by professional sport developers such as those run by localauthority officers or coaches employed by large clubs.

Strategic delivery links into other, bigger scale plans and is sometimes called anintegrated approach. For example this would be a strategy that links back to healthyliving and working with aims of the Government. Adams, Barker, Gledhill, Lyndon,

An operational level program deals with concerns directly linked to peoples particular 

concerns, such as minority ethnic groups. Schemes linked like this will usually be

delivered locally but could be set up in more than one area at once. This particular 

type of program, is usually delivered to participants by professionals who have

knowledge of the local community. Adams, Barker, Gledhill, Lyndon, Mulligan,phillippo, Sutton (2010)

Participation: Sports-development organisations may have a role that focuses on the

participation level of the continuum by working on increasing the number of people

who are involved and partaking in sport. These schemes can work on increasing the

range of ages that participate in schemes, getting mixed abilities to participate and

also increase participation in sports for both genders. An example of this would beKwik Cricket and Dragon Sport. Adams, Barker, Gledhill, Lyndon, Mulligan,

Performance: When organisations are working at the higher range of the development

continuum a more specific approach is required. These approaches are known as

methods aimed at the “excellence” range of the continuum. Many organisations will

work together to try and develop talent for example with the London 2012 Olympicsapproaching organisations such as UK Sport, The English Institute of Sport and The

British Olympic Association will work together to develop potential athletes inpreparation for the event and future events. An example of an athlete would be Tom

Daley who entered the 2008 Olympics for the first time as a teenager.

Sport-development officers are used in the forum, they are professional and qualifiedindividuals who help work with local clubs.

They have to be able to manage budgets, participants and plan sessions. There arethree main groups that a sports-development officer can be classified as:

Sport specific: This type of officer specialises in one sport and is employed to focus

one the development of their chosen sport.

Non sport specific: This type of officer is the most versatile due to the fact they will

work with different groups and run different activities and are usually situated in local

areas and schools.

Community: This type of officer will be working with a wide range of age groups ad

a mixture of abilities.

The final role of sport-development schemes is volunteers. This is the biggest role as

it includes everybody who gives their free time up to support and work with sport

clubs. In the United Kingdom there are thousands of individuals who work with

amateurs and young children (CRB checked are needed if working with children).

Many volunteers face problems such as needing to gain qualifications to coach and

also hiring safe suitable environment to participate in their specific sport, which all

adds up and requires finances. Even with these financial issues they still manage to
