What is heart disease?Heart disease is the biggest cause of death in MEDCs. It kills nearly half of all men and women. One on four men will have a heart attack before retirement age and most teenagers show signs of narrowing of blood vessels, which is the start of heart disease.

But heart disease is non-infectious. One person cannot infect another.

Why does it still exist in any country?!

What is heart disease?

Heart disease is a Cardiovascular disease• There is a deposition of fats

such as cholesterol in the blood vessels

• This causes a narrowing of the blood vessel which results in high blood pressure and a high risk of ischaemia causing under perfusion of organs

Page 4: DEVELOPMENT & HEALTH What do all of these things have in common?

DEVELOPMENT & HEALTHIs heart disease reversible?Heart disease is irreversible.• Cardiac tissue is non-

regenerative, once its damage/died then its gone.

• Complicated heart diseases lead to further complications that need expensive treatment

• All risk factors that caused first attack still present and obviously volatile. This all leads to a

heart attack!

CAUSES of heart disease

Fatty DietToo many fatty foods increases Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the blood. This narrows the arteries, increasing the chance of heart disease. Fatty foods also lead to people becoming obese or overweight, which puts an extra strain on the heart.

Lack of ExerciseLack of exercise raise the blood pressure and cholesterol.

It can lead to people becoming overweight which puts additional strain on the heart,

SmokingNicotine increases your heart rate and blood pressure.

A higher heart rate and blood pressure means that the heart has to work harder and require more oxygen. Smokers lose oxygen while smoking, putting the heart under extra strain. A packet of cigarettes a day doubles the chance of having a heart attack and makes you five times as likely to have a stroke.

InheritancePeople can inherit high blood pressure ad high cholesterol

People can inherit this from their parents. This will make them more likely to suffer from a heart attack

StressStress increases a person’s blood pressure.

High blood pressure puts extra pressure on the heart. Also, people under stress often indulge in ‘comfort eating’ and consume chocolate bars or greasy chips which can also cause heart disease.

In what way does stress increase your chances of heart disease?

Look at the pictograph (figure 66.1). What percentage of people in the UK dies from:• Heart disease:• Cancer:

Look at the pictograph (figure 66.2). What is the death-rate from heart disease in in:• Belarus:• Russia:

Figure 66.3 and Figure 66.4 show the consequences of heart disease to the UK.• Take two items in Figure 66.3 and describe the health care costs involve.• Using Figure 66.4, explain why the total cost of heart disease is much greater than

the health care cost

Look at Figure 66.5.

Draw a pictograph to show the death-rate from heart disease for men and women for men and women in Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire, Dundee City and Perthshire and Kinross.
