Introduction to Development Courses

Beginning in January, 2017, all members, guests and attendees are invited to join in the initial offerings

of our new Development Courses at CCC. Subject matter for each class has been specifically identified to help develop faith in, and knowledge of, our Lord

and Savior. The format will be presented in four quarters through the year; six different classes will be offered each quarter, and class attendees will have

an opportunity to learn from different instructors, meet new people in the different classes, and enjoy a

variety of Biblically-based subject matter. Philippians 1:9- And it is my prayer that your love

may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment...

Our current Sunday School teachers have embraced this vision, and all of them have informative courses planned. This initiative is part of our Care, Connect and Challenge mission, making disciples who make disciples, and is consistent with the Micro Church program which is designed to encourage and challenge believers to live out their faith and share the Good News.

1 Peter 3:15- always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.

Heart of why you teach

Rod Price –A long time ago when I felt God calling me into ministry, I wanted to help people to overcome their problems. We, as a church, need to be there for all to help in any way we can and sometimes it starts with simple training. We need, as the body of Christ, to stand

up and work together to show the light in us to the world. Keith Schoettmer - I've been teaching Sunday School at Cicero Christian Church for over 9 years. I love the challenge of keeping class interesting and sharing God's word with other Christians, regardless of where they are in their walk. I firmly believe that the only way we can

truly appreciate and understand the heart of Christ is to dive into His word with regular, disciplined study.

Jim Doyle: I have a passion for developing people, particularly in discipleship and mentoring. I was a certified trainer of Situational Self Leadership for Ken Blanchard (One Minute Manager) Training & Development, and have developed and led numerous Bible studies, lectures and sermons. Kathy and I worked in a ministry

partnership for over forty years with Cursillo, Tres Dias, Great Banquet, Walk to Emmaus and other discipleship kickoff ministries to fulfill a call to build the church up for works of service. And...I love to teach.

Tom Strauss - I feel that God has placed in my heart a passion for financial issues. Since becoming a Christian in 1998, I’ve been seeking God’s will for my own finances. I feel He has used the circumstances in my life to give me something unique to share. To me, it’s only natural that I would share what I’ve

learned. The Bible contains over 2,000 verses that deal with money and possessions. There’s a reason He talks about it so much: many people, including Christians, struggle with their finances. God knew this would be true, and said that “no one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24, NASB). But most of us don’t realize the importance He places on this area of our lives. My passion is to help change that.

Steven Hancock - I teach in order to help people follow Jesus joyfully, passionately and full-throttle.

Mike Jenkins - I believe that God has extended to me the spiritual gift of teaching for the purposes stated in (Eph 4:11-12 & 1 Cor 12:28). I have always found preparing to teach a lesson allows me to increase my knowledge and understanding, and I consider that a blessing. My goal in teaching Sunday school is to Glorify God, impart

knowledge, and require accountability for what has been taught.

Gino Small - The words of Paul in Romans 1 describes for me the reason I take time to facilitate in a classroom setting. Romans 1:11-12, “ I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”

Debbie Reeves - The Bible is a touchstone for my life. I am an English teacher, and when I first chose my life’s occupation, I wanted to be used of God to serve people. Long ago, I decided that the Bible is the only literature that I will not argue with—even when it contains hard truths--because I accept it as the inspired word of God. The

best thing I have to offer others in the church is help in reading it for themselves and letting the Holy Spirit be their teacher. I do not presume that I have wisdom to share; the wisdom is in the Bible itself, as well as very personal messages from God meant for individuals in a particular situation at a given time. I want to show people how to approach the Bible in responsible and thorough study so that the Holy Spirit can impart those messages to them.

Cultivating Friendship in Marriage

Led by: Rod & Burlene Price 9a-first service in room 133 Summary of the Class

We will be studying from the book House or Home? God’s Blueprint for a Great Marriage. Our heart’s desire in America is that 97% want a close-knit family, but our current situation is that families are disintegrating. The Christian family is in demise. The primary cause of this is our failure to hold marriage and marriage commitments in high esteem. God’s instructions for a great marriage are in Ephesians 5:22-33, “vs. 22-23 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church….vs. 32-33 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.” We will discover more together. Course Costs Scholarships are Available

Winter Quarter January 8-March 26 Matthew’s Gospel Led by: Keith Schoettmer & Jim Doyle 9a-first service in room 107

Summary of the Class

The book of Matthew is a Gospel that contains Narrative History, Genealogy, Parables, Sermons, and some Prophetic Oracles. It was written by Matthew (Levi), the Disciple of Christ around 48-50 A.D. The key word in Matthew is "Kingdom" and is used 28 times.

The personalities of this book include the Messiah Jesus Christ, His parents Mary and Joseph, the Twelve Disciples, the prophet John the Baptist, and other kinds of leaders. These leaders include those in government like Pilate and religious leaders such as the Pharisees (who attempt to hinder the work of Jesus).

The book of Matthew is the first of the synoptic gospels and it was written to reveal the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, the King of the Jews, from the line of David. It also was written to convince the Jews that Jesus Christ was indeed their long-awaited Messiah.

Class style will be a discussion format where we can learn from each other. We will spend considerable time discerning how the Word applies to us today in our life situations. All will be invited to participate, but we will be sensitive to those who may be uncomfortable sharing their views.

Winter Quarter January 8-March 26 In the Beginning: Genesis Led by: Steven Hancock 10:30a - second service in room 133

Summary of the Class

The genre of Genesis is a Narrative History, and Genealogies. It was written by Moses about 1450-1410 B.C. Key personalities include Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Joseph. This book was written to record God’s creation of the world and to demonstrate His love for all that He created.

Genesis is the first book of the Law and also the first book of the entire Bible. The name Genesis literally means “In the Beginning”. It explains the actual events of one of the most debated subjects of our current day...the origin of life. Genesis describes the Lord God, who is infinite and all-powerful, creating everything that exists, by the power of His spoken Word, out of nothing. He essentially creates material matter out of non-material nothing.

Winter Quarter January 8-March 26 Biblical Wisdom: Proverbs Led by: Debbie Reeves 10:30a - second service in room 121

Summary of the Class

My aim is to teach an inductive method for approaching the Bible that can open up the text and allow people to gain an accurate understanding of the passages they study, and allow the Holy Spirit to bring their attention to what God wants them to apply from those passages. Context is KEY!!! Every verse must be read in the context of the chapter it is in, each chapter in the context of the book, each book in the context of the Bible as a whole. An inductive Bible study looks at the evidence that is there and draws conclusions from that textual evidence, using questions (who-what-when-where-why-how-so what?), patterns (repeated words, phrases, and synonyms), and cultural or author information as needed to illuminate the comparisons and circumstances in the text. Always, any conclusion drawn must be consistent with the context and the Bible as a whole. With every passage, the progression is from basic comprehension to deeper understanding to personal application.

Materials Needed

Bible (a study Bible can be helpful—that you are willing to write in and mark), Notebook (or technology for making lists and taking notes) & Index cards

(useful as a bookmark for remembering repeated words or phrases to mark in

the text), Highlighters, colored pencils, pens, or pencil (you may

want the scrapbook type that does not bleed and fade on the page over time)

The Early Church: Acts

Led by: Keith Schoettmer & Jim Doyle 9a – first service in room 207

Summary of the Class

Acts is Luke’s sequel to the Gospel of Luke. It is titled "Acts" to emphasize that this book records the "Acts of the Apostles through the work of the Holy Spirit". The key personalities of Acts are Peter, Paul, John, James, Stephen, Barnabas, Timothy, Lydia, Silas, and Apollos.

Luke wrote the book of Acts (Acts of the Apostles) to record how believers were empowered by the Holy Spirit, worked to spread the Gospel of Christ, and are a model for the future church.

The book of Acts is also the history of the birth, the founding, and the spread of the Church from Jerusalem to Rome. It also records the transition of the Church from being almost exclusively a Jewish institution into becoming a Gentile and an international institution. Consequently, it records the transition of Christianity from a Jewish religion into an international faith. The Gospel of salvation is for all because Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

Class style will be a discussion format where we can learn from each other. We will spend considerable time discerning how the Word applies to us today in our life situations. All will be invited to participate, but we will be sensitive to those who may be uncomfortable sharing their views.

A Survey of the Gospels

Led by: Rod Price 10:30a –second service in room 122

Summary of the Class

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are known to us, according to ancient Christian tradition, as the four Gospels. As Mark 1:14 states, “…Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel (good news) of God.” The term, however, soon came to be used of the four accounts of the life of Jesus, probably due to its presence in the opening verse of Mark’s gospel?: “The beginning of the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

One thing is immediately striking about the four Gospels. Three of them have a substantial amount of material in common. The Gospels for Matthew, Mark and Luke frequently share the same accounts and, as you shall see, often use exactly the same words. For this reason, most readers find it very difficult to remember in which Gospel a particular incident is narrated. Because they share much in common, the Gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke are sometimes referred to as the Synoptic Gospels; the word synoptic comes for the Greek term sunopsis meaning “seeing together.” John’s Gospel stands out as the black sheep of the family, lacking the family characteristics found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Resting in God: Psalms

Led by: Debbie Reeves 10:30a –second service in room 121 Summary of the Class

Context is KEY!!! Every verse must be read in the context of the chapter it is in, each chapter in the context of the book, each book in the context of the Bible as a whole. Spring Quarter April 9-June 22 Trials: Ecclesiastes Led by: Mike Jenkins 10:30a –second service in room 107 Summary of the Class

The book of Ecclesiastes contains Proverbs, maxims, sayings, and is largely an autobiographical story. Solomon wrote it late in his life, approximately 935 B.C. He had become aware of the mistakes that he made throughout his life and began to document them. The purpose of Ecclesiastes is to spare future generations the suffering and misery of seeking after foolish, meaningless, materialistic emptiness, and to offer wisdom by discovering truth in seeking after God.

It appears that Solomon once again, wants to teach the reader wisdom, “I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with” (1:13).
