Background

• Alcohol popular among Thai

• There are a third of Asia's population that drink meanwhile a fifth of the world does

• The Northern region is the region with the highest number of alcohol drinkers in Thailand

• 2004 ; The Ministry of Health found that Nan, drinking alcohol is number one of the country.

Background

• Traffic accident injuries from controversy during the festival, which is caused by alcohol is increasing every year.

• 2006;Nan Health Assembly resolution has announced the customary non-alcohol campaign in Nan.

• 2013; Nan found the new drinker a fourth of Thailand.

Background of Wang Wa Community, Nan

• 332 families , 1079 population , all of them are Buddhist • 66.25 percent of people in village consumes alcohol • 98.5 percent of family survey drank alcohol. • Most labour workers drank alcohol after work or during

the day in the agriculture or construction • The money spent on the alcohol 60 dollars per month.

Background of Wang Wa Community, Nan

• 97 percent have economic problems, • 104 persons had mental problems, family problems, and

stress. • 16 persons are chronic alcoholics and some of them are

alcoholism. • There are reports of a quarrel and mayhem in family. • End of 2010 they had the serious trauma situation 2 girls in

community had accident and died due to alcohol

Objective

• To study the development community participation to stop alcohol in Wang Wa Community

Methods

• The participatory action research between 2011– 2014

• The sample was composed 45 steak holders 215 drinkers and 68 teenage

• The instruments for data collection was Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT]

Methods

• The research had 3 phase ; 1) Pre - Research Phase for prepare the researcher, analyze

community, improve cooperation of researcher and community.

2) The Research Phase , the participation technique was done in 4 steps : planning, practice, observation & reflex on problem until the community were stop alcohol

funeral / agriculture - The alcohol-free zone. - The store will not sell

alcohol on the Buddhist holy day

The result

• The policy in community were no alcohol in the funeral , agriculture and limited time of party.

• 3 shops didn’t sell alcohol and all of them not sell alcohol on the Buddhist holy day [4 times / month]

• Safety zone for alcohol and a new anti-drinker

• 96 percent success stop drink during Buddhist Lent 2014 and 33.48 percent continuity

The result

• 5 chronic alcoholics able to stop alcohol.

• 12 persons are now role models of being able to stop drinking

• No event of accident cause from alcohol in community.

• No quarrel or mayhem in family.

• 95 percent satisfaction.

Conclusions

• Abstain from alcohol promotion in the community require cooperation from community leaders to design activities lead to the participation and sustainability
