A few years ago, President Barron challenged each College to begin developing transformative ideas that would not only shape the future of our University, but also profoundly and positively impact future graduates and the communities and professions they will serve.

Faculty, staff, alumni and donors like you have spent the last two years rigorously drafting and revising a Strategic Plan full of bold ideas and initiatives, developing a Strategic Development Plan to align with these initiatives and reestablishing the College’s volunteer leadership organizations.

On the following pages, we briefly outline each of the initiatives that have been proposed – innovative opportunities that cut across the boundaries of individual departments and colleges – that will allow the College of Education to develop and share new knowledge and improve the quality of education in our state, nation and world.

Florida State University is at a critical juncture. Working together we can propel this University to greater heights – and the transformative power of bold ideas can make this happen.

If you are passionate about one or more of these ideas and want to build a positive, personal legacy at FSU, I invite you to join our efforts. Thank you for taking the time to read about our aspirations to revolutionize the field of Education.

All My Best,

The Florida State University College of Education is more than a place where classes are taught, research is conducted or sports are played; instead, it is a rare academic environment where individuals are cultivated in mind, body and spirit. Students leave these halls with the professional skills and strength of character to lead.

Since its official organization in 1905, The Florida State University College of Education has provided students with the resources and opportunities necessary to become educational leaders who value life-long learning. You will find that the College of Education is a leader in teacher training and educational research, and we are working to improve teaching and learning, both within the State of Florida and around the world. Our award-winning faculty are recognized experts in their fields, and we are proud to have them serve as resources for our students.

We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 40 programs; preparing teachers, administrators, researchers, policymakers and a variety of human service practitioners for

a wide range of educational careers in government, private and public settings. Students work with faculty to improve all facets of education throughout Florida, the nation, and the world, with a foundation of strong academic preparation and extensive hands-on experience. The College prides itself on training a new generation of educational leaders with vision, innovation, and energy to spark the creativity present in every learner.

As a result of our quality programs, research activity and award-winning faculty, the College is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. In addition, the latest Survey of Earned Doctorates places the College in the top 20 colleges of education for number of doctoral degrees awarded.

As university budgets have tightened, the need to obtain external funds to support faculty research activities has become crucial. With your help, the College of Education can continue to uphold these standards of excellence and look toward a bright future in education.

3Innovative Funding Priority to Transform EducaTion across ThE GlobE

With your generous financial support, the College of Education will be a leader in preparing global-ready graduates who possess the intercultural skills, knowledge and know-how needed to succeed in the 21st century. In the process, we will establish Florida State as a student-centered, globally engaged, world-renowned research institution.

We will celebrate the international character of our College and University by enhancing intercultural awareness and appreciation through forums, workshops and seminars. Additionally, the College will reward and recognize faculty who integrate international issues into their classroom activities, establish a global advising program, and enhance collaborative global research.

The College also hopes to provide need-based assistance for at least 15 students each year to expand their world-wide educational experiences. These will include travel abroad for internships, service projects, and participation in study abroad and exchange programs.

Finally, the College plans to enhance the global engagement of faculty and students by establishing an Office of International Outreach. With your support, this office will assess and build upon the current areas of international work within our College, and oversee all the above transformative global initiatives.

Make a gift today and be a part of a bold and transformative global initiative that will shape the future of Florida State for generations to come.

With your generous financial support, the College of Education will inspire positive change in the field of education. Our goal is to transfer proactive research at the University into effective local, state, and national public policy to ensure that the discipline’s best interests and values are upheld in the decision-making process.

To support this goal, the College will create an Education Data Center—a collaborative research center whose primary function is to examine, evaluate, and assess education related data collected by the State of Florida. The Center will share its research findings with policy makers, in-turn stimulating progressive strides in education.

The Center will carry out the College’s mission by offering support, resources and opportunities for enrichment to Florida State University faculty and students, as well as the Tallahassee community and school districts. With your assistance, the Education Data Center will also provide substantial opportunities for named centers, professorships, graduate fellowships, and scholarships.

Make a gift today and be a part of a bold and transformative statewide initiative that will inspire positive change in the field of education.

Achieving a high-quality education is often out of reach for at-risk, high-poverty, and minority students due to the number of discouraging barriers facing these individuals. These challenges are not solely academic and often include environmental, social and/or cultural factors. With your generous financial support, the College of Education hopes to open an Educational Intervention Center to provide a much-needed community resource, service-learning site and research facility in an effort to minimize these challenges. The Center will provide the ideal environment for teacher education students to tutor K-12 students in literacy skills including reading, writing, and the effective use of 21st century media. Furthermore,

the Center will provide the appropriate setting and resources to foster mentorship programs for at-risk students.

Acquiring the funding for this project will allow the Education Intervention Center to flourish and reach its full potential—primarily drawing upon the strengths of teacher education and counselor education faculty, while also incorporating diverse expertise from colleges such as Social Work, Medicine, Communication & Information, Business, and Human Sciences.

Make a gift today, and be a part of something bold and transformative that will shape the future of underserved children for generations to come.

The College of Education strives to use the latest, cutting-edge technology and multimedia devices to enhance teaching and facilitate learning. To meet this goal, the College must address the ever-present changes in technology and become leaders in the movement to expand the integration of advanced technologies into the curriculum.

With your generous financial support, we intend to upgrade the hardware and software on college-wide multimedia devices, as well as to create a technology “sandbox” where students, faculty, and members of the academic community can sample the latest educational technology in a variety of fields. Staying current with the latest developments in technology is imperative to their integration into teaching and learning.

Additionally, we hope to host an annual college-wide technology showcase by faculty and students to demonstrate this integration. We strongly believe these new and emerging technologies and innovative teaching strategies will provide superior professional development for faculty, teacher assistants, and staff.

Make a gift today, and be apart of something bold and transformative that will enhance teaching and learning across our curriculum.

Florida State University Schools (FSUS) is an “A” grade school that has recently been honored for having the best third grade class in the state of Florida. As a developmental research charter school operated by The Florida State University, the administrative oversight of FSUS is conducted by the College of Education. It is our goal to provide even better opportunities and resources to help serve these students and expand research partnerships. With this in mind, we mean to include a student wellness center, a performing arts center, and to expand the current multimedia resource center.

Additionally, it is likely that some state funding will be available in the coming years to assist with the performing arts center construction and media center expansion. These funds may cover the actual

construction of the facilities, however private donors will be the driving force that will help the school create truly exceptional arts and media facilities at FSUS. Private funding will be essential in the construction of a student wellness center. This facility would serve as the hub for health and physical education on campus and provide adequate facilities for student athletic training. It would also allow for collaborative research projects in areas such as exercise science, nutrition, child development and medicine with a particular focus on child wellbeing as it relates to successful longevity.

The College of Education is proud to offer more scholarship awards than any other college at FSU. The College plans to enhance current awards by increasing student research scholarships and fellowships to help high achieving students have access to the education they deserve. Additionally, we plan to secure funding to offer fellowship and scholarship opportunities that are program specific to the recruitment of international and diverse students, and to be more competitive with peer institutions in graduate student recruitment.

Faculty support

Thanks to award-winning faculty, the College of Education is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. We take pride in our recruitment of faculty members who are passionate about education and committed to the improvement of the discipline. Our faculty members engage in collaborative research and partnerships that support the dynamic needs of a global and diverse society, and they are fundamental in our quest to produce graduates who thrive in the field. We aim to attract faculty with endowed professorships and chairs

Additionally, the College boasts a diverse, experienced and knowledgeable faculty base. We hope to be able to recognize their effective teaching with awards and endowed stipends.
