• The overall idea of the project is to realize zero emission propulsion systems for longer crossings / operation time and larger vessels in hybrid configurations based on battery and hydrogen technology.

• Based on this knowledge base we shall outline and specify a pilot project for a hybrid (hydrogen/battery powered) ferry.

• Rebuild an existing car ferry and tested by the end of Q4/2020 as the first car ferry in commercial operation in the world.

• Both DNV GL and Norwegian Maritime Authority are partners in the project in order to take care of the approval process.

• This is meant to be a win-win situation both for the regulating authorities as well as for us ensuring its pioneering function.

• Lack of regulations - under development. These are time-consuming processes (establishment of regulations for LNG took 8 years).

• Dialogue between the Norwegian Maritime Directorate (and IMO), DNV GL, DSB, R&D organization's and Standards Norway.

• Qualification of fuel cells for marine applications (MW size).• Availability and infrastructure of hydrogen as a fuel (compressed

gas / liquid. An important challenge that governments and politicians must have full focus on.

• Solutions for bunkering and storing hydrogen on board the vessels• High costs for hydrogen and hydrogen technology at an early stage.
