RE: Statement of Ka 'Ohana 0 KalaePresented As Testimony at May 16, 1985Public Informational Meeting on theProposed Pahala Geothermal Resource Subzone
Dear Mr. Tagomori and Staff:
Ka 'Ohana 0 Kalae is a grassroots organization that has beensuccessful in their curatorship program of site preservation andperpetuation at South Point, a National Historic Landmark.
Our organization is comprised of our families, fellowHawaiians, and friends. We are representative of the mana'o ofthe Native practitioners, those who practice and live the Nativeculture of Hawai'i.
Our purpose is to protect and perpetuate this c ul ture whichis founded upon interaction with our living environment, whichhas been perpetuated and ongoing for thousands of years.
To even consider geothermal development is in violation ofthe tenets of the religious practices to Pe Le , Your agency hasno right to proceed any further until further work and study hasbeen made in the Native Hawaiian communities.
Ka 'Ohana 0 Kalae demands that a sensitive, in-depthcultural impact study be made of the Pele people and theirbeliefs and practices of Pele.
We expect further consultation with your office on thislila tt er •
