Deut. 5:3, Seventh Day Adventist’s The Clear Word Bible, thebereancall.org

• “Question: Some Seventh day Adventist friends have what they call "The Clear Word Bible." Something doesn't sound quite right, and it looks like verses have been changed to support their teachings.

Response: We would agree with your concerns about the Clear Word Bible. One doesn't have to go through much of this version to determine that words have been added or meanings changed in order to "more clearly" support their particular teachings.

• For example, Deuteronomy 5:3 in the KJV reads, "The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day." In this passage, Moses is stating that the Sabbath Day was given by God to a named people (the Jews) as part of the Mosaic Law. This verse reads the same in all alternate translations that we consulted (NIV, NASB, ESV, NLT, etc.).

• The same verse from the SDA paraphrase (the Clear Word Bible) reads, "It wasn't only with our ancestors that He made a covenant, but with us and with all who are alive today." It is clear to see that the meaning of the passage has been…

Deut. 5:3, Seventh Day Adventist’s The Clear Word Bible, thebereancall.org

• changed. There is a reason. Many SDAs believe that those who came before--Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the patriarchs--all kept the Sabbath. So, Jack Blanco, who produced the Clear Word Bible, changed "not with our fathers" [did He make a covenant] to "It wasn't only with our ancestors that He made a covenant...." This is clearly wresting the Word of God.

• Consider Exodus 5:5: "And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens" (KJV).

• The Clear Word Bible: "You've created enough problems by making them rest every week on your Sabbath...." Pharaoh is made to be complaining about the Jews keeping the Sabbath prior to the Law! In truth, this passage says nothing about keeping the Sabbath, and this twisting of Scriptures removes the meaning from this passage of Holy Scripture. From the context, it is clear that Pharaoh is the one adding to the burden of the Jews.

• SDAs have historically gone through a "purging" process every few decades or so. The last major one was in the 1980s, when many theologians, pastors, and members left when Ellen G. White's plagiarism was highlighted and the governing body nonetheless issued the…

• directive to recognize the "spirit of prophecy" (i.e., Ellen G. White's status as a prophet) and submit.

• In SDA President Ted Wilson's inaugural sermon he chastized those who don't emphasize the Sabbath and those who speak against "the spirit of prophecy." In his address "Go Forward" (General Conference Sabbath Sermon from July 3, 2010), he emphasized the "correct way" to interpret Scriptures: "hold your leaders, pastors, local churches, educators, [et al.] accountable to the highest standards of belief based on a literal understanding of Scripture. Utilize wonderful resources such as the Biblical Research Institute's new book on hermeneutics that helps us know the correct way to interpret the Scriptures."

• Again we read in Selected Messages, Book 1 (by Ellen G. White), on p. 170, "Do not overstrain the meaning of sentences in the Bible in an effort to bring forth something odd in order to please the fancy. Take the Scriptures as they read."

• The irony of this is that many SDA doctrines, such as the Investigative Judgment, do not take the Scriptures as they are read. With the "Clear Word" Bible, there has been some "wresting" that slants the verses in this paraphrase towards particular doctrines of SDAs.”

Sandy Y., Bowmansville, Pennsylvania tells that, “One night our family was doing a devotional that included the story of the Ten Commandments. My husband asked, "How many commandments did God give to Moses?“ Seth, our 5-year-old son, quickly replied,

"Too many!”

Actually, it was 613.

Deuteronomy 5:7, Put God First

• We were not created to glorify the Sabbath, the Sabbath was created to bless us.

• NAU Mark 2:28 "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

• Jesus is not only a man, He is Deity, He created the Sabbath and so is LORD of it.

• Henry Ward Beecher said, “A world without a Sabbath would be like a man without a smile, like a summer without flowers, and like a homestead without a garden. It is the most joyous day of the whole week.”

NAU Deuteronomy 5:12 'Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as

the LORD your God commanded you.

SABBATHS (PLURAL) IN THE BIBLEBob Jones www.BibleFood.com

• “…B) [Mt 28:1]: "After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.” …

• After but the Sabbath [pl] at [the] dawning ..........toward the first• day of the week ........came ...Mary ....the Magdalene..."• There are two occurrences of "sabbaton" in this verse. The first use of

"sabbaton" is in the genitive plural and occurs in the phrase "after the sabbaths" which refers to a point in time "after the sabbaths" - referring to more than one sabbath. This phrase is then followed by and paralleled with "toward the first day of the week" where 'week' = 'sabbaton', genitive plural.

• Considering the word rendered "first" which modifies the second "sabbaton", genitive plural; we must conclude that this second 'sabbaton' refers to a "week", or period of seven days.

• This proves that there was more than one "Sabbath" during the week Jesus was crucified…”

Deuteronomy 5:12, Sabbaths, Festivals, or New Moons?

• NAU Deuteronomy 5:12 'Observe the sabbath day…• God commanded more than 64 sabbath days per year. Same “cut

off” punishment for all of them. We need to praise God for sending Jesus who kept them all perfectly for us so we don’t have to be “cut off”.

• NAU Galatians 4:9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.

• NAU Colossians 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Leviticus 25:4, Sabbath Year• NAU Leviticus 25:4 but during the seventh year the

land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD…

• Sabbath does not mean Saturday or Sunday!• God commanded over 60 Sabbaths per year.• ת 07676  shabbath {shab-bawth'} ַׁשָּב• Meaning:  1) Sabbath 1a) sabbath 1b) day of atonement 1c) sabbath year 1d) week 1e) produce (in sabbath year) …

Ministry Of Death Engraved On Stones

• Let’s read 2 Corinthians 3:2-11• NAU 2 Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministry of death, in letters

engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was,

• NET 2 Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministry that produced death– carved in letters on stone tablets– came with glory, so that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on the face of Moses because of the glory of his face (a glory which was made ineffective),

• NAU Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

Deuteronomy 5:16God wants us to honor Him

• NAU Deuteronomy 5:16 'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you.

• NAU Malachi 1:6 "'A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?' says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, 'How have we despised Your name?’

• NAU Deuteronomy 21:18 "If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, 19 then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. 20 "They shall say to the elders of his city, 'This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.' 21 "Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear.

Leviticus 19:3, Honor Father And Mother

• Leviticus 19:3 'Every one of you shall reverence his mother and his father, and you shall keep My sabbaths; I am the LORD your God.

• Ephesians 6:2 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),

• (Deut. 5:16, Matt. 15:4-6, 19:19, Mk. 7:10, 10:19, Lk. 18:20)

Deuteronomy 5:16, 21:18-21, 22:20-21, 22, Law of Moses or Law of Christ?

• You can praise God that we are not under the Law of Moses but under the Law of Christ.• NAU Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens,

and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.• I like what Chuck Smith once said (paraphrased); “If we

were under the Law of Moses, there would be a lot more parking spaces available at the beach.”

Deuteronomy 5:16, 6:6-7, Children, Obey Your Parents

• Good Morning Lord, QUESTION FOR THE DAY, from Compass answered a question concerning three disrespectful children ages 16, 18 and 20, with; “…You must take control of your children. Consider taking some consistent, quality time to do Bible study with your children. You could begin by asking for their forgiveness for not teaching them Scripture like you should have. Start with the basics, even if you think they know them. Then concentrate on verses where God says He expects them to do what He says regardless of their feelings or what the world believes. Naturally you would want to eventually study the verses on authority like:

• Obey your leaders, and submit to them; — Hebrews 13:17 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. — Ephesians 6:1…” [full page is after “THE END” slide]

Deuteronomy 5:17, Divorce VS Murder

Exodus 20:13 "You shall not murder.

A respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, 'I would like to buy some cyanide.'

The pharmacist asked, 'Why in the world do you need cyanide?'

The lady replied, 'I need it to poison my husband.'

The pharmacist's eyes got big and he exclaimed, 'Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband. That's against the law! I'll lose my licence! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!'

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, 'Well now, that's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription.'

Deuteronomy 5:18, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE BIBLE• Some Christians give others the idea that Christianity is a

dull and joyless faith, and that God is stern and humorless. But God is the One Who created humor.

• For example, did you ever hear of the Bug Bible? Published in 1551, the Bug Bible got the name when, for some unexplainable reason, “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night” from Psalm 91:5 was printed as, “Thou shalt not be afraid of any buggies by night.” Human error was also presumably responsible for The Wicked Bible, published in 1717. The Wicked Bible got its name because the word “not” was left out of one of the Commandments, leaving the Commandment to …

Deuteronomy 5:18, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE BIBLE• read, “Thou shalt commit adultery.”• One of the most amusing word plays was by Jesus Himself

and is found in Matthew 23:24. Here Jesus warns hypocrites about straining at gnats and swallowing camels. In Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, the word for gnat is nearly identical to the word for camel. The verbal humor, which is an excellent way of teaching, produced a simple slogan that was easy for the common man to remember: “Blind guides, who strain out a galma, and swallow a gamla!”

• Despite occasional human printing errors, we can be sure that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. And despite God’s sincere earnestness in calling us to Himself, we can also be sure that He created humor.

• NAU Proverbs 19:16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of conduct will die.

• Mark Bricklin has said, “Be aware that most people are operating on a very condensed version of the Ten Commandments: the part about murder.”

OLDEST TEN COMMANDMENTS ON DISPLAY IN JERUSALEM, (Arutz Sheva News)

• World's oldest complete example of the Biblical text on display at the Israel Museum as part of special exhibit.

• The oldest complete example of the Ten Commandments has gone on rare display in Jerusalem, part of the Israel Museum's collection of the Dead Sea scrolls… Written in Hebrew more than 2,000 years ago, it is one of 870 scrolls discovered between 1947 and 1956 in the Qumran caves above the Dead Sea."It's not usually exhibited... because it's very sensitive and fragile," a museum official told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that it was being displayed in a climate-controlled glass case. When not on show, the scrolls are kept in a dark, climate-controlled storeroom in conditions similar to those in the Qumran caves, where the humidity, temperature and darkness preserved them for two millennia. The Ten Commandments scroll is part of "A Brief History of Humankind," a unique exhibition on human development drawn from the museum's collections that includes the original handwritten manuscript of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. The scroll, which measures 18 by 2.7 inches (46 x 8 cm), has been displayed in the past in the United States. The museum said that owing to its fragility it would be on display for "up to four weeks, after which an exact facsimile will be on display.” The Brief History of Humankind exhibition, part of the museum's 50th anniversary celebrations, runs until January 2, 2016.

• Question: Some Seventh day Adventist friends have what they call "The Clear Word Bible." Something doesn't sound quite right, and it looks like verses have been changed to support their teachings.

It is clear to see that the meaning of the passage has been changed.

• SDAs have historically gone through a "purging" process every few decades or so. The last major one was in the 1980s, when many theologians, pastors, and members left when Ellen G. Ephesians 6:1 Deuteronomy 5:16 Deuteronomy 6:6-7 Proverbs 29:15 Hebrews 13:17, Children, Obey Your Parents

• QUESTION FOR THE DAY• Dear Compass,• We have three children ages 16, 18 and 20. One is in college and the other two are a sophomore and senior in high school. It is so easy to give up on them because of their

attitudes. Especially the senior. Most of what we read says that they are going through that time of "detaching" and that we should leave them alone. But that's hard, especially when they give us snippy answers to simple questions.

• We seem to always be walking on eggshells just to avoid making waves - but there are waves anyway. We feel that they are basically great kids - involved in youth group and go to church. But somewhere we have failed, and this is a situation that constantly gets us down as parents. Of course, we have prayed about this. Please help!!

•ANSWER:

• (This response is to the dad.)• Regardless of age, the Bible commands children to respect their parents.• Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged . . . — Deuteronomy 5:16 It is your responsibility to see

that your children are continuously taught key Biblical principles.• These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house

and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. — Deuteronomy 6:6-7 So the problem is not entirely your children's insolence. But regardless, your children are moving into a difficult time of decision making in a self-centered state. If you, or someone else, can't reach them with the Biblical armor they need, it could be disastrous. So you should quit worrying about "making waves." By "walking on eggshells" you are promoting their own self-centeredness, not Christ-centeredness.

• The rod and reproof give wisdom, but the child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. — Proverbs 29:15 Explain to them that because you love them, you are going to push for God's best in their lives. But your children need to be taught that God not only loves them (John 3:16) but also is a God who places a high priority on obedience - for their own good.

• You must take control of your children.

— Ephesians 6:1• If they don't respond, you have no choice but to take away privileges, etc.• This should serve as a reminder to all who have children that teaching them spiritual values, foundation, priorities, etc., is more important than anything else in the world.

Deuteronomy 5:18, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE BIBLE• Some Christians give others the idea that Christianity is a dull and joyless faith, and that God is stern and humorless. But God is the One Who created

humor.• For example, did you ever hear of the Bug Bible? Published in 1551, the Bug Bible got the name when, for some unexplainable reason, “Thou shalt not

be afraid for the terror by night” from Psalm 91:5 was printed as, “Thou shalt not be afraid of any buggies by night.” Human error was also presumably responsible for The Wicked Bible, published in 1717. The Wicked Bible got its name because the word “not” was left out of one of the Commandments, leaving the Commandment to read, “Thou shalt commit adultery.”

• One of the most amusing word plays was by Jesus Himself and is found in Matthew 23:24.

SABBATHS (PLURAL) IN THE BIBLEBob Jones www.BibleFood.com

• SABBATHS (PLURAL) IN THE BIBLE• Bob Jones www.BibleFood.com• I) INTRODUCTION• First of all, as you know, there was not only the "seventh day" Sabbath, but the first and last days of the seven Old Testament feasts were special Sabbaths, to be observed just as a seventh day Sabbath. (See Exodus 12:1-6; and 14-16 and Leviticus 23:1-8).• So, there were at least 64 "Sabbaths" in each calendar year. Many weeks had multiple "Sabbaths", one a seventh day Sabbath, the other a "Holy Convocation", the first or last day of a feast. Often, there were Sabbath days back to back - two days in a row. And. probably just as often, a Feast day Sabbath occurred the same

day as the seventh day Sabbath.• Secondly, "Sabbaton", neuter plural, is also used to refer to a "week" of days, in other words, what we call a seven day "week". Whether "Sabbaton" refers to "Sabbath days" or to a "week", must be determined from the context.• Note the use of "Sabbaton" plural, referring to a "week" in Mark 16:2, Luke 24:1, John 20:1 & 19, Acts 20:7, and 1 Cor. 16:2.• II) SELECTED PASSAGES• A) [Mt 12:1, 5, 11-12]:• (v. 1) At that time, (part of the year) it was Jesus' custom to eat corn from the fields on the Sabbath days. He ate whenever He wanted to, whether it was one of the Sabbath days or not.• (v. 5 ) The priests in the temple work on all the Sabbath days. 10 Doing good on any of the Sabbath days.• (v. 11) Doing good on any of the Sabbath days.• (v. 12) Doing good on any of the Sabbath days.• B) [Mt 28:1]:• "After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb."• opse ..de .......sabbatOn .....tE ........epiphOskousE eis .............mian• After but the Sabbath [pl] at [the] dawning ..........toward the first• .......sabbatOn [pl] ...Elthen mariam hE magdalEnE...• day of the week ........came ...Mary ....the Magdalene..."• There are two occurrences of "sabbaton" in this verse. The first use of "sabbaton" is in the genitive plural and occurs in the phrase "after the sabbaths" which refers to a point in time "after the sabbaths" - referring to more than one sabbath. This phrase is then followed by and paralleled with "toward the first day of the

week" where 'week' = 'sabbaton', genitive plural.• Considering the word rendered "first" which modifies the second "sabbaton", genitive plural; we must conclude that this second 'sabbaton' refers to a "week", or period of seven days.• This proves that there was more than one "Sabbath" during the week Jesus was crucified. The first day of the feast of unleavened bread was past. Sabbath number one beginning on Wednesday Evening. And the second sabbath which was past was the weekly Saturday sabbath. The point in time after the sabbathes is

stipulated as on the first day of the week = "sabbaton" when the first trip to the empty tomb is recorded = Sunday dawn.• A.T. Robertson, in his "Word Pictures" calls Matt. 28:1 a "careful chronological statement".• C) [Mk 1:21]:• Immediately, upon arriving at Capernaum, Jesus began teaching on each of the Sabbath days.• D) [Mk 2:23, 24]:• At that time, (part of the year) it was Jesus' custom to eat corn from the fields on the Sabbath days.• E) [Mk 3:2, 4]:• They watched to see if Jesus would heal anyone on any of the Sabbath days.• F) [Mk 16:1-2]:• "Sabbaton" genitive plural, is used for a "week", or period of seven days. Note that in Mark 16:1 "sabbatou" is genitive singular with the article "the", speaking of the Saturday Sabbath.• G) [Mk 16:1, 9]:• Also note how the KJV translators were not consistent, in that they translated "sabbatou", singular, as "week" in Mark 16:9. "Sabbatou", singular in Mark 16:9 should be translated "Sabbath", the seventh day Sabbath. Jesus rose from the grave before the end of the seventh day Sabbath, Sunday morning. The tomb was first

reported empty by Mary Magdalene on the morning after the Friday-Saturday weekly Sabbath.• H) [Lk 4:16]:• It was Jesus custom to go to the synagogue on each of the Sabbath days.• I) [Lk 4:31]:• Again, it was Jesus' custom to go to the synagogue on each of the Sabbath days.• J) [Lk 6:2]:• Why do you do that which is not lawful on the Sabbaths?• K) [Lk 13:10]:• Again, It was Jesus custom to go to the synagogue on each of the Sabbath days.• L) [Lk 24:1]:• "Sabbaton" plural meaning a "week".• M) [Jn 20:1]:• "Sabbaton" plural meaning a "week".• N) [Jn 20:19]:• "Sabbaton" plural meaning a "week".• O) [Acts 13:14]:• This verse and the next, Acts 16:13 point to a specific day. In Acts 13:14 "Sabbaton" plural could mean that the day was both a seventh day Sabbath and a Feast Day Sabbath. Or, with all the Aorist tenses, it could be saying that the Apostles began visiting the synagogue on all the Sabbath days. Doctrinally, I don't see that it

matters, but, the plural must be there for some reason.• P) [Acts 16:13]:• Again, "Sabbaton" plural could mean that the day was both a seventh day Sabbath and a Feast Day Sabbath. Or, it could be saying that the Apostles began the practice of visiting the place of prayer outside the city by the river, on each of the Sabbath days.• Q) [Acts 17:2]:• On the occasion of three Sabbaths.• R) [Acts 20:7]:• "Sabbaton" plural meaning a "week".• S) [Col 2:16]:• Jesus has freed us from all "Sabbath keeping", both seventh day Sabbaths, and Feast day Sabbaths. Now, every day is a "Sabbath" where we rest from our own works, and allow God to work through us.• T) [1 Cor. 16:2]:• In the Textus Receptus, "Sabbaton" plural also occurs in 1 Cor. 16:2, referring to a "week" of seven days.
