LIONS HONOR LIONS HONOR CRUCIAL CATCHCRUCIAL CATCH

As the Lions host the Bengals in Week 6, they celebrate a cause bigger than football with this year’s annual Crucial Catch game. All throughout the month of October, NFL teams come together for the campaign that supports the American Cancer Society (ACS) to fight against the disease. This season,

multiple Lions players have ties to the initiative.

The NFL’s crucial catch efforts focus on early detection, and have provided 374,000 breast cancer screenings. Lions C Frank Ragnow, OLB Trey Flowers and LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin have all been affected by breast cancer in their families.

>> Frank Ragnow’s mother, Marty, was diagnosedwith breast cancer in 2015 and was able to make aquick recovery because of early detection. “She’sbeen a fighter, she’s been Wonder Woman, and it’sjust I love that woman and I’m so thankful for her,”Ragnow said.

>> Trey Flowers’ sister, Jazz, is a breast cancer survivor. Flowers has heldbreast cancer awareness events with the Sisters Network of Detroit in honor of her. Jazz will partake inthis year’s Crucial Catch ceremonies.

>> Jalen Reeves-Maybin lost his grandmother, Charlotte, to breast cancer. As he was incredibly close toher, throughout his playing career, he has worn a form of pink to honor her. “Everything I do, I dedicateto her,” Reeves-Maybin said. “I wear pink every day. Every pair of shoes I have, I put pink shoelaces inthem. I won’t wear shoes without them, except on the field.”

Lions CB Amani Oruwariye has directly felt the effects of cancer, losing his father, Alfred, to pancreatic cancer while he was a redshirt freshman at Penn State. He has a tattoo on his left arm that honors his father, depicting Alfred walking through the gates of Heaven.

Alfred and Amani Oruwariye are pictured to the left.

“If you don’t fight cancer, you don’t know Jack.” Lions T Matt Nelson honors this phrase every opportunity he can, celebrating the life of Jack, a child he befriended from his hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that suffered from a rare form of brain cancer. Today, he supports his family and his foundation I Know Jack that raises money and supplies for families fighting cancer. The foundation has also been his chosen My Cause, My Cleats charity throughout his playing career.

Last year, Lions WR Trinity Benson surprised his mother, Debra, with his My Cause, My Cleats selection, donning the message “#DebraStrong” in honor of her fight with stage III colorectal cancer. His cleats supported the Fight CRC Foundation. Benson and his family watched Debra undergo chemotherapy and surgery, witnessing her unwavering strength throughout it all. “My mom is a fighter! Colon cancer is something I have been personally affected by and there is no better way to use my voice and my platform to bring awareness to an issue that can sometimes be

caught in the shadows of some of the other cancers, Benson said.”

The NFL’s CHANGE grants have provided 207,000 colorectal cancer screenings.

Although he was only three years old at the time of her diagnosis, Lions QB David Blough continues to honor his mother LuAnn Blough, who is a two-time oral cancer survivor. While at Purdue, Blough participated in events supporting The Purdue Center for Cancer Research. It was during this time he also befriended Tyler Trent, who he remembers to this day during his My Cause, My Cleats initiatives.

ROAD TO 2525K

1973: The 10,000th franchise point went to none other than Charlie Sanders, who recorded a

5-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Colts on Oct. 21, 1973.

As the Lions are one point away from becoming the sixth franchise to reach 25,000 all-time points in Week 6, below is a look back on previous point milestones the team has reached.

1930: On Sept. 14, 1930, Chuck Bennett scored the then-Portsmouth Spartans’ first-ever points, hauling in an 11-yard touchdown to beat the Newark Tornadoes 13-6.11

1954: Detroit reached 5,000 franchise points in a 14-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, as Dorne Dibble brought in the TD reception on Dec. 19, 1954.5K5K

10K10K

1935: The Lions went on to amass 1,000 points through five years, reaching the 1K mark with a safety on Dec. 1, 1935 in a dominant 28-0 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. 1k1k

Page 5: DETROIT LIONS (0-5) VS. CINCINNATI BENGALS (3-2)

20K20K2007: The Lions’ 20,000th franchise point came in dramatic fashion, one that Head Coach Dan Campbell witnessed himself as part of the

2007 team. After QB Jon Kitna made an improbable return to the game after a hard hit, he set up Jason Hanson to connect on a 37-yard field goal in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 16, 2007. The field goal gave Detroit a 20-17 victory, alongside the 20,000 point landmark. At the conclusion of the 2007 season, the Lions were one of seven teams to reach the mark.

2525KFRANCHISEPOINTS

In Week 6 vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, the Lions will attempt to make history against an NFC North division rival. With one point, Detroit will become the sixth franchise to reach 25,000 all-time points. They would join the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles to reach the mark. The Lions are 4-1 in games they have reached a milestone in franchise points.
