FROM NICK KHOURI Detroit LISC Local Advisory Outgoing Board Chair

My tenure as Board Chairman of Detroit LISC has been a rewarding, productive and exciting experience. When I stepped into this role, Detroit faced many challenges. It was an uphill climb for many of us taking up the charge to rebuild our neighborhoods

and advance a strong agenda for community development. We united and made that climb together with a clear focus on creating a new landscape in the city, one that was complete with opportunity for growth, healthy, thriving neighborhoods and economic enhancement.

Though much work needs to be done, I am proud to have been able to work hand-in-hand with the leadership of Detroit LISC and its strategic partners to move the Building Sustainable Communities initiative forward. During my tenure, LISC demonstrated its commitment to bringing the five core principles to fruition throughout Detroit: building the physical environment; stimulating the local economy; increasing family wealth and income; improving access to quality education; and fostering safe, healthy environments.

As my tenure as Board Chair comes to an end, I can look out at the horizon and see the impact of LISC’s work. Signs of recovery are evident and hope is in the air. The promise of long-term growth and enhancements are taking place thanks to the work of the dedicated individuals and organizations being honored at the 2013 Detroit Community Development Awards.

The role of chairman of the LISC Advisory Board offers the opportunity to form strategic partnerships, to collaborate and the ability to transform a community. It has been an honor to serve, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to this great organization. As I pass the reins of the Chairperson of the Local Advisory Board to Tonya Allen, the CEO of the Skillman Foundation, I know she will continue the legacy of changing the quality of life for today’s population, as well as future generations for the better.

Nick Khouri DTE Energy Company Vice President of Regulatory Affairs

FROM TONYA ALLEN Detroit LISC Local Advisory Incoming Board Chair

It is said: We must be the change we want to see in the world. I believe we need to take that vision even further to commit to being the change we want to see right here in our own communities, in our own backyards.

The men, women and organizations being honored tonight for their work in community development are doing just that. I congratulate this year’s awardees, and I can’t wait to see and meet the new lions of community development who are already busy working on innovative ways to impact their communities.

As a native Detroiter, I’m passionate about this city. I’m equally passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of the men, women and children who reside in our neighborhoods, attend our schools and work here. So, I’m both honored and excited to step into the role of Chairperson for the Detroit LISC Local Advisory Board.

My role at Skillman has allowed me to partner with LISC on so many important programs. Now as Board Chair, I will volunteer and commit my time to working with our current stakeholders as well as creating new partnerships and opportunities.

I would like to applaud Nick Khouri, outgoing Chairperson of the Local Advisory Board, who has done a remarkable job of mobilizing the Detroit LISC Local Advisory Board and the community around the Building Sustainable Communities agenda. He has been a trailblazer, and I look forward to taking the reins and continuing the strategic vision around neighborhood sustainability and economic development.

I look forward to working with all the residents, CDCs, corporate partners and the extraordinary LISC staff. I know together we will accomplish great things and be architects for change in the city of Detroit… building strong, safe and sustainable communities.

Tonya Allen CEO of the Skillman Foundation

Welcome!

from Governor Rick Snyder

letter

November 19, 2013

Michigan is a state made up of many diverse and historic cities that continue to have a positive impact on our State, as well as the nation. Detroit is one of those cities. The City of Detroit is rebounding and a bright new future is being charted for the people who call our State’s largest city home.

As Governor, I know first-hand that rebuilding this city can only be accomplished by creating a spirit of strong collaboration between the philanthropic community, government agencies, community development corporations and local citizens. Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD) are two organizations that also embrace this philosophy.

Through its Building Sustainable Communities program, Detroit LISC aggregates funds and resources to organizations focusing on providing affordable housing, stabilizing neighborhoods, using art for place making and economic development, improving access to quality education, creating healthy neighborhoods and building family wealth.

For 15 years, CDAD has served as the trade association for nonprofit, community-based development organizations in Detroit. Its strategic community-based tools and public policy advocacy efforts continue to support grass-roots programs to improve Detroit communities.

On this 19th day of November, Detroit LISC and CDAD are presenting the Community Development Awards to honor and recognize those local residents, corporate partners and non-profit organizations moving this important work forward. These awardees are dedicated volunteers, trailblazers and leaders who are transforming Detroit communities into thriving and vibrant places to live, work and play.

On behalf of the citizens of the great State of Michigan, I would like to congratulate the 2013 Community Development Awardees, and thank you for your commitment, diligence and public service to Detroit and to the state. You are bright lights, beacons of hope and change – and your work will continue to energize the City of Detroit.

Sincerely,

Rick Snyder Governor

Detroit Community Development Awards

about the

DETROIT LOCAL INITIATIVES SUPPORT CORPORATION (LISC)

Detroit LISC is one of 30 local urban offices of LISC, a national organization dedicated to helping community residents transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy and sustainable communities of choice and opportunity – good places to work, do business, and raise children. LISC mobilizes corporate, government, and philanthropic support to provide local community development organizations with financing, technical and management assistance, training opportunities, and policy support. Since 1990, LISC has invested more than $175 million and leveraged more than $738 million to revitalize Detroit’s neighborhoods. By supporting community development partners, Detroit LISC has helped create over 3,750 units of affordable housing and more than 1.8 million square feet of commercial and community space, including schools, health care centers, and social service facilities.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ADVOCATES OF DETROIT (CDAD)

For 15 years, the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD) has served as the leading voice for Detroit’s community development industry. A trade association of community development organizations, CDAD serves as a catalyst for the transformation of Detroit neighborhoods led and inspired by residents, community-based organizations, and other community stakeholders. It also advocates for public policies and resources that advance the work of Detroit-based nonprofits and community organizations that are engaged in physical development, land use planning, community organizing, and other activities designed to stabilize and revitalize the quality of life in Detroit.

The Detroit Community Development Awards was first established in 2001 to honor the hardworking residents and organizations whose vision and leadership were transforming their communities into good places to live, do business, work and raise families. Their work has blossomed into bright signs of economic recovery, the resurgence of safe and healthy neighborhoods, and hope on of the faces of those people who call Detroit home.

This year’s prestigious event is presented by the Masco Corporation Foundation and co-sponsored by the Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD). The annual Detroit Community Development Awards ceremony is an event that assembles corporations, foundations, financial institutions, small businesses, developers, and nonprofits for a festive night of celebration and tribute.

CHAMPION FOR WORKING FAMILIESFocus: HOPE Greater Detroit Centers for

Working Families (CWF)

This award honors an organization that has excelled in bringing valuable services and programs to uplift families

in Detroit and help them build their assets, acquire new skills and increase net worth and income. We are pleased

to pay tribute and present the award to Focus: HOPE Centers for Working Families (CWF).

Focus: HOPE’s Greater Detroit Center for Working Families (CWF) is transforming the lives of Detroit families in amazing and profound ways. Since it launched in 2008 as a pilot program, the CWF program has impacted the lives of more than 800 people who have been served by program. Focus: HOPE’s CWF has helped both individuals and families increase their monthly net income, improve their credit scores, develop financial literacy skills, complete job training programs and approach life with new hope for a better tomorrow. The Focus: HOPE CWF continues to create a pipeline of resources for its participants, connecting them to job opportunities and other valuable wealth-building resources. The organization has successfully partnered with the Department of Human Services and Michigan Rehab Services, which now have on-site representatives to provide services and resources to CWF families at Focus: HOPE. CWF participants can also access the Accounting Aid Society for assistance with preparing tax returns, and take advantage of the Public Service Credit Union that is now located on the campus of Focus: HOPE. This important work continues to help families attain financial stability and move up the economic ladder.

EXEMPLARY NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERSHIP

Marsha Bruhn

This award recognizes an individual who has shown leadership in mobilizing local residents and organizations

to actively participate in efforts to improve the quality of life in the community. This year, we are proud to honor

Marsha Bruhn of the North Rosedale Park Civic Association and the Grandmont Rosedale

Development Corporation (GRDC).

A longtime resident of North Rosedale Park, Marsha Bruhn is a leader who helped increase property values, curtail the exodus of residents from Detroit and offer hope for a brighter tomorrow. As the retired Director of the Detroit City Planning Commission, Bruhn is committed to enhancing the quality of life within her community through various neighborhood stabilization initiatives, including the annual Rosedale Park Neighborhood Open House. She also launched the Rosedale Park Code Enforcement Committee initiative to educate residents about ordinances and enforcement of penalties for non-compliance. As the chair of the North Rosedale Park Community House Capital Campaign, she is generating support to repair, upgrade and renovate the Rosedale Park Community House – a neighborhood resource and landmark. Marsha Bruhn is a force for positive change in both her neighborhood and throughout Detroit.

EXCELLENCE IN REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT

Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO) Bell Building

This award recognizes a project that has made a significant difference in the physical development

of a community through the construction or rehabilitation of housing or a commercial project. This year’s award

is presented to the Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO) Bell Building.

The NSO Bell Building is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about being of service to the community, and bringing the homeless in from the streets. In essence it’s about changing lives for the better. When the newly renovated building opened its doors to its first tenant in August 2013, it meant a new beginning for more than 150 formerly homeless adults and a new headquarters for NSO. Built in 1929, the iconic Bell Building, once home to the Yellow Pages, has been transformed into an edifice that houses 155 fully furnished, one-bedroom apartments that provide permanent supportive housing to Detroit’s homeless population. The facility includes a gym, library, computer room, art and music rooms, a chapel, a general store where residents can purchase household items, and a health clinic for residents and community members. Recognized for its unique financing, development features and community impact, the NSO Bell Building continues to garner awards including the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award.

THE BRIDGET VANCE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY

SAFETY INITIATIVEGrandmont Rosedale Development

Corporation Community Security Program

This award recognizes an individual or organization that has greatly improved the community by working with others to promote a safe and healthy environment for

families. This year, we are proud to honor the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation (GRDC)

Community Security Program.

Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation’s (GRDC) Community Security Program (CSP) galvanized residents around a proactive, community crime-fighting effort. The effective program combined a grass-roots crime deterrent model with 21st century technology to lower the crime rate, increase community capacity and address public safety concerns. As part of the CSP, the GRDC retooled citizen radio patrols; launched an area-wide crime alert email system; created a community task force and hired a full-time community security program manager. This approach has kept Grandmont Rosedale residents informed of suspicious behavior in the community, helped compile relative crime statistics, and coordinated civilian anti-crime initiatives – all resulting in increased safety and police accountability. Last year, collaboration between CSP and the Detroit Police Department resulted in the “Ordinance Maintenance” community policing pilot initiative that reduced crime in the area by 32 percent. The GRDC continues to partner with its citizens on the CSP and other programs that help make their community a safe and healthy place to live.

to Bridget Vance

a tribute

Bridget began volunteering with a coalition sponsored by Focus: HOPE working to obtain funding to improve the neighborhood. Soon after, she stepped into the newly created position of Community Safety Coordinator at Focus: HOPE funded by Detroit LISC.

Bridget had an innate talent for uniting people around safety and community issues. She found ways to effectively work closely with area residents, businesses and law enforcement to improve the quality of life for all stakeholders. She pioneered programs for the city’s youth, including an innovative community “safety station” in Central High School Academy, and trained youth in the principles of crime prevention that provided them with valuable life and leadership skills.

Bridget Vance led the implementation of radio safety patrols and created an informational e-newsletter around community safety in Detroit. Her passion and tenacity helped to form numerous coalitions among a diverse group of neighborhood block clubs and organizations, such as the Historic Boston-Edison Association and the Vanguard Community Development Corporation,

earning Bridget a reputation for being an effective and fearless leader.

Although she garnered numerous awards and certificates, including several Spirit of Detroit awards and three awards from the Detroit Police Department, that was not her motivation. She loved her work. She loved her community.

Friends and colleagues were inspired by her determination and zeal, and continue to lift up her memory as a collaborator, mentor and champion for safety. Bridget Vance will forever be a shining example of passion, commitment and dedication and it is for these reasons we are naming the Community Safety Award in her memory.

Bridget served as the Community Safety Coordinator at Focus: HOPE for five years, where she became a true agent for change in creating initiatives to make local communities safe and secure. Her journey started in 2007 when, as a resident, she was concerned about improving the condition of the West Davison commercial corridor.

EXCEPTIONAL PARTNER IN NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

This award recognizes a funder that has taken a lead role on a consistent basis in transforming the city

and partnering with one or more non-profit organizations to advance neighborhood redevelopment efforts.

This year, we proudly present this honor to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

More than half of Detroit residents lack access to fresh and healthy food and often buy low-quality and highly-processed products from nearby convenience stores or gas stations. However, there’s new hope on the horizon, thanks to the vision and leadership of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Providing access to healthy, fresh food options is a core mission for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The organization took on a leadership role in enhancing the quality of life in Detroit by literally transforming the food environment. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation supported the Double Up Food Bucks program that doubles the value of Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits when used at farmers’ markets. The foundation also made a multi-million dollar investment in Detroit’s Eastern Market to strengthen the market’s identity as a food-related district that offers business opportunities for specialty food retailers, food wholesale operations, restaurants, food distributors, and food processors. Eastern Market has become the epicenter for fresh food, as well as serving as a unique public gathering place and attractive destination for creative people in which to live, work, visit, and invest.

EMERGING PARTNER IN NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT

The Ford Motor Company Fund

This award pays tribute to a funder that has worked in partnership with one or more non-profits to launch

a creative and innovative community project that dramatically elevated the quality of life and sparked

economic vitality. We are pleased to present the award to the Ford Motor Company Fund for its work

in and around Mexicantown.

Operating from a place of passion, purpose and possibility, The Ford Motor Company Fund has made strategic investments to strengthen neighborhoods, support education and respond to the needs of communities throughout Detroit. A crowning achievement has been in Southwest Detroit with the new Ford Resource and Engagement Center that opened at the Mexicantown Mercado building. The building was under-utilized for many years but has been reborn and now offers cultural programs, dance lessons, language classes, job training programs, and a Gleaners food service center. The Ford Motor Company Fund’s extraordinary work and $10 million commitment to the Ford Resource and Engagement Center is helping to breathe new life into Southwest Detroit and maintain the community as a thriving and promising neighborhood. It will also inspire other organizations to take up the charge to build sustainable communities where people can live, work, and raise families. th

THE LISC/NFL GRASSROOTS PROGRAM GRANT

Nearly 15 years ago, national LISC and the National Football League Foundation joined forces to kick-off the LISC NFL Grassroots Program to provide nonprofit, neighborhood-based organizations with grants and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields in under-served neighborhoods. Since 1998, this amazing partnership has distributed $35 million in grants to help build and improve more than 276 playing fields in more than 100 cities nationwide.

We are pleased to announce that two Detroit nonprofit organizations have recently been awarded $200,000 grants each from this highly competitive program – the Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) in 2012 and Detroit PAL in 2013. While the two grants will fund new, state-of-the art football playing fields, the impact extends beyond gridiron and scoreboards. These fields will serve as tremendous community assets by offering opportunities for recreation, sports, relaxation, and social gathering that contribute to the local quality of life and promote the healthy development of youth.

THE CDC OF THE YEARMidtown Detroit, Inc.

This award recognizes a Community Development Corporation (CDC) that has made a demonstrable

impact on the quality of life in its community. This year, we honor Midtown Detroit, Inc.

Midtown Detroit, Inc. has been and continues to be a force for change and transformation and a leader in community redevelopment. The Midtown area is now a community in which to live, grow, and invest – thanks to the efforts of Midtown Detroit, Inc. and the dynamic leadership of its president, Susan Mosey.

Midtown Detroit, Inc. has spearheaded numerous redevelopment initiatives that have literally transformed the landscape of the Midtown area. Gone are the once abandoned lots and boarded up buildings. Anchored by two major medical centers and Michigan’s third largest university, Midtown is a hip and bustling urban center attracting visionaries, new businesses, and talented and creative individuals who want to live and work in the area. This metro hot spot is rich with cultural opportunities, entertainment, recreation, and new bike lanes.

Midtown Detroit Inc. has successfully attracted millions of investment dollars and capital and infused them into the area. The organization created incentives to increase both residential and commercial occupancy in what is now some of the most sought-after real estate in southeast Michigan. It also works to preserve the unique history and heritage of the neighborhood. Working block by block to reinvent and reinvigorate, Midtown Detroit, Inc. has created a unique model for urban revitalization and economic development that can be, and should be, replicated throughout the city of Detroit.th
