What is a Middle College ???

It is a collaboration between a high school district and a community college to allow high school students that are struggling or need a different learning environment to thrive.

What is a Middle College???? A middle college is a high school on a

college campus

The very first middle college was established in 1976 at LaGuardia Community College in New York

Kettering High School will be the initial location of the DAHMCHS, beginning September 2007.

Students will have a wide range of experiences

Students will attend a high school on a college campus

9th and 10th grade students begin in a high school environment with strong focus on literacy

Transition classes are offered during the 9th and 10th grades

In the next phase, students will attend actual college classes where only one third of class will be high school studentsARG

Daily seminars are provided when students are in college classes

Tutorial aspect Discussion of text to build self-confidence Study groups

Students attend high school classes in the morning and college classes in the afternoon

The goal is that EVERY youngster gets 30 college credits by end of 12th grade

The goal is that students earn an Associate Degree by the end of the 13th year

Importance of location on college campus …

Being on a college campus affects the high school students’ view of themselves.

The college environment positively impacts the attitudes and behaviors of the high school students.

The power of a middle college is that the high school age students gradually interface with adult students.

Students (parents) enter the DAHMCHS with a clear understanding of the commitment needed for success

Summer is a requirement of the DAHMCHS experience.

Sometimes the day may be elongated.

A 13th year is required.

Yields an Associate Degree and/or transferable college credits with no cost to the student or his/her family

Provides students college credits from WCCCD that are transferable to other colleges and universities

Includes student visits, internships, and work experience through its partner, the DMC

Teachers lead an advisory system called “focus groups”

CONCERN …

Students under the age of 18 cannot attend clinical courses, as mandated by the state.

Therefore, 11th and 12th grade students can take liberal arts and other degree requirements, until they turn 18 years old.
