The Agile Fractal Grid
List of Useful Case Studies• Verizon – master plan for national datacenters and integration of all major systems in the
integrated revenue domain.
• IBM Emerging Business Opportunities – 43 engagements planning fiber and wireless services for states, cities, universities, and hospitals
• Milton Keynes – Working with BT on the Data Hub for the smart city program in the fastest growing city in the UK
• PTRP – plan for shared infrastructure for the nation’s largest medical research park.
• Agile Fractal Grid – a plan for securing the nation’s power grid using cooperative decentralized control structures in buildings, neighborhoods, and local distribution networks.
• University of California San Diego – 46 active microgrid elements
• Pecan Street – the country’s most preeminent innovation neighborhood – transactive energy plan with emphasis on personal security and privacy.
• Security Fabric – Intel initiative to secure the Industrial Internet
We have about a billion years of evolution that showsthat all higher level organisms have a familiar pattern…
All other approaches seem to die out over time.
Digital control is neededat each junction point.
Like electricity,broadband can be used
for multiple things.
The Circulatory System The Nervous System
Electric power distribution and broadband communications are like Siamese twins!(They can’t go anywhere without each other.)
There are two aspects to the anatomy of the smart city.
• The Brain– This is the network of
incubators.– Armed with the fun and
excitement of creativity– Comfortable beyond compare– Where the social interaction
evolves the agile development at breakneck speed.
• The Nervous System– Armed with autonomic
modular computing nodes spread all over the city.
– Connected by red hot broadband faster than anything else in the world.
– Reaching every person, every car, every building, and all the infrastructure.
This will be where work, learning, and play all begin to converge.
The emerging role of electric poweris as fundamental as currency itself.
• The world now depends on the security, reliability, and efficiency of electricity.
• A new paradigm is emerging that will serve the next 100 years.
• It needs to follow the broadband connectivity and touch every point of the infrastructure.
The Agile Fractal Grid
This approach does not do away withthe electric grid of the last 100 years. But it makes it work more effectivelyin this new era of alternative energy.
We are now planning to support the 940 rural co-ops in the U.S. with hybrid cloud/device services.
There are potentially 42 million Americans that will be served by this system.
What NRECA has asked us to do.
1. Provide an “applications store” for operational, analytical, and financial applications for the cooperatives.
2. Participate in the “Substation of the Future” for the remote equipment and subsystems.
3. Apply the Security Fabric within the emerging Industrial Internet to protect all communications between the elements.
The individual cooperatives will have multiple choices for individual products or applications.
The Security Fabric itself operatesat each level in the supply chain.

There are actually three layers to the communications:
1. The national core
2. The regional transmission paths
3. The local distribution paths
It is always important to understand the next larger contextbefore attempting to design a particular thing.
- Eero Saarinen
As our Industrial Internet partner, Internet2, will provide the secure core DWDM network for
the national broadband reach.
The national core network by itself is not enough.
We need a combination of
• traditional carriers,
• middle mile rural providers, and
• power transmission operators with dark fiber
to provide the take-out paths to the substations.
The Merit Network provides the middle mile for the entire state of Michigan.
Detroit is well positioned to be a hub for the rest of the state.

There would actually be four networkssharing the same physical infrastructure.
• When it comes to responding to emergencies and support for the communities, there are no bounds placed on what policies their members can have that will lead to the sustainability of their communities.
• This extends to the option of sharing their infrastructure for the good of the community in any way they see fit.
• We are examining the possibility of deploying four simultaneous networks on the shared infrastructure:
– Industrial Internet – for the control of the Agile Fractal Grid
– Generic direct Internet access – for residences and business
– Cellular coverage – for extending cellular coverage
– First responder access – for managing community emergencies. This is what Smart America is all about.

Milton Keynes is the primary smart city project in the UK.
• Milton Keynes is the UK’s fastest growing city.
• MK Resources and Services are under strain- city infrastructure was designed for a smaller population.
• Target: enable growth of 20% with no net increase in water, energy, congestion, waste collections, …
• SME incubator of up to 100 SMEs, with projects in transport, energy, water and education
