AGE DETERMINING

Determining the age of an individual abalone is difficult, because of the irregularity in the pattern of growth marks or bands.

One method used to determine abalone age, is cutting the abalone shell through the cone, straining it and then counting the numbers of rings under a microscope. This method however is expensive and time-consuming (www.stats.duke.edu).

AGE DETERMINING

Another method of determining age, is to use shell autoflorescence.

This method determines the age of an abalone individual by looking at the internal growth bands (Proudfoot et al. 2007).

This method has proven to be less time-consuming and is not destructive on the abalone species (Poudfoot et al. 2007).
