Introduction Th e determination of ash is an importan t fa ctor in controlling th e quality of GR-S synth et ic rubb ers and latices and in assuring the cons umer t hat hi s mat erial meets the requir ement s of th e specifi cat ion . M ethod s u se d in ashing n at ural rubb er [4 , S, 9V natural rubb er lat.ex [7 , S, 9, IS), and other similar organi c compounds [1 , 2, 3, 5, 6] call for di st ill ation of the dry sample by grad ually raising the temp era- t ur e of the specimen from room temperature to a poin t somewhat below the ignition temperature of th e gases formed. Th e carbona ceous residue is then ashed to ocon stant weight at temperatures varying from 400 to 550° C, dependin g on the sub stan ce tested. This di st illation pro cedure is too time con- s uming for control test in g. In trodu ct ion of GR-S rubb er into a mume furn ace at the final ashing tem- peratur e, as suggested by one of the plan t labor ato ri es [17], yields sat isfact ory r es ult s wi th many sampb s. However, when applied to cer tain sampl es of GR-S r ubb er, parti cularly those coagulated with alum, t hi s pro ce dur e yields results that may be low by as mu ch as 30 per cent . Th ese low r es ults are du e to loss of material that froths a nd overrun s the ed ge of the crucible durin g the early stages of the pyrol.v- sis. In addition, wh en GR-S la tex is ashed accord- in g to the pro ce dur e used for n at ur al rubber la tex. the carbonaceous residue formed on di st illation may be removed only at temp eratur es that cause appre- loss of inorganic mat erial. Accordingly, tech- mqu es w ere developed for safely introducing ei th er undri ed lat ex or rubber into the furna ce at the ashing temperature, and for facilitating through the use of a washing treatment, the removal of the carbonaceous mat erial formed in ashing GR-S lat ex. Th ese tech- niqu es have be en adopt ed for use in the official method s of the Governmen t synth et ic rubb er pro- gram [10 , 12 , 13), and should be applicabl e to other organic mat erials that m ay give rise to difficulti es in ashing. 2. Procedure GR- S. The sample to be tested is mill-massed on a laboratory rubb er mill and sh eeted. Th e resulting roIL is then folded over once or t wi ce on itself and placed in a por celain or a.luminum cru cible that has a volume of from 30 to 60 ml, and that has b een ignit ed to con stant weight (± 0.2 mg) at 55 0° C plu s or mi nu s 25 ° C. Th e cru cible conta.ining the wrapped spec i- men is pl aced dir ect ly into a muffle furnace main- tained at 550° C. plus or minus 25° C. Th e door of the furna ce is closed find should not be reopened until co mbu stion of the earbon aceo us ma te rial is nearly co mpl ete (3 0 to 60 min .). A small quanti ty of dry ashl ess filt er pulp (0 .25 to 0 .5 0 g) is pressed down in to the bottom of the cone, and the crucible a nd its con- tents are weighed to the nearest milli gram in a weighing bottle or fri ction top m etal conLa in er. Five milliliters of lat ex, pr eviously filtered through an SO-mesh stainless steel wire screen, are pour ed i.n to the con e and the crucibl e. and its co nt en ts are re- weighed to th e nearest 'milligram. Th e cru cible and its contents are placed dir ectly in to a muffle furna ce maintain ed at 550° C plus or minus 25° C. The door of the furnace is closed and s hould not be reopened for 45 to 60 min . The crucible is then removed and allowed to cool until it may be touched by hand (a bout 10 min.). Filter paper and filter pulp are used to pre vent either materialfrom overrunning the edge of the crucible when introduced into the furnace at threshold temperature. Water is used to facilitate the burning of the carbonaceous residue obtainedin ashing GR- S latex. These procedures have been put in to use in the control testing of GR- S production. They are as precise as other methods of ashing and far less time-consuming. The techniques employed should be applicable to other organic materials.

1. Introduction

The determination of ash is an important factor in controlling the quality of GR- S synthetic rubbers and lati ces and in assuring the consumer that his material meets the requirements of th e specification . M ethods used in ashing n atural rubber [4 , S, 9V natural rubber lat.ex [7 , S, 9, IS), and other similar organic compounds [1 , 2, 3, 5, 6] call for distillation of the dry sample by gradually raising the tempera­ture of the specimen from room temperature to a point somewhat below th e ignition temperature of the gases formed. The carbonaceous residu e is then ashed to oconstant weight at temperatures varying from 400 to 550° C, depending on the substance tested. This distillation procedure is too time con­suming for control testing. Introdu ction of GR-S rubber into a mume furn ace at the final ashing tem­p erature, as suggested by one of the plan t laboratories [17], yields satisfactory results wi th many sampb s. However, when applied to cer tain samples of GR- S rubb er, parti cularly those coagulated with alum, this procedure yields results that may be low by as mu ch as 30 percent. Th ese low res ul ts are du e to loss of m a terial that froth s and overruns the edge of the cruci ble during th e early stages of the pyrol.v­sis. In addition, when GR-S latex is ashed accord­ing to the procedure used for n atural rubber la tex. the carbonaceous residue formed on distillat ion m ay b e removed only at temperatures that cause appre­c~able loss of inorgani c material. Accordingly, tech­mques w ere developed for safely introducing eith er undried latex or rubber into the furnace at the ashing temperature, and for facilitating through the use of a washing treatment, the removal of the carbonaceous material formed in ashing GR-S latex. These tech­niques have been adopted for use in the official methods of the Governmen t synth etic rubber pro­gram [10, 12, 13), and should be applicable to other organic materials that may give rise to difficulti es in ashing.

2 . Procedure

GR- S. The sample to be tested is mill-massed on a laboratory rubber mill and sh eeted . A 2- to 5-g

specimen of th e sheeted rubber is weighed to the nearest milligram and wrapped in a single sheet of l5-cm "ashless" filter paper by spreading it along a chord of the circle midway between the cen ter and the edge. The paper is rolled into a tight cylinder around the rubber , and th e ends of th e filter paper are folded over the sample. Th e resulting roIL is then folded over once or twice on i tself and placed in a porcelain or a.luminum crucible that has a volume of from 30 to 60 ml, and that has been ignited to constant weight (± 0.2 mg) at 550° C plus or m inus 25° C . The cru cible conta.ining the wrapped speci­men is placed directly into a muffle furnace main­tained at 550° C . plus or minu s 25° C. The door of the furnace is closed find should not be reopened until combustion of the earbonaceo us material is nearly complete (30 to 60 min .). After the carbon appears to h ave burned co mpletely, th e crucible is removed from th e fu maee, cooled to room tempera­ture in a desiccator, and weighed. As a check for the complete removal of carbon, the specimen m ay be reheated for 30-min. intervals un til it h as attained constan t weight within ± 0.2 mg.

A correction should b Cl made for th e ash content of the fil ter paper when the effect is greater than 0.01 percen t of the weigh t of the specimen .

GR- S L atex. A circle of ashless filter paper 9 cm in diameter is folded in to th e form of a cone, and inser ted in to a 60-ml porcelain crucible previously ignited to constant weight (± 0.2 mg) at 550° C plus or minus 25° C. A small quanti ty of dry ashless filter pulp (0.25 to 0.50 g) is pressed down in to th e bottom of the cone, and the crucible and its con­tents are weighed to the neares t milligram in a weighing bottle or fri ction top metal conLainer. Five milliliters of latex, previously filtered through an SO-mesh stainless steel wire screen , are poured i.nto the cone and the crucible. and its conten ts are re­weighed to the nearest 'milligram. The crucible and its contents are placed directly into a muffle furnace maintained at 550° C plus or minus 25° C. The door of the furnace is closed and should not be reopened for 45 to 60 min. The crucible is then removed and allowed to cool until it may be touched by hand (about 10 min.) . Two to five drops of distilled water are added to th e ash, the actual number depending upon the quantity of residue present. Suffieient time should b e allowed between

drops for the water to be absorbed by the residue before the next drop is added. An unabsorbed ex­cess of water should be avoided, since it will cause spattering of the residue upon the side of the crucible during ashing, thus making subsequent washes more difficult. The dampened residue is ashed for one-half hour, and the alternate wetting and ashing procedures are repeated until all of the carbon appears to have been burned. The cruc.ible and its contents are cooled to room temperature m a desiccator and weighed. As a check for the complete removal of carbon, the wetting and ashing tech­niques may be repeated again un til the ~rucible. a~d its contents have reached constant weJght wlthm ± 0.5 mg. This usually requires from two to five washes and a total time of 2 to 4 hours, depending upon the latex tested.

3. Discussion of Techniques

3.1. Temperature of Ashing

A temperature of 550 0 C was chosen to allow for the fairly rapid burning of both uncompounded GR- S and OR- S latex with a minimum loss of in­organic material through decomposition or volatili­zation. R edu cing th e temperature of the furnace below this point greatly slows down the rate of ashing. Lower temperatures are necessary only when the method is applied to certain compounded stocks containing appreciable quantities of materials that decompose or volatilize at this temperature [14] . The furnace door should b e kept closed to prevent rapid burning and glowing of the specimen at temperatures that may be above the furnace tcm­perature. Loss from explosion of the distilling gases during the early stages of the pyrolysis is prevented by the filter paper that appears to be intact at this t ime.

3.2. Choice of Crucible

Both aluminum 2 [16] and porcelain crucibles have been found satisfactory for use in the determina­t ion of ash in OR- So Aluminum cru cibles are more suitable for rapid routine testing because they are (1) much less expensive; (2) more uniform in weight (approximately 5.2 g for those used in this work) ; (3) more r'Lpidly cooled . The crucibles used in this work have straight sides and a relatively large base. Consequently, th ey are more stable and the wrapped sp ecimen remains on the bottom of the crucible even when it tends to uncurl.

However, only porcelain crucibles may be used in ashing OR- S latices. Figure 1 shows the results obtained when bo th porcelain and aluminum cruci­bles are used. It was believed that the observed increase in the weight of the r esidue in the aluminum crucibles on repeated wetting and ashing resulted from a r eaction between the aluminum and the water in the presence of the alkaline residue obtained

from ashing the soap in the latex. Tests made by wetting pure sodium carbonate with water and heating as directed in the procedure lend support to this view.

3.3. Use of Filter Paper and Pulp

In addition to preventing loss from explosion the use of filter paper allows all types of GR- S polymers to be ashed without loss frem frothing when intro­duced into the furnace at the ashing temperature. This technique has been used in ashing volatile metallo-organic compounds [11]. OXIlI;ic ac~d or ammonium oxalate placed over the specimen m the crucible help to prevent " boiling over" of the poly­mer bu t are not as satisfactory as filter paper : Rubber charred with nitric acid or treated with sulfuric acid or Ilmmonium sulfate prior to ashing does not effervesce, but the resulting values are different from those obtained by the slow-ashing procedures [4, 8]. In addition, the ash obtained when the specimen is wrapped in filter paper is quite porous and fluffy , and can be readily extracted or dissolved for further analysis .

GR- S latex may be ashed without previously drying the specimen if ashless filter pulp is used to absorb the liquid and to prevent the spattering that would otherwise occur during the first few minutes in the furnace. Not only is a fluffy residue obtained, but the cone prevents tbe residue from adhering to the walls of the crucible. The washing and burning of the carbonaceous material are thus facili tated.

3.4. Washing of the Ash

It is believed tha t the slow and incomplet.e ashing of GR- S la tex is due to a pro tective layer of salt that covers the carbon formed when the polymeric portion of the la tex is burned. It is probable that treating the residue with small por tions of water r emoves at least part of this coating of salt, permit­ting an addi t ional portion of the carbon to be burned . Qualitative tests indicate the presence. of carb?~ate resulting from ashing the soap present m the ~mgmal latex. Since th e coagulated polymer contams but

little soap, GR- S may be ashed within 1 hom with­out the washing treatment. Nitric acid , sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and aqueous solutions of oxalic acid have been used to wash the residue. Only one treatment with any of the mineral acids is required to yield a carbon-free ash, but since these acids alter the composition of the ash, the resulting values though reproducible are different from those obtained when no treatment is used. Since oxalic acid offered no advantage over water, water was chosen. This technique of wetting the carbonaceous residues with water to facilitate burn­ing is simpler than a number of previous methods [1, 5, 6].

Figure 1 shows the effect of using two different periods of heating between water washes. Appar­ently, the use of one-half-hom heating periods reduces the time required for ashing by 50 percent. Further reduction of the heating periods is not helpful.

4. Results

In order to determine the over-all precision of the tests when used over an extended period, duplicate determinations were made daily for 5 to 10 days on samples of GR- S and GR- S latex . . The particular samples of GR- S used were chosen because of their marked tendency to overrun the edge of the cru cible when rapidly ashed wi thout the use of filter paper. The samples of GR- S latex Ll sed were chos('n beca use they characterize differen ces in latex types that might effect either tIle. final results. or the eas.e of testing. Both porcelam and alumlIlum crucibles were used in testing the GR- S rubber samples so that the values obtained might be compared. For further comparison the same rubber samples were tested according to the slow-ashing process [4 , 8] without previous extraction.

The results of these tests are given in tables 1 and 2. An analysis of variance [J 5] macl e of the data

showed a significant, bu t small, day-to-day varia­bility for the tests used on both the rubber and latex. This variability was not sufficiently large to affect appreciably the values for the over-all precision, 8" that is, the standard deviation of a single random determination given in the tables. The values of 8 T

for each of the tests are of the same order of magni­tude as that obtained wh en GR- S is analyzed by the older slow-ashing process. In addition, the data obtained for GR- S rubber indicate at least as good retention of material by the new process as by the old. A similar comparison for GR- S latex cannot be made, since the older slow-ashing methods are not appl icable to this material. Though the ash is not necessarily identical with the inorganic ma­terial originally present in the sample, because of the decomposition of soaps, etc., the residue represents the original adequately for specification purposes.
