£1.6 million raised for the victims of Grenfell Tower fire Tragedy: Grenfell Tower ablaze • Donations and public support continues • PM orders public enquiry into tragedy • Jeremy Corbyn: “we demand answers” Following the Grenfell Tower fire in West Lon- don, JustGiving has announced that an incred- ible £1.6 million has been raised, so far, on the platform to support the victims and their fami- lies making it a record breaking crowd-funding achievement for the people of the UK. As well as the incredible support shown at the scene of the incident in Kensington, by the emergency services and members of the community, there has also been an outpouring of support from the coun- try, as a whole, as people continue to donate to over 250 pages on the site. It has been confirmed that the fire, which took place in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Kensington, West London shortly before 1am yesterday morn- ing has already killed at least 17 residents and more than 30 people remain in hospital – 17 of whom are in a critical condition. However, it is unknown at this time the final num- ber of casualties which looks set to rise as the search for the missing residents continue. It is re- ported that firefighters rescued ‘large numbers’ but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that ‘a lot’ of people were unaccounted for. Eyewitnesses described people trapped in the burn- ing tower screaming for help, shouting for their children to be saved and even jumping from the building to escape the fire. Over forty fire engines containing more than 200 firefighters attended the scene which has been labelled a major incident. The tower contains 120 homes. Prime Minister Theresa May has announced a pub- lic inquiry into Grenfell Tower fire to ensure the ‘terrible tragedy is properly investigated'. The PM said she had heard “heartbreaking stories of the people who were caught up in this terribly, terrible tragedy” and that the victims and their families de- served a full investigation. £1.6 million raised for the victims of Grenfell Tower fire

Tragedy: Grenfell Tower ablaze

• Donations and public support continues• PM orders public enquiry into tragedy• Jeremy Corbyn: “we demand answers”

Following the Grenfell Tower fire in West Lon-don, JustGiving has announced that an incred-ible £1.6 million has been raised, so far, on the platform to support the victims and their fami-lies making it a record breaking crowd-funding achievement for the people of the UK.

As well as the incredible support shown at the scene of the incident in Kensington, by the emergency services and members of the community, there has also been an outpouring of support from the coun-try, as a whole, as people continue to donate to over 250 pages on the site.

It has been confirmed that the fire, which took place in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Kensington, West London shortly before 1am yesterday morn-ing has already killed at least 17 residents and more than 30 people remain in hospital – 17 of whom are in a critical condition.

However, it is unknown at this time the final num-ber of casualties which looks set to rise as the search for the missing residents continue. It is re-ported that firefighters rescued ‘large numbers’ but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that ‘a lot’ of people were unaccounted for.

Eyewitnesses described people trapped in the burn-

ing tower screaming for help, shouting for their children to be saved and even jumping from the building to escape the fire. Over forty fire engines containing more than 200 firefighters attended the scene which has been labelled a major incident. The tower contains 120 homes.

Prime Minister Theresa May has announced a pub-lic inquiry into Grenfell Tower fire to ensure the ‘terrible tragedy is properly investigated'. The PM said she had heard “heartbreaking stories of the people who were caught up in this terribly, terrible tragedy” and that the victims and their families de-served a full investigation.

She also said that every effort would be made to rehouse families displaced by the tragedy locally. “I want to reassure the residents of Grenfell Tower, all of whom are in our thoughts and prayers at the moment. I want to reassure them that the govern-ment will make every effort to ensure that they are rehoused in London, and as close as possible to home.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had called for a full inquiry into the blaze, and Jeremy Cor-byn who visited the scene said, “We will demand and get answers.”

Tom Hardy wanted as Jafar?SOURCES are saying that Tom Hardy is in talks to portray Jafar in Guy Ritchie's Aladdin remake.

It was already a big surprise when Disney an-nounced Richie's involvement in this live-action update of the beloved animated movie, and there are apparently a lot more surprises in store.

Currently Will Smith is also rumored to be in the remake, possibly playing the Genie. Ritchie was recently asked about the possibility of Smith's in-volvement, but the filmmaker just smiled and said that he can't reveal much before saying, "I love Will Smith very much. It would make me very happy to be making it with him."

Which leads us to today's new rumor. The UK pa-per TheSun is reporting that Richie has been in talks with Hardy to play the villain Jafar in the upcoming movie. According to a source close to The Sun (no pun intended), Ritchie is a big fan of Hardy's work. Read what the anonymous source had to say below.

"Guy is a huge fan of Tom's work and securing him would be a major coup. There have been con-versations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he's certainly one of Guy's favored choices. It just depends on schedules whether he'll be able to sign up."

Now it should be noted that TheSun is probably

not the most reliable source, so we'll take this news with a decent grain of salt. Hardy and Ritch-ie do have a history together. Tom Hardy played Handsome Bob in Ritchie's 2008 movie Rockn-

Rolla, which was not a box office smash and has had mixed reviews to say the least. One thing that most critics could agree upon was Hardy's small role in the movie was outstanding. The role so-

Tom Hardy

lidified Hardy's in-demand status that he com-mands today, but will he make a good Jafar in a Guy Ritchie remake of Aladdin? Nonetheless, the thought of seeing Hardy as a villain again is excit-ing on its own.

The anonymous source also revealed that British girl group Little Mix's Jade Thirwall is in talks to play the role of Princess Jasmine. Apparently talks have been going on far quite a while with Thir-wall. The source says that.

"Jasmine is Jade's perfect role, so she's delighted to have got this far in the process."

Again, take this information with a grain of salt. There really is nothing else to go off of except that Thirwall is a huge Disney fan that frequents the amusement park. The same can be said about a lot of people of all ages. But if it does, the rest of the band reportedly has their "fingers crossed" for Thirwall.

Ritchie's Aladdin musical remake appears to be a pretty big gamble on Disney's part, but with the success of the Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast live-action remakes it seems that Disney can do no wrong. Aladdin is expected to begin production soon with a release date to follow soon. Let's just hope it's better than Ritchie's latest movie King Arthur.

Old cedar trees crash down on pathway at Chiswick HouseSNAPPED BRANCHES from two cedar trees fell on the main lawn of Chiswick Park House on Sunday 11th June at 6.50pm. There were no injuries, but a portion of the path-ways behind Chiswick House were cordoned off. Residents experienced sunshine and mild winds of 13 mph, and many took the opportunity to go to the Chiswick Park. Paul Eddison, 30, was visiting the park from South London:

“I was there was an almighty crack and everyone turned to see what it was. We saw a section of the tree come down. I've never seen anything like it.”Jake Lonergan, 26, a park ranger, was first on the scene:“What it looks like is one of these large branches have caught a gust of wind and has been brought down – bringing down another branch.

They're large cedar trees and quite old as well.”The priority for Jake is to quickly re-solve the issue:“I'm going to cordon this area off...Luckily no one was injured. Our Gardens Estate Manager, Geraldine King, is going to come down.”“We're going to cut these into sec-tions, the pieces that have fallen, to remove them and try to clear away. We're going to inspect the trees to see if there's any more damage.”Chiswick Park is home to approxi-mately 50 cedar trees. Gardens Estate Manager, Geraldine, reports that the affected cedar trees were hundreds of years old:“Those cedars were planned in Lord Burlington's time around 1760. When they get to that age, they are renowned now and then for no rea-son to just lose a branch. The last ce-dar that went down was by Stabilee Road and that dropped several limbs in my time and the previous man-ager's time.”

Geraldine said that tree specialists, Gavin Jones Ltd, inspected the trees and confirmed that they were in good shape.

“They look very healthy and we've done an inspection on them today. Where the branches tore was all very clean – it’s just one of those things. That's why we inspect them quite regularly. The trees are inspected an-nually - in particular, the cedars“They're large old trees they're very graceful and beautiful and part of the parks heritage. We do whatever we can to preserve that heritage. Fortu-nately because we inspect our trees regularly, the tress are quite safe. The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust spends about £25,000 a year main-taining trees.”

Several members of staff are first aid-ers and the first responder on site ar-rived within 30 seconds.

Ealing Central and Acton 'no safe seat' says Rupa Huq after victoryAs the most marginal Labour seat in London, Ealing Central and Acton always attracted interest from the media as the easiest seat for the Conservatives to take in a contest that they were expected to walk. The recent general election saw Labour’s Rupa Huq re-elected with a massively increased majority, up to a comfortable 13,807 from 2015’s more nail biting result which saw Labour finish 274 ahead, toppling the Conservatives. Rupa said “Our campaign focused on my record as an MP, the NHS and Brexit and we saw the majority rise 50 times and we took 60% of the vote in the seat.”

She dismissed speculation that the seat had now become “safe” for Labour. “It’s a huge honour and privilege that so many have put their trust in me, but I will continue as an active campaigning MP and certainly not rest on my laurels,” she commented.

Dr Huq spent her final day on the campaign with support from over 1000 volunteers which included high profile names; former Labour Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who flew in from America to Acton Town, columnist and author Owen Jones, comedienne Shap-pi Khorsandi and Dr Huq’s sister, the former Blue Peter presenter, Konnie Huq.

In her victory speech at Ealing Town Hall, Dr Huq thanked her “huge army of volunteers” and put the extraordinary result which “exceeded all expectations” down to not only “the revenge of the remainers” across London, but also a campaign which was fought on the local cuts by the Conservatives to the NHS and Schools. Dr Huq went on to claim that the Prime Minister was now “seriously damaged”.

Ealing Central and Acton, which had been number 2 on the Conserv-atives target list, is now number 145 on the Tory target list for 2022. Rupa Huq

Body Worn Video rolled out in HounslowOfficers from the Borough of Houn-slow will take to the streets this week wearing Body Worn Video (BWV), following the borough's official launch.

Body Worn Video is being issued to 330 of the borough's frontline police officers and Police Community Sup-port Officers (PCSOs).

Additional cameras will also be avail-able for specialist departments.

The cameras have already shown they can help bring speedier justice for vic-tims. They have proved particularly successful in domestic abuse cases where there has been an increase in earlier guilty pleas from offenders who know their actions have been recorded.

BWV will offer greater transparency for those in front of the camera as well as behind it. Londoners can feel reas-sured during their interactions with the police, whilst BWV will also help of-ficers gather evidence and demonstrate their professionalism in the face of the many challenges involved in policing

the Capital.

All footage recorded on BWV is sub-ject to legal safeguards and guidance. The footage from the camera is auto-matically uploaded to secure servers once the device has been docked and flagged for use as evidence at court or other proceedings. Video not retained

as evidence or for a policing purpose is automatically deleted within 31 days.

If the public wish to view footage taken of them they can request, in writing, to obtain it under freedom of information and data protection laws. The request must be within 31 days of the incident unless it has been marked as police evi-

dence and is therefore retained.

The cameras are worn attached to the officer's uniform and do not perma-nently record. This ensures interac-tions with the public are not unneces-sarily impeded. Members of the public are told as soon as practical that they are being recorded. When the camera is recording, it is highly visible with a flashing red circle in the centre of the camera and a frequent beeping noise when it's activated.

Chief Superintendent Raj Kohli, Bor-ough Commander of Hounslow, said:

"I am really looking forward to body worn videos making a real difference to the people of London - helping con-vict criminals, helping protect vulnera-ble people, helping officers in doing an exceptionally difficult job to the best of their ability. The police officers and staff of Hounslow already do a great job - this will make them even better.

"Over the coming months cameras will be issued to all 32 London boroughs and a number of frontline specialist roles, including overt firearms officers. The deployment of all 22,000 cameras will be managed in a phased approach and is anticipated to be complete by the summer."

Appeal after police officer seriously assaulted in BrentfordPolice in Hounslow continue to appeal for wit-nesses and information after a police officer was seriously assaulted.

Following the assault in Brentford, it was estab-lished that the officer's body worn video camera was missing and police are appealing to anyone who may have found it to return it to police.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Flanagan of Hounslow CID who leads the investigation said, "The body worn video camera is a new piece of kit that officers on our borough are wearing. They are encrypted devices the footage cannot be accessed by anyone other than our officers. However, we are obviously keen for the camera to be returned to us and I would ask anyone who has seen it, or has it in their possession, to drop it off at their lo-cal police station."

The incident happened at approximately 21:35hrs on Saturday, 10 June after officers were called to reports of an assault in the vicinity of Boston Manor Road, Brentford.

Two officers drove the scene and a member of the public pointed out a man they believed was in-volved in the fight who was running off down the street. The officers pursued the man and told him to stop - he did not. Both officers got out of their car and attempted to detain the man.

As they did this, a crowd of people gathered and began to act in a hostile manner towards the of-ficers. A male who was part of the crowd, then kicked one of the officers in the face, breaking his nose and fracturing his jaw.

The other officer deployed CS spray to disperse the crowd and support was called to the scene. The injured officer, aged 32, was taken to the West Middlesex Hospital for treatment - he has since been discharged. Following the incident it was established that the officer's body worn video camera was missing.

DCI Flanagan continued, "This was a shocking and cowardly attack on a police officer going about his duty. There were large numbers of peo-ple in Boston Manor Road as there was a music event taking place nearby and I would appeal to anyone who saw this incident to contact police immediately."

Anyone with information is asked to call Houn-slow CID on 020 8247 6224 or 6299 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

You can also tweet information to the Met @MetCC.A 21-year-old man the officers initially detained was arrested for obstructing police and taken to a west London police station. He has been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in early July.

Back Heathrow announce new Executive DirectorBack Heathrow’s new Executive Director has started in his new role by pledging to stand up for residents who desperately want the jobs and ap-prenticeships that will inevitably come from ex-pansion. Southall-born Parmjit Dhanda, who went to school in Hayes and later served as a Hillingdon councillor, MP and Government Minister, says he knows how important Heathrow is for local com-munities and how vital expansion is for residents.

With the general election delivering a hung Parlia-ment, Parmjit also says he is focused on standing up for local people who support expansion and wants to make sure that the Government stays true to its support for a new Heathrow runway.

Back Heathrow Executive Director Parmjit Dhan-da said: “I’m thrilled to be joining this vital cam-paign at such an exciting time.

“I know how important Heathrow is to local people and I’m determined to make sure that the decision-makers in Westminster listen to residents in our local communities, most of whom support a new runway.

“Heathrow expansion will bring new jobs, ap-prenticeships and opportunities to the local area, and I will make sure that the Government remains committed to expanding the UK’s largest port. But

this will not be at any cost. I grew up locally and care deeply about the area so I want to ensure that commitments to the local environment are hon-oured.”

Ruth Cadbury honoured to be re-elected MP for Brentford and IsleworthRuth Cadbury, the Labour Party parliamenta-ry candidate for Brentford and Isleworth, has been re-elected to the seat in the General Elec-tion and has released a full statement on her victory and continuing work. She received 35,364 votes, 57 per cent share of the vote, and beat the Conservative Candidate Mary Macleod by more than 12,000 - increasing La-bour’s majority in this seat from 465.

The turnout in Brentford and Isleworth was 72.4 per cent. The Labour party’s result in B&I mirrored La-bour’s electoral success across London, where the party won back marginal seats including Battersea and Croydon Central and, after a third recount, was declared in the winner in the previously Tory stronghold of Kensington and Chelsea.

Following her re-election, Ruth Cadbury said, “For my vote to increase by 10,000 to over 35,000 means that many local people voted Labour for the first time – I met hundreds of people during the campaign who told me their concerns about austerity and Brexit, and welcomed Labour’s mes-sage of hope, offering clear costed commitments to policies that the country needs.

“Theresa May’s snap election was wholly unnec-essary and was called at a time when the country required stability and unity after the results of the EU Referendum, yet in what she set up as a refer-endum on her leadership, the country called her bluff.

“On the EU, I can assure you that I will fight for

the UK to remain in the single market, for the rights enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, workers ‘ rights, EU regulations on air quality; opposing a hard Brexit every step of the way.

Full story continued on pag“Like many , I am very concerned about the impli-cations of the. Tories doing a deal with the DUP; a party opposed to LGBT rights and to a Woman’s right to choose, who have been embroiled in the bio-fuels scandal yet are climate-change deniers, and who support a hard Brexit.

“During the past two years I have witnessed the devastating effects of the Conservative Govern-ment’s cuts on public services and the impact that this has had on so many constituents. A pursuit of austerity which has had a disastrous effect both locally and nationally: the implementation of Uni-versal Credit, the cuts in funding for the NHS and schools, and the housing crisis. I will continue to stand up for our local NHS services, to oppose swingeing cuts to our schools’ budgets and for truly affordable, decent quality housing. I will continue to prioritise environmental issues and my support for a better NOT bigger Heathrow.

“Following the turbulent and tragic national events that have taken place in Manchester and London in recent weeks, I believe that it is more important than ever to promote values of tolerance, under-standing and social justice. I am proud to be part of, and to represent, a community as diverse as we have here in Hounslow and am committed to standing up for every member of my constituency.

“I would like to thank everyone for the over-whelming support shown me over the past two

Ruth Cadbury Re-Elected MP For Brentford And Isleworthyears and for the support during the election cam-paign. I feel honoured to be re-elected as your MP for the Brentford and Isleworth Constituency and am delighted to have the opportunity to continue the work that I started in 2015 and pledge to repay the trust you have placed in me.

“I look forward to meeting with constituents to

discuss the issues that matter most to you and I hope to see you out and about in Chiswick, Brent-ford, Isleworth, Osterley and Hounslow in the near future.” The Chiswick Herald wishes Ruth every success in her work for Brentford and Isleworth.

HGVs banned from Hammersmith Grove following residents’ safety concernsLARGE LORRIES and trucks have been banned from a residential road in Hammersmith after H&F Council responded to concerns from residents over potential dangers.

Signs have gone up at each end of Hammersmith Grove advising drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) they can no longer use the area as a cut-through.

The ban is part of a suite of measures to improve local safety following joint working between Hammersmith Grove Residents’ Association and Hammer-smith & Fulham Council.

“We listened to our residents in Ham-mersmith Grove when they asked us for help and now we’re taking action,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabi-net Member for Environment, Trans-port and Residents’ Services.

“High volumes of traffic and HGVs have caused misery and concern for these residents for some time now, so we hope these new measures will help them feel safer about the roads near their homes.”

Residents had campaigned for the large trucks to be banned from the road, which many drivers use to cut through from the north of the borough to the

south.

The bulky size and wide turning cir-cles of the trucks had caused residents to fear they might lead to an accident,

with many motorists being directed down Hammersmith Grove by their satellite navigation systems.

New bell bollards were recently in-

stalled at the junction with Trussley Road to prevent HGVs mounting the pavement when turning and new ‘raised entries’ will be installed at each end of Hammersmith Grove in the au-

Fuller’s calls for clarity on EU staff The boss of Chiswick brewer Fuller’s warned of Brexit-induced recruitment pressures the business is facing, adding to a list of headwinds already rocking the pubs sector.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Simon Emeny said “Non-British EU staff form a really important part of our workforce, and many have invested years of their lives in the business."

“It is really disappointing that a year on since the referendum they have no assurances about their future in this country.”

The pubs chief, behind boozers such as Theresa May’s Sonning local, The Bull Inn and The Red Lion in Westminster, urged the government to give guarantees so “these people can continue to live here” after Britain leaves the EU.

He added that his Chiswick-headquartered firm is helping around 200 staff, including managers and chefs, to apply for permanent residency here.

Fuller’s, which runs 388 sites, also noted cost pressures from business rates and the apprentice-ship levy.

But Emeny was more upbeat as he revealed sales jumped 12% to £392 million in the 53 weeks to April 1.

Sales were partly lifted thanks to more tourists in London following the referendum, and demand for its new London Pride Unfiltered product.

Pre-tax profit was up 2% to £39.9 million.

The first nine weeks of the new financial year have been “very strong”, the company said.

Emeny said: “While we are cautious and realistic about the future, we are well placed to… recruit and develop the best team members and reward our shareholders.”

It is upping the annual dividend by 5% to 18.8p.

A note from broker Numis said: “We believe Full-er’s market positioning and well-invested estate leave it better placed to deal with rising costs than its competitors.”tumn.

H&F Council will be contacting sat-nav providers once the ban goes live to advise them to update their maps.

Hounslow Friends of Faith has been working, for a number of years, to bring the faith communi-ties together through local social, charitable and educational activities. Sharing festivals and meals plays an important part in our activities. A highlight of the annual calendar is the Walk of Peace and Friendship, which this year is centred on the Brentford and Chiswick areas, with visits to four places of worship.

Council recruiting for shared lives schemeEaling Council’s Shared Lives scheme matches adults with learning and phys-ical difficulties with people who can provide at-home placements.

Thirteen adults currently benefit from the scheme. Seven with local families full-time as an alternative to living in a care home and the remaining six use the scheme for overnight or short term respite care or support in the commu-nity.

Shared Lives carers who provide long term support are paid between £345.97 and £454.15 a week. Short term care is paid on either a daily or hourly rate.

Carers receive regular support and training from Ealing Council and no special qualifications are needed, how-ever people must be willing to share their homes and devote the time and energy needed to care for an adult with additional needs. The philosophy be-hind Shared Lives is that the cared-for person becomes part of the family.

Those who would like to find out more are invited to speak with officers from Ealing Council who will be available at two separate locations to provide infor-mation and advice during Shared Lives week (17-25 June):

· Job fair at Southall Dominion Centre

on Tuesday, 20 June, 11am-4pm

· A stand at Perceval House, Ealing on Wednesday, 21 June, 9.30am-3pm.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor, cabinet mem-ber for health and adults services, said: “Everyone involved in Shared Lives says what a profound and positive dif-ference it has made to their lives. The alternative for most of the adults that use the scheme is a residential care home, so they appreciate the extra choice and independence that they get from being part of a family. And carers consistently tell us how much they per-sonally and emotionally benefit from sharing their homes in this way.

“We carefully match people and since Shared Lives began over 20 years ago there hasn’t been a breakdown in place-ment. I would encourage anyone who is interested in finding out more to come along and get more information or get in touch with our team at the council.”

Thousands turnout for Green Days weekend and Start of Bedford Park Festival

LOCAL NEWSLOCAL NEWS

Thousands of people enjoyed the sunshine and entertainment at the Green Days weekend which opened the Golden Jubilee Bedford Park Festival.

The Festival was opened by Maggie Philbin OBE who judged the fancy dress competition and on the Sunday Sir Peter Blake made the draw for a signed print of his collage of 55 entertainers in front of the Empire Theatre, Chiswick. He said he had been at the first Green Day in June 1967, pop-ping in when he happened to be walking by.

More than a dozen other veterans of the first Green Day were there too. “We were very lucky with the

wonderful weather this year and it was undoubt-edly the best Green Days ever” said Father Kevin Morris, vicar of St Michael & All Angels Church, which has organised the Bedford Park Festival for the past 50 years.

The Festival continues for another week, with lots more events including a jazz concert by Kate Dimbleby on Friday June 16th, the opera Cosi fan tutte on Saturday 17th, the Alan Ayckbourn comedy Relatively Speaking for four nights at the Tabard Theatre (June 21st to 24th), the Festival Mass and Bedford Park Open Gardens on Sunday June 24th.

Kew Gardens to host Magical Summer Shows

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew will be playing host to fairies, Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad this summer as part of a series of enchanting live, outdoor theatrical performances.

The idyllic grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site will play host to two fun family shows; ‘The Wind in the Willows’, 22 July to 28 August, and ‘The Dream Fairies – Adventure Through Bubble Land’, 29 July to 28 August.

Tickets for the Australian Shakespeare Company productions, which run daily from Tuesday to Friday with two per-formances on Saturday and Sunday, also include daytime admission to the Gardens on the day of the performance.

The Wind in the Willows is Kenneth Grahame's classic story of life on the riverbank. A rollicking yet gentle ad-venture with best friends Ratty, Mole, Badger, Otter and, of course, the arro-gant, vain and hilarious Toad.

This critically acclaimed outdoor thea-tre production, set against the magi-cal backdrop of Kew Gardens’ lake, is packed with much-loved colourful characters, music, song and laughter.

A favourite of adults and children of all ages, this is interactive theatre at its very best.

In The Dream Fairies, the adventurous Honeysuckle unexpectedly meets the fairies from Shakespeare’s A Midsum-mer Night’s Dream.

Honeysuckle has lost her wings and the Dream Fairies – cheeky Mustardseed, fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb and sweet Peaseblossom – have flown off course on their way to Fairy Land.

Together, with the help of all the little elves and fairies, they go on an adven-ture to find Honeysuckle’s wings and the special map to guide them home.

Suitable for children aged three to six, this production is an interactive ad-venture full of sing-along, clap-along songs plus bubbles and acrobatics! Children are invited to come dressed as their favourite fairies or elves.

“We’re delighted to be staging these two fantastical family productions in the heart of our beautiful Gardens,” said Adam Farrar, Head of Commercial Activities at RGB, Kew.

“Both shows make the very most of their incredible surroundings with the lake as the perfect setting for Wind in the Willows and the Temple of Bel-lona and Berberis Dell providing an appropriately magical location for The Dream Fairies,” he added.

The Australian Shakespeare Company presents exciting outdoor adaptations of classical texts in botanical gardens and other beautiful locations around the world.

To celebrate his long-standing con-nection with Hammersmith, a life-size commemorative statue of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown has been unveiled on the riverfront at Distillery Wharf in Hammersmith.

The statue’s completion follows a three year plan with local businesses, indi-vidual supporters and friends of The Hammersmith Society raising nearly £40,000 to honour the great British landscape architect.

Capability Brown spent thirteen years living with his family in Hammersmith between leaving Stowe and being ap-pointed Royal Gardener with a grace-and-favour house at Hampton Court Palace. During his Hammersmith years he designed many of his finest land-scapes.

Some of his most famous projects in-clude Harewood House, Chatsworth, Bowood House and Blenheim Palace. His notable style which was regarded as at the forefront of fashion in the middle part of the eighteenth century, brought us many beautiful landscaped parks and gardens including Richmond Park, Kew Gardens, Syon House which are all located to the West of London.

Marc von Grundherr, Director at Ben-

ham & Reeves Lettings who were do-nators of the statue and have a branch at Distillery Wharf Fulham Reach commented “it was a great honour for us to be one of the first donators to-wards this national statue commemo-rating the tercentenary of Capability Brown. His unparalleled landscaping legacy of more than 150 parks and gar-dens across England is most definitely worthy of this permanent memorial in Hammersmith”.

Laury Dizengremel, international sculptor and artist-in-residence at Bel-voir Castle, was commissioned to carry out the statue and was in attendance at the unveiling along with the Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor Michael Cartwright.

The statue unveiling was performed by art historian Sir Roy Strong CH and witnessed by the many generous sup-porters and corporate contributors who made the statue possible.

Single invoice finance: giving cash to SMEs and sole traders, only when they need it and with no security requiredDr P Singh, founder of Chiswick based company, Cash for Invoices Limited, explains the use and benefit of single invoice finance to businesses. What is a trade invoice? Invoices are bills sent by a business to the buyer (called the debtor in ac-counting jargon) of its products or services. The company expects to be paid on the payment date stated on the bill, e.g., 30 or 60 days after the in-voice date.

Selling a single invoice to Cash for Invoices Lim-ited The business might be unable to wait for the debtor to pay; perhaps it needs cash immediate-ly to pay its supplier or HMRC. To raise cash it could sell its invoice to Cash for Invoices Limited before the invoice’s payment date. For a 30-day £1000 invoice, it could get up to £975 of the in-voice value, the £25 difference being Cash for In-voices Limited’s fee.

Non-recourse finance plus a retention Cash for

Invoices Limited will not require the seller to buyback the invoice if the debtor fails to pay the invoice on its due date. The sale is therefore non-recourse, however, Cash for Invoices Limited could retain up to £100 (using the example above) of the invoice from the purchase price so pay up to £875 upfront. The retention of £100 would be paid when the debtor pays the invoice. No security, no commitment, and no ongoing fees Many conven-tional factoring facilities will: commit a business to sell all of its sales invoices, charge a multitude of fees, and require security, so factoring is con-sidered by many businesses as an unattractive source of finance.

Cash for Invoices Limited’s single invoice finance service is a refreshing alternative to conventional factoring. It does not require a commitment from

the seller to sell any of its invoices, and it charges just one fee, so no fees for servicing, renewal or exit because there is no facility between it and the seller. No security required from the seller such as a debenture or personal guarantee. Cash for Invoices Limited’s single invoice finance service therefore frees businesses of many of the hidden costs and constraints of conventional invoice fi-nancing

Financing for a broad range of organisations

Cash for Invoices Limited’s single invoice finance service is available to a broad range or organisa-tions, including sole traders, limited partnerships, charities, social enterprises, and educational es-tablishments. Whether a potential sale is complet-ed or not will be determined, to a large extent, by the credit risk of the debtor concerned.

Competitive cost of finance

The fee currently charged by Cash for Invoices Limited for single invoice finance is just 8p per £100 of invoice sold, per day it remains unpaid, excluding VAT. For example, a £5000 invoice due to be paid in 30 days would incur a single fee of just £125 plus VAT of £25 Part II will describe how Cash for Invoices Limited can buy a com-pany's supplier's invoice and allow the company to pay Cash for Invoices Limited later than the invoice's due date for payment. Supplier invoice purchasing therefore gives the company more time to pay a supplier invoice.

Man jailed for stabbing Good SamaritanA man, who stabbed a good Samaritan after he came to the aid of a female passenger, has been sentenced for attempted murder.

Abtidoon Diriye, 21 (01.01.96) of no fixed abode was found guilty of attempted murder at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday, 11 May after an eight day trial.

He was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment at the same court on Friday, 9 June.

The court heard how on 15 October 2016 at 04:47hrs the victim, aged 37, was travelling on the lower deck of a N207 bus in Acton when he observed Diriye get on the bus. Diriye stood in the doorway of the bus and told the bus driver to wait for another man.

The bus remained stationary for about five to six minutes whilst Diriye became argumentative with the driver. At this point a female passenger came down from the upper deck and approached the driver. She informed him it was really late and she along with other passengers needed to get home.

The remark made by the female passenger caused Diriye (still insisting for the bus driver to wait) to react aggressively towards her. At this point, the

victim fearing for the woman's safety intervened.

He pushed Diriye in the chest to move him away.

Diriye immediately came back towards the victim and a scuffle took place. The woman who he had initially tried to help got in-between them to break up the fight.

As the bus moved away, Diriye was still shout-ing and trying to get past the woman to get to the victim.

A few minutes later the bus arrived at a bus stop

in Acton and the victim decided to get off the bus to get away from Diriye. As the victim left the bus Diriye followed him off.

Diriye followed the victim from the bus along Acton Vale High Street. Diriye continued to fol-low him for 15 minutes as he walked down the street towards the junction with Winchester Road. There was no-one else in the street at the time and the victim desperately tried to find a shop to seek refugee.

Diriye called out to the victim asking him if he had a lighter for a cigarette. The victim turned around and saw Diriye run towards him. As soon as Di-riye caught up with the victim he was stabbed four times in the abdomen.

The victim tried to get away by running down Winchester Road, whilst Diriye continued chasing after him. About 50 metres further down Winches-ter Road the victim collapsed to the ground.

He was again stabbed whilst he lay on the ground. The victim tried to grab the knife to stop him from being stabbed further. He tried to run again to get away, eventually falling over further down the road.

He was stabbed again in the lower side of his back whilst he was on the ground before Diriye made off.

The victim managed to flag down a passing bus and the driver called the emergency services. CCTV of the entire incident from the initial al-tercation on the bus to the victim being followed and stabbed was retrieved by officers. Diriye was identified as the man who stabbed the victim.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Harvey, Ealing Bor-ough CID said: "Whilst we would not want mem-bers of the public to put themselves in harm's way, the victim's heroic actions in stopping a woman from coming to serious harm at a great cost to himself is both courageous and brave.

"The victim was so badly injured by Diriye that he lost two litres of blood and had to have two sec-tions of his bowel removed. He nearly died and in total he received five stab wounds and a number of lacerations. Fortunately he has made a full physi-cal recovery, but the mental scars still remain.

"The victim's public-spirited intervention in trying to stop these violent men should be praised. I am pleased that Diriye has been made to pay for his actions with lengthy custodial sentences."

Bank surprises with interest rate voteUK interest rates have been kept on hold at 0.25%, but in a surprise move three of the Bank of Eng-land's rate-setting committee backed a rate rise.

The 5-3 vote by the Bank's policymakers was the closest for a rate rise since 2007, and comes with inflation close to a four-year high of 2.9%.

Inflation is now well above the Bank's target rate of 2%.

News of the vote pushed the pound up by more than a cent against the dollar, although it fell back later.

Ian McCafferty, Michael Saunders and Kristin Forbes were the three members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) who voted for an in-crease. Ms Forbes had been the sole vote in favour of a rise at the MPC's previous two meetings.

However, the decision of Mr Saunders and Mr McCafferty to back an increase as well surprised economists.

"The more hawkish tone of the MPC appears to reflect some concern about inflation - which has accelerated faster than it expected over recent months and is now forecast to exceed 3% this

year - as well as the strength of employment that is continuing to erode slack in the labour market," Capital Economics said.

Hargreaves Lansdown senior economist Ben Brettell said it appeared that the "willingness of the MPC to 'look through' higher inflation and leave rates on hold is wearing thin, and if inflation continues to surprise we could see higher rates by the end of the summer".

Sterling, which had been trading below $1.27 be-fore the minutes were released, surged to almost $1.28 in response, while the FTSE 100 share in-dex was down more than 1%.

Antarctic base waits on 'Halloween' ice crackRestricted operations at the British Ant-arctic Survey's Halley station may have to continue for some time to come.

The base, which ordinarily stays open year-round, is currently closed because of uncertainty over a developing crack in the ice shelf on which it sits.

Scientists are using automated ground instruments and satellites to monitor the fissure from afar, and plan to reoc-cupy Halley from November.

Whether that is just for the length of the Summer season, though, is unclear.Image copyright BASImage caption Halley serves as a sup-port link to exploration in the Antarctic interior. It is also renowned for its at-mospheric research

"That decision will have to be based on our observations; and these processes, because they are ice-related, are often painstakingly slow," BAS glaciologist Jan De Rydt told BBC News.

The UK has had a permanent presence on the Brunt Ice Shelf since 1956, and scientists would be loath to see their operations routinely reduced to just a few months a year...

The oldest living thing on EarthA well-known way of measuring the age of a tree is by counting the rings in its trunk: one ring per year of growth. It's a process known as dendrochronol-ogy and only works for certain types of tree that have an annual growth spurt.

The obvious problem is that counting rings normally involves cutting down the tree.

Arboriculturalists get around this by using an increment borer, a drill that al-lows them to take out a core, and count the rings without fatally damaging the tree.

A team of researchers in the US keeps a list, called the Old List, of officially dated ancient trees.

They’ve found a sacred fig tree in Sri

Lanka that is at least 2,222 years old.

There’s a Patagonian cypress tree in Chile which, at 3,627 years old, is as old as Stonehenge.

A Great Basin bristlecone pine in California’s White Mountains named Methuselah comes in at 4,850 years old. But the oldest tree on the list, an unnamed bristlecone pine from the same location, has a core suggesting it is 5,067 years old.

This time-worn tree has lived through the rise and fall of the Ro-man Empire. It was already estab-lished when the Ancient Egyptians started building pyramids.

Dogs and wolves share sense of fair playThe sense of fair play is an impor-tant human trait, but new research suggests that it's a key behaviour for dogs and wolves as well.In tests, if one animal was given a more substantial reward when per-forming a task, the other one downed tools completely. It had been felt that this aversion to unfairness was something that dogs had learned from humans.Scientists have long recognised that what they term a "sensitivity to ineq-uity", or a sense of fairness, played an important role in the evolution of co-operation between humans. Basi-cally, if others treated you badly, you quickly learned to stop working with them. Experiments in 2008 demonstrated that dogs also had this sensitivity. This new study shows that it's also deeply ingrained in wolves. The scientists tested similarly raised dogs and wolves that lived in packs. Two animals of each species were placed in adjacent cages, equipped with a buzzer apparatus. When the dog or wolf pressed it with their paw, both animals got a reward on some occasions. Other times, the dog or wolf doing the task got nothing while the partner did.The key finding was that when the partner got a high value treat, the animal doing the task refused to con-tinue with it.

Do we want people to lie to us?

LAST WEEK I had a go at painting the amazing reticulated tracery of one of the windows of St Nicholas Church. It’s only the sixth oil painting I’ve attempted in my entire life and friends, family – and even passers by – told me that it is good. Which is nice of them. But, of course, I appreciate it takes many years and many hundreds of paintings to become a truly skilled artist.

So it’s sweet of people to ‘lie’, if you like, with the good intention of encouraging me to keep going with this hobby. And it’s hard to see very devastating consequences of this untruth. I guess there’s the risk I might get overexcited and try submitting my painting to the RA for the Summer Exhibition – which would result in the disappointment of rejection. Or the risk that I might believe I can become a professional painter – but I’d have to be very deluded to think that.

So sometimes lying can be harmless, even kind. But, on the whole, we do not like people lying to us.

Or do we?

I was wondering this, as I reflected last week on the recent election campaign.

Most people would say that politicians lie and that they lie even more during election campaigns. And we don’t like this.

But do we actually encourage our politicians to lie?

In this campaign, both major parties seemed to be falling over themselves to promise all sorts of benefits – payment of tuition fees, more money for the NHS, social care and policing.

And, of course, we do need to find the money for things that are essential – which includes many of these things – and I hope and pray that the terrible tragedy of the Grenfell fire had nothing to do with cuts that have compromised safety.

Nonetheless, it seemed strange that, during the election campaign, no one wanted to talk about how we might, as a country, seek to ‘live within our means.’ Although the Tories are portrayed as always wanting to cut public services, even they were planning to raise a further £100billion in tax and a similar amount in debt to fund higher spending.

And we like to hear this. Whether we vote Labour or Tory. We like to hear that the government will spend more on all sorts of things – which clearly have benefit and many of which we do really need. But no one wants to think about how we afford all this.

It’s a bit like parents who get themselves into terrible debt at Christmas time – borrowing at extortionate rates to buy the things their children want - because they love their children and don’t want to admit they can’t afford the presents they want.

It seems that, as a country, we don’t want to admit there are things we can’t afford, that there are hard choices to be made, that borrowing more and more money may not turn out to be such a good idea in the long run.

But because politicians know this, we effectively give them no choice but to lie – to avoid really addressing truthfully the difficult choices they should be helping us to make.

However things settle down after this recent election, our national debt is about 90% of GDP and we add to it every year – we never balance our books and even the Tories have now given up any hope of doing this for at least another 15 years.

Maybe we can just go on and on indefinitely borrowing and spending money we don’t have and are not earning. I’m not an economist. And I certainly don’t want cuts to truly essential services or compromises about safety. But it would have been good to have heard at least some of our politicians address this unwelcome subject.

Similarly, on the subject of climate change and other very important environmental issues.

We moan at our politicians for not telling the truth. But when we so clearly don’t want to hear the truth and won’t give our votes to those who tell the truth (if it means any sacrifices), we will have to go on being lied to. And hoping it doesn’t matter.

The Church of St. Bunnies’

(Some people might say this is a metaphor for the Church of England. But I couldn’t possibly comment!!)

At the Church of St Bunnies’the meetings are funny.Let us eavesdrop and see what goes on!

*****************

Here comes hedgehog over the hillbearing his briefcase on top of his quills“Good morning rabbit”, he cheerfully callsas they turn up togetherat St Bunnies’ Church Hall.

A pastoral ‘pastoral committee’ no less,if they’d just work together, it would really be blessed.

So they all tripped in,one at a time. There was hedgehogand rabbit, looking sublime. Then ferret and moleand newt and toad, who was all out of breath, cause he’d run down the road. And finally fox,who was also the chair, which rabbit and toadthought was very unfair.

So well attended, these Church meetings are.And all of them desperately trying to be star!

Fox brings out the agenda, thankfully short, for people will talk far more than they ought!

But weasel is cleverand through his endeavourhe slips one in at the end.And all had the hopethey’d be able to copeif this started a terrible trend!

But rat had a dreamfor a hare-brained schemewhich he’d told several times before. So half an hour laterthis great hot potater was put on ice once more.

CHISWICK POET

Rev Martine OborneSt Michael’s Church , Elmwood Road, Chiswick.

Then it’s cleaning the guttersand mending the roof. And poor bat has gone battyand cat stays aloof.

Now item 4 toad deplores;and is ever so desperate to head for the door. But mole and ferretgo rabbitting onabout plans for refurbishmentand singing of songs.

Then vole interrupts to tell of his scheme,to use all the Church funds to clean up the stream. But that causes uproarand a terrible dinand hedgehog gets up and boldly chips in,“but there are poor folk out therewith whom we should sharenot squander on waterthat’s very unfair.”

So what should they do?Oh what a furore.Nobody there was certain or sure, till up piped hamsterwith a mischievous grin,“Let’s get on the prayer lineand see if he’s in!”

But three hours laterand no let up it seems. And poor mouse is tiredand just wants to scream.

So round and round in circles they went. But at least, it seemsthey had all given ventto the righteous feelingsthey all had in store. But with every minute it got nearer to war.

But fox he was craftyand certainly not daft, he.So he called for peace in the ranks“Let’s remember we’re brothersLet’s love one another…”and for this they all gave great thanks.

So their hearts they did blend,as their love they did send, and they gave one another a kiss. And as fox said a prayerfrom his uncomfortable chair, the meeting it ended in bliss!

The psychology of cleaningDR. BECKMANN REVEALS THE EFFECT OF LIVING IN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT ON YOUR MIND

Whether your home is clean and tidy or not has a huge bearing on your mood, productivity and mental well-being.

Mess and clutter can cause sadness, arguments and have an impact on our social lives. Cleaning and laundry ex-pert Dr. Beckmann has put the psy-chology of cleaning under the micro-scope and revealed the extent to which mess makes us morose and cleanliness means comfort.

Don’t mess with your moodA recent Dr. Beckmann survey indi-cated that the levels of mess and clut-ter around the home is a key dictator of our mood - some 90% of Brits feel that mess makes them unproductive, or worse still, unhappy. Only one in 10 Brits are oblivious to their surroundings and don’t feel the link between mess and mood.

An untidy house also impedes our will-ingness to socialise, which in turn can cause loneliness – more than half of those polled by Dr. Beckmann (54%) said they have, at some point, cancelled

plans to host because their home wasn’t pristine.

Share the loveMess causes arguments – seven in 10 Brits ‘frequently’ argue with a person they cohabit with about household chores and more than half of people said the kitchen is where most argu-ments occur.

The most common household chores that cause friction are unloading the dishwasher and taking out the bins.

Sweat it upThe physical act of cleaning can provide great mental health benefits because of the endorphins that are released by working up a sweat. Individual clean-ing tasks such as vacuuming, ironing and gardening can burn between 150 and 300 calories – equivalent to a Zum-ba class! So if you’re looking to do a big clean in one day you could be burn-ing over 2000 calories. Core tasks for burning the most calories include wash-ing up, cleaning windows and mopping and sweeping.

Live productivelyAccording to some scientific studies, the way we keep our environment re-flects our state of mind, which impacts

our productivity. People surrounded by tidy spaces tend to get more done, whereas clutter and disorganisation in the home act as visual distractions, meaning we are less productive. To

make matters worse, mess breeds mess, as we are less likely to find the moti-vation to clean up when surrounded by clutter.

Do you sometimes feel like you’re tired of all the modern clothes? You have a closet full casual and comfortable things, but sometimes you just want more. You’re sick of jeans and T-shirts and if you look at another pair of sneakers you’re going to die of boredom? Do you wish you could just wear beautiful

long flowing dresses like a princess? Well today we thought we’d indulge you in your fantasy and show you a couple of princess-worthy gowns you’ll want to wear. We can’t promise they’re practical, but hey, a girl can dream…

1. Emerald Green These gorgeous emerald green gowns would look especially stunning on a dark haired or ginger beauties. They’re just the epitome of elegance, don’t you think?

2. Ruby RedFor a lasting impression – red is the best choice. Look at these incredible red gowns, they will make you feel like a real queen. These just scream “royal”.

3. Shimmery GoldA gown in a golden shade can do magical things to your complexion and make you feel like a true princess. Especially if it’s decorated with gemstones.

Cameron Burgess leaves Fulham for Scunthorpe UnitedScunthorpe have signed central defender Cam-eron Burgess from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract and becomes the Iron's first signing of the summer.

He has Sky Bet League One experience having had loan spells last season at Oldham and Bury, making a total of 41 appearances, and Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander is looking forward to helping Burgess take the next step in his career.

"Cameron played a full season last year out on loan, and we know a lot about him. He's a player who is desperate to kick his career on now," Alex-ander told the club's official website.

"He's been out on loan from Fulham and wants to go out and be his own man, and find the best club

to do that. After speaking to him on a few occa-sions, we've all decided this is the best club for him to do that.

"We're delighted to get him on board and he's a lad who's already proven how good he is. He has lots more potential and we feel we can improve him here. He can certainly play a massive part in what we do in the future."

Everton encouraged as Josh Bowler rejects new QPR dealEverton have received fresh encouragement in their pursuit of Josh Bowler after the teenager re-jected QPR's offer of a new contract, Sky sources understand.

Sky sources reported earlier this month that the Toffees were preparing a second offer for the 18-year-old after seeing an initial bid of £1.5m rising to £3m turned down.

Bowler only signed professional terms in Febru-ary before making his first team debut in Rang-ers' 4-0 defeat at Norwich on the final day of the Championship season.Rangers are trying hard to keep the talent in west London and are attempting to do so with promises of more first-team opportunities.

However, Sky Sports News HQ understands Bowler looks increasingly likely to move to Goodison Park to join Ronald Koeman's efforts to assemble some of the finest young British talents in the Premier League.

Bowler joined Rangers in 2013 after being re-leased by Fulham.

Brentford's Jota attracting interest from Everton, West Ham, Newcastle

Everton, West Ham and Newcastle have expressed an interest in Brentford attacker Jota, according to Sky sources.

The Spaniard will only leave the Bees for a Pre-mier League club and Burnley and Swansea sent scouts to watch him towards the end of last sea-son.

The 25-year-old is about to enter the last year of his contract - a year-long extension the club re-cently triggered - and he would be available for around £8m.

The Bees are open to negotiating a new contract with Jota, but are yet to hold talks on the subject and are aware he wants to play in the top flight.

And Brentford are equally as prepared to let his contract run down if no Premier League club match his valuation.

Jota joined the Bees from Celta Vigo in 2014 and thrived under former boss Mark Warburton, but became unsettled because of family reasons the following year, and left on an 18-month loan to Eibar.

Brentford recalled him in January because he was not getting many first-team minutes, and he scored 12 goals in 27 appearances, helping the Bees to a mid-table finish during he second half of the campaign.

Nico Yennaris signs new four-year contract with BrentfordNico Yennaris has signed a new con-tract with Brentford that will keep him at Griffin Park until 2021.

The 24-year-old midfielder was an ev-er-present for the Bees in the Sky Bet Championship last season, and scored six goals to help Brentford to a 10th-placed finish.

Brentford head coach Dean Smith said: "We are really pleased that Nico has agreed the contract extension. He is becoming an integral part of the team, as his appearances last season have shown."

"He is continuing to improve in all as-pects of his game and is becoming an accomplished goal scoring midfielder."

Yennaris has made over 80 appear-ances for Brentford since joining from Arsenal in 2014.

However, Yennaris, who played 10 times for England at youth levels, took his time breaking into the first team, and was sent on loan to Wycombe for part of the 2014/5 season.

But since the middle of the 2015/16 campaign, Yennaris has been a regular feature in the centre of midfield for the Bees.

Alan McCormack To Join Luton TownLuton have snapped up midfielder Alan McCormack from Sky Bet Champion-ship side Brentford on a free transfer. The 33-year-old's deal with Brentford is set to expire at the end of June and the Hatters have moved quickly to agree a contract with the midfielder, who will drop two divisions to join his new side.McCormack played 12 times for the Bees in the Championship this sea-

son, and has been a regular in his four seasons at the club - which included a promotion campaign from League One in 2014.Luton manager Nathan Jones told the club website: "He's a wonderful sign-ing, he has come from a Championship side, so it shows what we are looking to do. He is the type of player we have been looking for, we are really pleased to have him.

"With everyone we bring in, we try to see if they have got promotions on their CVs, if they know what it's like to play in high pressured games."McCormack added: "As soon as I met Nathan he made me believe in the di-rection the club is going, a similar feel to how Brentford were running things and very much going in the right direc-tion if you continue to work that way."
