Lights twinkling, choruses singing, age-old crafts and artisans beckoningenjoy the warmth, tradition and history of Bavaria and Austria this holiday season

Treasures at Christkindlmarkt This year, step out in the tradition of Old Europe to promenade cobbled streets and decorated squares. Enjoy the twinkling lights and warmth of artisans and merchants in bus-tling open-air marketplaces. Browse quaint, wooden stalls for fine crafts and unique, high quality goods—blown glass ornaments, music boxes, hand-carved toys, nutcrack-ers, cuckoo clocks, jewelry, and more—while learning about their connections to age-old customs and traditions.

The Orbridge difference During these ‘eight days of Christmas,’ Orbridge selects four of the most beloved Christmas market towns for a comfortably-paced, delightfully atmospheric journey. A minimum of travel time allows for relaxed exploration of the markets. Centrally-located, first class accommodations are secured to keep you close to the action. And, you can depend on your top-quality Orbridge Guide to enrich your experiences with stories, enter-taining details and informative discussions.

Visit the storied landmarks of Munich, Inns-bruck, Salzburg, and Vienna, delving into the history and culture of these majestic cities. Marvel at the beauty of the Bavarian Alps as you journey through a winter wonderland of picturesque villages, mountains, and lakes. Visit Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg and per-haps attend a concert performance in Vienna. Be sure to sample traditional holiday treats like Lebkuchen, Sachertorte, and Glühwein—spiced and mulled “glow wine.”

The afternoon is yours to explore the Munich Christmas Market at your own pace and sample tradition-al seasonal delicacies like Lebkuchen and Glühwein. (B)

Day 4: Innsbruck and the AlpsJourney across the border to Innsbruck, nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, which served as the seat of

the imperial court of Maximilian I at the end of the 15th century. Stroll through the quaint, medieval lanes of the Old Town to the Golden Roof, constructed for the Em-peror in 1494. Enjoy browsing beautifully decorated stalls of the local Christmas market, and perhaps a leisurely lunch, before making the scenic drive to Salzburg. (B, D)

Day 5: Festive SalzburgThe majestic alpine scenery surrounding Salzburg pro-vides a stunning backdrop for the Baroque architecture of its well-preserved Old Town. A walking tour includes stops at exquisite Mirabell Palace Gardens, St. Peter’s

Steeped in Old World tradition, the festive open-air Christ-mas Markets (Christkindlmarkt) found throughout Germany and Austria trace their roots to the 14th century, when farm-ers, tradesmen, and artisans would meet around town square churches during the Advent season to sell and exchange homemade goods. Christkindlmarkt translates literally to mean “Christ child market,” and today rustic timber booths draped with fragrant evergreen boughs and twinkling lights fill cobblestone town squares.

Occupied by artists and vendors selling high quality, original handcrafted goods—both traditional and contemporary styles in glass, wood, metal, wool, and more— the fragrant smells of gingerbread and roasting sausages drift through the brisk air as shoppers amble past, transporting visitors back in time to the yesteryear of a bustling outdoor marketplace.
