DEAR COLLECTORSLet’s catch up

What a whirlwind it’s been! You’ve probably noticed in the news that Canada Post has been busy unveiling stamps from coast to coast. Since April, we’ve launched our joint issue with La Poste of France for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, our F1™ in Canada issue, our second set of Star Trek™ stamps, and our Eid stamp – the first of three issues focusing on multicultural celebrations. In addition, there were eight more on-site launches – and a virtual one – as we crossed the country, telling the nation’s stories through our 10-stamp Canada 150 issue. The response has been phenomenal, and we couldn’t be prouder of our role in the Canada 150 celebrations.

But now it’s time to catch up with you. We’ve mentioned the special CANADA 150 features added to every 2017 issue (with the exception of the Canada 150 stamps) and hope you’ve been taking a

closer look at each stamp to see how many you can spot. In this issue of Details, we have a special photo spread showing you the features you’ll find on the stamps we’ve released so far. If any remain elusive, don’t worry – all will be revealed, eventually.

Happy Canada 150, happy summer and happy collecting!

PS. Have some of your issues of Details looked different? Rest assured, it’s the same content – but we’ve had to make a few changes to accommodate this year’s program.

NOTICE

In the French text of the F1 in Canada 50th anniversary OFDC featuring Gilles Villeneuve, regretfully, there is an error in the biographical information. The French text erroneously claimed that Berthierville, Quebec, was the race car driver’s place of birth. This information has been corrected and a reprint was initiated, affecting three products: the individual Gilles Villeneuve OFDC (414044132), the F1 in Canada pack of five OFDCs (414042132) and the Villeneuve framed collectible (342160). We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. The new product numbers are above in brackets.

On July 4, Canada Post will issue the final set of stamps in the five-year Canadian Photography series, coinciding with Canada’s 150th. The series showcases some of the best photographers and photography our country has produced over the last 150 years.

Says designer Stéphane Huot, “It was a great privilege and a real pleasure to work on this series from start to finish. I discovered great artists and photographers who made a real impact on the history of Canadian photography. It is definitely one of my proudest philatelic achievements.”

Closing the series are five stunning shots: (1) Claire Beaugrand-Champagne’s Ti-Noir

Lajeunesse, The Blind Violinist, Disraeli, Quebec, 1972 (Beaugrand-Champagne was Quebec’s first female press photographer). (2) Robert Bourdeau’s Ontario, Canada, 1989. (3) Gilbert Duclos’ Enlacées, Montréal, 1994 (Duclos was a letter carrier and truck driver for Canada Post in the 1970s and the man behind the image of Oscar Peterson that graced our first stamp featuring a living Canadian, in 2005). (4) Samuel McLaughlin’s Construction of the Parliament Buildings, Centre Block, circa 1862 (McLaughlin was Canada’s first official photographer). (5) William James Topley’s Sir John A. Macdonald, circa 1883.

Following on the tail feathers of last year’s issue, this new flock of stamps continues the Birds of Canada series with five more provincial and territorial representatives from across the country. These avian emblems include the stately great gray owl (Manitoba), a silent and deadly hunter; the imposing gyrfalcon (Northwest Territories), the world’s largest falcon; the agile osprey (Nova Scotia), which executes dramatic dives to catch fish; the regal common loon, a true Canadian icon (Ontario); and the boisterous blue jay (Prince Edward Island), herald of spring.

Designer Mike Savage, of Signals Design in Vancouver, struck a balance between new and old elements for this soaring sequel. Variations in colour

and background freshen the look, while many design aspects echo those of last year’s stamps. Illustrator Keith Martin returned with a similar style. To portray the unique forms of his feathered subjects, he took a deep dive into their lives – immersing himself in photos and videos to understand the mechanics of each in flight. With support from avian expert David Gray, he incorporated the complexities of each bird’s markings, through a number of iterations.

“I was struck by the similarities between the three large birds of prey: the great gray owl, the gyrfalcon and the osprey,” says Martin. “I was fascinated by the subtleties in their wing feather patterns. Their nuances make each bird unique and beautiful.”

As for a favourite, neither Martin nor Savage could decide. “It’s a moving target,” says Martin.

“When I’m working on a bird, that one is my favourite. When it’s done, I usually don’t like it. Then, time passes and I warm to it again. Today I really like the

blue jay but it will be a different one next week.” Adds Savage, “It’s tough to decide between the vibrant colour of the blue jay and dynamic pose and feather detail of the gyrfalcon. Am I allowed to flip a coin?”
