Detailed Lesson Plan in Chemistry for Grade 8

Time Frame: 4:00-5:00 ( 1 Session ) August 4, 2014

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:1. define colloids.2. identify some properties of colloids.3. cite application of properties of colloids.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a. Topic: Colloidsb. References: b.1 Exploring Life Through Science by: Bayquen, Aristea V. pp: 270-276 b.2 General Science by:Tan, Nora A. pp:1 54-159 b.3 Science And Technology by: Torres, Myrna M. and Dading T. Mandalo pp: 40-45c. Materials: For teacher: laptop, projector, visual aids For students: reference book, yellow paper, ballpend. Teaching Strategies: Discussion and Collaborative learning

III. PROCEDURE:

Teachers Activity Students Activity a. Daily Routinea.1 Greetings Good Morning Class Good Morning Maam.a.2Prayer Let us pray first. (one of the student will lead the prayer )a.3 Conditioning of the room Please pick up the pieces of (students will pick up the pieces of paper under your desk and make sure paper and check the alignment ofthat your chair is aligned in the row. their chairs)

a.4 Checking of AttendanceSay present as I call your name. (students will say present as the teacher call their names)Class, how was your day? It was great, Maam.Thats good, today wewill about to discuss what colloid is, identifysome of its properties and cite application of those properties.

b. Review of Previous Lesson But before we open the new topic, let us have a sort of review of our yesterdays lesson. Class, can you discuss what mixture is? Mixtures are made up of two or more components substances that can be separated through physical means.Exactly, thats correct! Is halo-halo a mixture?Yes Maam! How about air?Definitely Maam!Very good class!Give yourselves a Wow Galing Clap.(students will clap) c. MotivationI have prepared here a video clip regardingour next topic, I want you to watch intellectually. Class, what have you observe?A scattering of light between solution and colloids. Very good observation! What do we call to that phenomenon?Maam its Tyndall effect.Excellent!

d. Presentation of the Lesson Now, lets start with our newlesson. Can you give any idea about colloids? A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture with particles bigger than the particles of a solution but smaller than those of a suspension. Very well said. Can you give some example of it? (students will answer milk, jelly, gelatin and leche plan) Very good class! All of your answers are correct. How about cloud? Is this a colloid?Yes Maam! Absolutely, thats good! What about charcoal? No Maam! Class, charcoal is a colloid. Now class, can you identify someTyndall effect or the scattering of properties of colloids?light in a colloid producing a visiblebeam of light. Exactly! Who can give another property?Brownian movement or the erratic, random motion of the colloidal particles creating a zigzag random motion.

How about adsorption?Adsorption is the bending in thin layer of molecules to the surfaces.Very well said!Ok class, can you give at least threeThe suspension of pollen grains in application of properties of colloids?water produces Brownian movementthat helps us understand the behavior of molecules.

The significance of using charcoalin making gas masks. The brilliant colors at sunset and the blue color of the sky and the seaare caused by the thick layer of smallparticles and molecules in the atmosphere and in the sea.Very good class! All of your answers are correct!

e. Generalization: Colloid is a mixture with particles that are larger than those found in true solutions but smaller than those in suspensions. Some properties of colloids are tyndall effect, Brownian movement, and adsorption. Charcoal is can be used in gas masks because of its properties called adsorption.

f. Application: How important is the study of colloids?

IV. EVALUATION: Identify what is asked in each sentence._________1. The scattering of light in a colloid producing a visible beam of light._________2. The erratic, random motion of the colloidal particles creating a zigzag random motion._________3. Properties best explain why charcoal is used in making gas masks._________4. A mixture with particles that are larger than those found in true solutions but smaller than those in suspensions._________5. The component where another one is suspended in it.

V. ASSIGNMENT:Make an advance study of the next topic:a. grouping of colloids.b. purification of colloids.reference: Science and technology by: Amelia P. Mapa pp. 324-329
