The Canberra Region is full of optimism and potential. As we hit our stride moving into our second century, we are making a mark nationally and on the world stage – but a city is never complete. Our national capital will continue to evolve and mature and it is critical that we set goals and priorities for the future, to map out where we want to go and how we plan to get there. Destination 2030 is a blueprint to guide action for the next 15 years. It will provide direction for business, the community and government – to ensure we make the most of our assets, capitalise on opportunities, build on our strengths, and future-proof against challenges that lie ahead.

Canberra Business Chamber has a vision for Canberra in 2030 – for a city that is liveable, connected, international, agile and resilient. Building on our existing assets, these five core themes are the collective aspirations of our business community and will be drivers for action – aspirations that can only be achieved through the commitment and partnership of business, the community and government.

We know that the key to long term strength and stability is a diversified, modern, clean economy driven by a confident and successful private sector and supported by enabling and forward-thinking government policy.

Canberra Business Chamber calls on government and all political parties to work with the business community towards our vision for Canberra in 2030, to follow our roadmap, to implement change and remedy challenges, and to support the long-term economic success of our national capital.

Destination 2030

International Canberra in 2030 will be a global city increasingly recognised as a destination of choice for international visitors, as a leader in tertiary education and research and as a centre for international business.

ConnectedCanberra in 2030 will be a connected city supporting communication, collaboration and exploration.

AgileCanberra in 2030 will be a smart city that celebrates knowledge, supports learning and invests in new ideas, and is part of the global information hub.

Resilient Canberra in 2030 will be a leading sustainable city with an economy that performs through and with change, leveraging off its strengths as a liveable, international, connected and agile place to do business.20

The key to long term strength and stability is a diversified, modern economy driven by a confident and successful private sector and supported by enabling and forward-thinking government policy.

Capitalise on our Assets

Canberra is a city of many qualities, strengths which can be used as levers to achieve economic diversification and resilience, to enhance liveability and build social capital, and to progress the city towards local, national and international connectivity. Our position as a centre for governance and a hub for the region, our industry potential for innovation and sustainability, and the quality of our research, education and cultural institutions are the tools that will help us to achieve our vision for Canberra in 2030.

• Create a coalition of existing organisations to establish a Committee for Canberra to champion the city and region and provide independent research and advocacy to support Canberra as a leading liveable city for all.

• Support major infrastructure and development projects to drive economic growth and new business opportunities.

• Deliver an Asian Market strategy for trade, business and tourism with quality supporting infrastructure.

• Procure, build and operate the Australia Forum.

• Leverage connections with national and international representative bodies to build Canberra’s status as a globally recognised city for business, trade and education.

• Upgrade regional road and transport infrastructure to ensure efficient and safe links within the Canberra Region and to support growth in business and freight including upgrade of the Kings Highway and duplication of the Barton Highway.

• Enhance the ACT Government procurement frameworks to increase the opportunities for small business to bid for, and win, core ACT Government work through transparent weighting criteria.

First Steps

• Develop centres for excellence in areas where we have a competitive advantage including promotion of leading technical and research organisations in cyber security.

• Achieve status as a Resilient City.

• Work collaboratively to develop a city that supports all citizens, including vulnerable members of the community, to prosper.

In our Roadmap to 2030 there are many actions.

Of these actions, this is where we start.
