Pen Pals Seen 'N' Heard T hanks, Ivan, for the “Star Track” link on the Facebook wallpost of “Music Clubs and Gangs of 80s-90s.” I know you have done a good job to promote music, amongst the youngsters, in the 80s-90s. I really appre- ciate that, and your work was, and is still, fan- tastic, great and awesome. I now need to touch on the per- formance of Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards night. It was a shocking, horrible and disgusting performance, in front of millions of viewers, world wide, that particular night. My family members were watch- ing this show as they wanted to see the glamorous and beautiful per- formances from the stars of the music world. Kids love Miley, because of her fantastic acts on “Hanna Montana” and some of my nephews and nieces had huge posters of her in their bed- room walls. But now they are ashamed to talk about her. I call Cyrus’ performance at the VMA cheap publicity. Yes, of course, people will talk about this nasty performance for many years to come, but they need to know that Miley Cyrus is one of the present day shameless singers, in the world music scene. Adrian Channa Manoj More brickbats for Miley Cyrus R emember the good old days of the sixties and seventies in unspoiled Sri Lanka? If you do, then some of the foremost nostalgic memo- ries that will come flooding by will be the glory days of the Spitfires and the Jetliners who were the bands that dominated the music scene, at that point in time. Well, the reformed Spitfires were in Australia last month, and Trevine Rodrigo, of the Lankan Times Melbourne, checked out their Melbourne performance and sent us the following report: The reformed Spitfires took Australia by storm, entertaining sell out crowds in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. They were all treated to a vintage display by the evergreen performers, none of whom appeared to have lost that magic touch of so long ago. Dalreen Suby, Desmond De Silva, Budrin Musafer, Sohan Peiris and Maxi Rosairo slipped into gear as though they were back in their heyday and, almost without blemish, churned out several hits from an era where the music produced then will never die. To pick a crowd favourite would be most unkind, but it must be said that the unending and the unlimited exu- berance of Desmond de Silva was a treat to watch, and he went on to show why, even after 50 years in the business, he is still a class act. He led the group with great dexterity and the others, who are professionals in their own right, blend- ed perfectly to give music lovers a musical treat that will not be easily forgotten. Ronnie Boustead (lead guitar and vocals), Felix Fernando (bass guitar and vocals), Mohan Wimalasuriya (organ and vocals), Laurensz Manricks (rhythm guitar) and Hassan Musafer (drums) complet- ed the star-studded line up. Melbourne’s number one band, Replay 6, began the night’s proceedings before the Spitfires swung into action. And Esric and Sandra Jackson set the mood by producing music from way back then to set the tempo, creating the right the mood for the Spitfires. Yes, what an exhilarating night it turned out to be. M iley Cyrus’ new controversial ‘Wrecking Ball’ video breaks records for the most views in 24 hours, receiving 19 million views on Vevo. The risqué singer broke the record that was previously held by British boy band, One Direction, who’s single, ‘Best Song Ever,’ received 12.3 million views on its first day of release, back in July, 2013. Miley’s eclipsed the previous record for a number of reasons and it is doubtful the actual single ‘Wrecking Ball’, is one of them. The spectacle, known as the ‘wrecking ball video’, sees the former Disney star mount a wrecking ball naked, as well as using a sledge hammer in a provocative fashion whilst singing about heartbreak. Surely there could be easier ways to illus- trate a heartbreak than using hardware tools? ‘Wrecking Ball’ is Miley’s second single off her upcoming album ‘Bangerz’ which will be released on October 8th, 2013, and the 20-year-old took to twitter to thank her fans for her record breaking video. The video also can only remind the pub- lic of Miley’s R-rated VMA performance with Robin Thicke earlier last month dur- ing a rendition of Thicke’s summer anthem, ‘Blurred Lines’. The Hanna Montana star ‘twerked’ and grinded all over Thicke and most shocking- ly began rubbing a foam hand on the crotch of the married man whilst wearing a tiny nude-coloured bikini. Miley defended her performance, claim- ing she wanted to “make history.” Miley may have achieved exactly what she wanted as her performance will stick in the public’s minds for a long time to come, which may have caused momentum for her video to break the most viewed record. A perfectly executed plan or is it just down to nothing more than ‘sex sells.’ Dalreen Suby Maxi Rosairo Miley Cyrus Desmond de Silva
