1 CONCEPT

Background

Many things are beautified and packaged well. What you see may not be what it actually is. How should we judge a thing?

Objective

Purpose StatementPeople’s values seem to be affected by what we see, the people surrounding us, the media, as well as our habits and past experience. We may pay less attention to its content. The purpose of my project is to encourage people looking deeper on things instead of judge them apparently.

Background

The nature of packaging is similar to my concept.

Background

•Makes the product look more attractive•Conceal the truth or weakness•Appearance not consistent with content

Packaging

Objective

Scope StatementMy project is to create an package which its exterior would mislead audiences’ feeling about its content. Audiences have to open a number of layers to reach the innermost layer. I hope audience can have surprising experience after opening my package.

2DEVELOPMENT

Motivation

Process1 Investigate different materials to find out what material would be more interesting

2 Investigate different ways of packaging and wrapping to provide a surprising experience of finding out the deeper content ___of things to my audiences (for example, stickers, scissure for tearing, ___zip, Velcro and so on)

Research

Mislead the audience

It looks like a toy submarine. When you open it, you will find that it is a tea set. The TeaSub submerges tea leaves to the bottom of your cup, creating the perfect infusion of your tea.

Optical illusion

Research

This reference is an anti-theft lunch bag. When putting the bread into the lunch bag, it looks like it is moldy. However, when taking out the bread from the lunch bag, you will see that the bread is normal. It is a visual effect of the transparent lunch bag.

Research

Optical illusion

It is the visual effect of the transparent package.

Research

Interact with audience

The image match with the habits of people make fun.

Process (1st stage)

Motivation

1 Audiences cannot get what is it2 They have to tear the packaging to see the words or image inside

Experiment 1

Motivation

Experiment 21 Use transparent material to make overlapped image2 When move up and down the transparent slice, it create two different words in opposite meaning.

Motivation

1 Due to habits or past experience, people would tear the upper part. 2 They may think that the triangle is a instruction. However, they can only tear the bottom one.3 I want to tell audiences that following habits without thinking is not always right.

Experiment 3

Motivation

1 Illusion image to mislead audiences.2 Only the part looks like curve line can be teared.

Experiment 4

Motivation

1 The illusion effect is too oriented to graphic design.

2 Too straight forward to do a packaging with its exterior different from its content

Conclusion

Process (2nd stage)

Try several kinds of materials and change their form

/Paper/ plastic bag/ wax/ rubber-band/ sand/

Motivation

1 Try to change the form of plastic bag

2 Cut it into small pieces and reform it

Experiment 11 Try to change the form of plastic bag

2 Cut it into small pieces and reform it

Motivation

1 Boil the wax until it become transparent

2 Put a star into it

3 After cooling, the wax become solid again

4 The star is hidden

Experiment 2

Motivation

Motivation

1 Wax can be used as the core layer of the package

2 Its different form can used for store a core message in the innermost layer

Conclusion

Process (3rd stage)

1 Observe different common ways of packaging

2 People know how to use it by their habits, not because of any instructions

Final Deliverable

1 The package would consist of 6 layers2 Audience have to open all of them to reach the innermost layer3 On every layer, the way of opening is different from our habit4 When they reach the innermost layer, they will see a slogan

4REFLECTION

Reflection

We all know that deciding things by its exterior or by experience is not good. However, we still do so sometimes. It is hard for me to change people’s habit. At the beginning, I decided to design an artwork which its exterior is opposite to its content. But I think the outcome is not so surprising to audience. So I start to change the way that is different from our habit, and hope to bring out interesting outcome.
