What is UI and GUI?

1)UI(User Interface)

➢ It is the means by which the user and a computer system interact, in

particular the use of input devices and software.

2)GUI(Graphical User Interface)

➢ A graphical user interface (GUI) is a way to communicate to the computer

application using graphical symbols.

➢ It uses pictures to represent the input and output of a program.

➢ The program displays icons, buttons, dialog boxes, MENUS etc.

➢ The user gives commands by selecting and clicking on icons displayed on the

screen

➢ E.g. (ALL windows Operating System)Windows Xp Windows 7,Windows 10 etc.

Operating System➢ An operating system is a system software that controls all the basic activities

of a computer system.

➢ Booting-When you switch on the computer, the windows operating system

loads into the computers memory

➢ It acts as a intermediate between the user and the computer hardware

SELECTING AND DE-SELECTING ICONS

❑ To select adjacent icons, press the Shift

Key and click the icons that you wish to

select.

❑ To deselect an icon or icons, just click

any empty space on the desktop.

❑ To select Non-Adjacent Icons, press the

Ctrl key and then click the icons.

❑ To deselect an icon or icons, just click

any empty space on the desktop.

❑ To select Non-Adjacent Icons, press the

Ctrl key and then click the icons.

❑ To select a bunch of icons at once, click

an empty area of the desktop near the

icons and drag the mouse.

❑ Select with the rectangle that appears

and release the mouse button.

Desktop management

➢DESKTOP: The main screen which comes after the window

welcome screen appears is called as Desktop.

➢ ICONS: The desktop contains small pictures with names

such as Computer, Recycle Bin, and many more.

➢ Icons represent different program, files, or folders.

Arranging icons on the desktop

Right-click an empty area of the desktop.

In the menu that opens, click View

Click the Auto arrange icons option.

To be able to move the icons again, you will have to unlock the icons.

For this ,click the AUTO ARRANGE ICONS again such that the check mark next to it disappears.

Change wallpaper and screensaver

Wallpaper-The background image that you see on the desktop is called as the wallpaper.

Screensaver-When the computer is left idle for a certain amount of time is called as screen saver.

TaskBar

The taskbar is a long,horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen.

It contains button with icons,which tell us which programs are open on the computer.

The taskbar has the following three main sections:

❖ System Tray :It is the notification area which appears on the right of the taskbar .

❖ Quick Launch bar: It shows you which programs and files you have opened on the computer and

allows to quickly switch between them.

❖ The start button

Customizing the taskbar: Changing its position, adding icons to it or remove icons from it ,and

even hide the taskbar is called as customizing the taskbar.

❖ Move the mouse pointer to an empty space on the taskbar

❖ Click and hold the mouse button

❖ Drag the mouse pointer to any of the sides

❖ Release the mouse button

Note: Unlock the taskbar if it is locked then only you will be able to move its position

Steps to Add and remove Icons from the taskbar1. Click the start button

2. Click All Programs.Select any program you wish.

3. Right-click on the program.

4. Select the Pin to taskbar.The program icon will appear

1. To remove a program icon from the taskbar,follow these steps:

2. Right-click on the program icon.

3. A menu appears

4. Click the unpin this program from the taskbar option.The program will get removed from the taskbar.

(remember it only gets removed from taskbar not get deleted from the computer)

Minimize and restore Windows1. When a window is active (its taskbar button is highlighted),clicking its taskbar button minimizes the

window.

2. This means that the window disappears from the desktop.

3. To restore a minimized window(i.e make it show again on the desktop),click its taskbar button again.

Add and Remove Icons

1. To add a program,click the icon of the program and then drag it to the Quick Launch Bar.

2. To remove a program icon,right-click the program icon,and then click close window

Changing date and time Click the date and time button on the taskbar and follow the steps as shown in the figures below:

1. Right-click on the time in the bottom-right of the screen and select Adjust Date/Time.

2. Click on the Change date and time... button.

3. Use the arrows to the left and right of the month/year and the arrows to the right of the clock

to change the time to the correct time.

Applying a theme on windows

A windows theme is a set of background pictures,window colors,and sounds.

A theme is a broad color/style scheme that affects not only the wallpaper (background) but the color of

app folders etc

To apply a theme to your computer ,follow these steps as shown in the picture below

ADJUSTING SOUND

To adjust sound in your computer system ,click the speakers button in the notification area of the

taskbar as shown in the image below.

Working with multiple windows-

1)Aero Peek

2)ALT+Tab

I. Using Aero Peek-It is a special feature of windows 7 that allows you to navigate easily through

multiple open windows. It shows you the thumbnail of all open windows.

II. Press Windows Key +Tab to open Flip 3D.

III. While Holding the Windows key, press Tab repeatedly to go through each of the open windows

IV. Using Aero Flip 3D option: It allows you to preview all open windows in a stack

It helps you to open many document files or programs at the same time.

Using the Keyboard:

I. Press Alt+TAB to see a list of all open files.

II. Hold ALT and press tab until you have highlighted the file you want to open.

Using the Snap feature:

I. This feature is used to arrange windows side-by-side on the screen.

II. It is useful when comparing two documents or when moving filed from one place to

another.
