Li Edelkoort’s much anticipated keynote address, ‘Embryonic Architecture: The dawning of a new age,’ delighted the full-house audience at designEX yesterday. Li began her presentation with a colour forecast predicting a move towards the greening of all colours. She recommended designers place green tones in their colour palettes, as this will be a major move away from the red / orange tones so dominant over the past 20 years. The major trends presented for Autumn / Winter 15 / 16 reflected a point in history where Li sees society is still finding a new way to express itself about what the 21st century means. The trends presented concerned embracing, cuddling and feeling happy and safe. A major influence is tactility, as people need to balance their lives in front of electronic screens. From the protection and safety of the embryo and the egg, to the fibrous container of the cocoon we will seek ways to be nurtured and cuddled. Kangaroo pouches, onion layers, floating in clouds and being surrounded by sock-like tubes – the next phase of design looks towards cosy comfort. Li ended her presentation with ‘the pillow book’ – a look into the bedroom. She said the bedroom is now the most important room in the house taking focus away from kitchen and living areas. According to Li, we will spend more leisure time, entertaining, eating and working in the bedroom. Thus the bedroom will start to resemble a hotel room with open bathrooms, fires and even mini-bars, transforming into a more complete living space. Seminar tickets are still available.

The major trends presented for Autumn / Winter 15 / 16 reflected a point in

history where Li sees society is still finding a new way to express itself about what the 21st century means.

Kangaroo pouches, onion layers, floating in clouds and being surrounded by sock-like tubes – the next phase of

design looks towards cosy comfort.Li ended her presentation with ‘the pillow book’ – a look into the bedroom.

International recognition, inspiration and building relationships with potential partners, producers and commercial customers are the key benefits available for young designers in participating in international fairs according to the designEX panel discussing design fairs yesterday.

Freelance writer David Harrison facilitated the session, while the panel included designer Adam Cornish, along with curators of The Other Hemisphere Sarah King and Margot Konings of Dutch practice Organisation In Design. All agreed that the participation in international design

fairs is an important step for designers. Adam Cornish, who participated in Salone de Mobile three times, said this helped him to quickly move from a university graduate to owning his own independent studio. The relationships he established at Salone de Mobile led to him presenting a project to Alessi, which was launched last year.

Sarah King who shows her own and others work at Ventura Lambrate (held as part of Milan Design Week), said a major benefit is the profile raising at home. Margot Konings said the smaller curated sections of large fairs are a boon for young designers.

“Large brands are attracted to the smaller curated exhibition spaces,” said Margot. “They get connected to the future; to the trend setters. By connecting with young designers, they jump into a talent pool and can scout for people to form new collaborations,” she said.

So how do you select an international fair in which to participate? Adam Cornish recommends you look for the style of design fair that you are best suited, but adds “Of course Milan is always where the heavy hitters are going to be.”

As you might be aware, designEX is dedicated to supporting the next generation of the design community. Our student educational & recent graduate programme provides valuable insights into current and upcoming trends to inspire students and develop the future of our industry.

The programme which is free, features a morning and afternoon session today and is open to all tertiary students and graduates of the last 2 years in all creative industries within graphic design, interior design, architecture, exhibition design and building design.

New designers will hear from established brands and designers, leading exhibition designers and marketing professionals operating in the design space both in Australia and abroad. A real world perspective is also offered in the morning session where Tait recounts their transformation from metal-worker and manufacturer into design producer and leading furniture retailer, reflecting on the evolution of manufacturing in Australia, and their unique experience of ‘collaboration’ with some of Australia’s most exciting designers.

Natural fibres and visually stimulating fabrics are at the center of a stunning collaboration between Cotswold Furniture, Vincent Sheppard and Edit fabrics that will be showcased at designEX 2014. Created by former Vogue Living editor Sharon Storrier Lyneham, Edit fabrics renowned visionary designs can be seen in fabric design ‘Seaweed’ which has been used on the Indoor Joe Cocoon Deluxe Chair.

Another exciting release from Cotswold is the Idoles Collection, which after a positive reception at the Milan International Furniture Fair last year will be introduced to Australia at designEX 2014. From brand Fermob, the collection is an impressive body of collaborative work featuring strong design aesthetics and a fresh energy that takes the brand into a new era.

Make sure you don’t miss these inspiring showcases from Cotswold at Stand 319 in Hall 1

Stone and tiles have been a key trend identified during Day One of the designEX seminar series. So which architects and suppliers are leading the way?

Last night 130 people attended the presentation of the Australian Stone Advisory Association Architectural Stone Awards adjudicated by David Saunders of S2 Design, Lindsay Davis of Garner Davis Alex Njoo, and sponsored by Stone Initiatives. The Award criteria were established by ASAA and the Australian Institute of Architects to reward commercial and residential projects which exhibit ‘good design values’ and ‘appropriate use’ of materials.

Awards were presented for use of imported stone and Australian natural stone. Awards were presented to the project architect or sculptor, and the stone supplier. We congratulate all the winners for achieving outstanding projects.

Among our many exciting exhibitors here at designEX is Steelcase Australia, who are the global leader in the office furniture industry. They provide high performance products and services designed to help individuals, teams and organization perform better wherever work happens. They took the time out to have a quick chat with us.

What is the theme of the stand?Palette of Place, Palette of Presence, Palette of Posture.

Who designed the stand and why did you select them?Designed by Steelcase to reflect aspects of our concept of the interconnected workplace, which offers I/We spaces and Owned/Shared spaces.

What is the best way to experience the stand?Picture yourself in your everyday life at work when you go through each setting and imagine the various times of the day where each would be well suited.

What major innovations do you see for the future of office design?Companies have largely moved to full open spaces but we’ve noticed that people don’t have anywhere they can go to do focused individual work. The major innovations to come will be around ways to provide this focused space.Visit Steelcase Australia on Stand 227
