He heard the words that every yacht

designer has come to expect: "Thedesign is perfect, but... " In otherwords, something about the lines of

letting the shape dictate the interiorlayout for optimal weight distribu-tion. This boat is very well balanced.

We only had to push-the chinesdown a few inches, and there's still a

fair amount of deadrise amidships."The other intent of the design was

to make the boat relativelysimple to

build. "But I didn't want the shape to

entirely drive that function," Nevillesaid. If a metal boat is given toomuch of a commercial look, it tendsto look like a commercial vessel;in

other words, ugly and tub-like."This design, while relatively easy

to build, doesn't present itself as a

typical slab-sided metal boat," Nevillesaid. "Alot of times

commercial look and will even put

the paint on with a roller. But for notthat much extra cost, a metal boat

can look like a yacht. I don't mind

putting the boatyard to a little extrawork to add flare and shape to thehull, because it makes such a differ-ence in the overall look. We weren't

trying to hide the fact that it's steel-you can still see the ribs - but steelboats ought to look nice, too." Theresult is that CarolMarie does, in

fact, look quite nice, and while the

heavy rub rail and guardrails hintat the ship's heritage, nothing islost in aesthetics.

For weight savings, CarolMaries

superstructure is aluminum. Nevillesaid the workability of aluminum isan added benefit. The slight cost

penalty is made up for, he said, by thefact that it's easier to shape. "You can't

totally overcome the weight pn;>blemof building a metal boat - metal isheavy - but a hybrid hull is a great

way to go," Neville added.

Neville encouraged the owners toplan the vessel'sinterior to accom-

modate themselves, that is, just thetWoof them, in comfort, and notmake considerable efforts to extend

the layout to accommodate guests.

"The reality is that most couples arecruising by themselves," Neville said."Yetmost boats are designed toaccommodate six people, yet none ofthe accommodations are very good."

CarolMarie has an ample ownerstateroom and a single, large headcompartment with a real shower stall.

After CarolMarie launched in

2005, a second 47-footer followed,

built on spec, and was launched by

Custom Steel Boats this past summer. The sister vesselwill be shown at

Trawler Fest in Solomons, Md., in

September and at the Annapolis showin October. Look for CarolMarie,

meanwhile, its bold pilothouse andhigh bow flare nosing the swellslike athoroughbred, headed for the islandssome time soon.
