T he security of a steelboat is undeniable. And
one that has been
designed as a ship, albeita small one, is secure indeed. Carol
Marie is such a vessel. Its deep, hatd-chine steel hull with its high bow,
heavy-duty railing and bridge-likewindows in the pilothouse offer thesea-keepingattributes and all thepeaceof mind of a seagoing rug-
although a very luxurious one.CarolMarie, designed by Charles
Nevilleof Centreville, Md., and built
byCustom Steel Boats in Merritt,
N.C., actually began life in the pagesofa book In the early 1990s, the
classicVryagingUnder Power,byRobert Beebe, was being revised andupdated by Jim Leishman, co-founder of the Nordhavn trawler line.
Leishman asked Neville whether he'd
contribute a current design. Nevilleresponded enthusiastically and sub-mitted drawings for a 39-footer thathe'ddrawn for a Gulf Coast dient.
Fiveyears after the releaseof the
book,Neville said he recalls getting ahone call from a prospective buyerho'd seen the drawings in the book.

He heard the words that every yacht
designer has come to expect: "Thedesign is perfect, but... " In otherwords, something about the lines of
. the vesselinspired the person, but hewanted to customize the vesselwith
personal touches. He alsowanted a 'slightly larger vessel. The prospectiveowner wanted a vessel that would
operate from the Alabama coast with
trips planned to the islands. Nevillewas happy to oblige.
After some back and forth, the
boat came out true to its originalshape. Neville said the temptation forowners to cram all manner of gear onboard often takes over the design.
process, requiring considerable newdrawings that press the chines lowerand lower. "It's a conventional hull
with a nicely balanced shape," Nevillesaid. "It's very easy for these boats to

letting the shape dictate the interiorlayout for optimal weight distribu-tion. This boat is very well balanced.
We only had to push-the chinesdown a few inches, and there's still a
fair amount of deadrise amidships."The other intent of the design was
to make the boat relativelysimple to
build. "But I didn't want the shape to
entirely drive that function," Nevillesaid. If a metal boat is given toomuch of a commercial look, it tendsto look like a commercial vessel;in
other words, ugly and tub-like."This design, while relatively easy
to build, doesn't present itself as a
typical slab-sided metal boat," Nevillesaid. "Alot of times

commercial look and will even put
the paint on with a roller. But for notthat much extra cost, a metal boat
can look like a yacht. I don't mind
putting the boatyard to a little extrawork to add flare and shape to thehull, because it makes such a differ-ence in the overall look. We weren't
trying to hide the fact that it's steel-you can still see the ribs - but steelboats ought to look nice, too." Theresult is that CarolMarie does, in
fact, look quite nice, and while the
heavy rub rail and guardrails hintat the ship's heritage, nothing islost in aesthetics.
Aluminum superstructure
For weight savings, CarolMaries
superstructure is aluminum. Nevillesaid the workability of aluminum isan added benefit. The slight cost
penalty is made up for, he said, by thefact that it's easier to shape. "You can't
totally overcome the weight pn;>blemof building a metal boat - metal isheavy - but a hybrid hull is a great
way to go," Neville added.

Neville encouraged the owners toplan the vessel'sinterior to accom-
modate themselves, that is, just thetWoof them, in comfort, and notmake considerable efforts to extend
the layout to accommodate guests.
"The reality is that most couples arecruising by themselves," Neville said."Yetmost boats are designed toaccommodate six people, yet none ofthe accommodations are very good."
CarolMarie has an ample ownerstateroom and a single, large headcompartment with a real shower stall.
After CarolMarie launched in
2005, a second 47-footer followed,
built on spec, and was launched by
Custom Steel Boats this past summer. The sister vesselwill be shown at
Trawler Fest in Solomons, Md., in
September and at the Annapolis showin October. Look for CarolMarie,
meanwhile, its bold pilothouse andhigh bow flare nosing the swellslike athoroughbred, headed for the islandssome time soon.
