ClubhouseProject: Conservatory at Hammock BeachLocation: Palm Coast, Fla.Architect: MAI Design Group

Design Statement: Set on one of Florida’s most beautiful and challenging golf courses, the Conservatory Clubhouse is an oasis for golfers preparing for a day on the links or wrapping one up. The formal, two-story club-house is modeled after the private conservatories built in England in the early 1800s. Materials include a combina-tion of delicately detailed exposed structural steel, cast stone, and classic columns and arches—all tied together with a soaring, two-story glass atrium at the heart of the building. Because of the tropical climate, MAI used thermal-resistant glass for the project, allowing light to flood the facility without overheating it. Outside, the Conservatory is anchored to the earth with a cut-stone base, Doric-style columns, and cast-stone balustrades that add to the sense of symmetry, formality, and grace. A series of stone staircases cascade to the pool, gardens, and greens, creating a smooth transition between building and landscape. Inside, the interiors feature a British-island design, with a combination of columns, wainscoting, ceil-ing fans, furniture, and fabrics that hearken to living in the Spice Islands.

ClubhouseProject: Curahee ClubLocation: Toccoa, Ga.Architect: NCG Architects

Design Statement: At the Curahee Club, a 1,200-acre, private golf, lake, and mountain community, the clubhouse serves as the main amenity and is sited atop a ridge com-manding 360-degree views of the mountains, lake, and award-winning golf course. The building is a sprawling blend of native stone, cedar shakes, and copper accents. To emulate the great golf clubhouses that have evolved over the years, the design was intentionally created to evoke a timeless character that belies its youth. Inside, the interior designer has meticulously integrated the history and culture of the area into an overall design that defines casual elegance and warmth. Rich woods, wainscoting, vaulted ceilings with massive, exposed beams and cavern-ous stone fireplaces combine to meet the owner’s man-date—that the clubhouse provide a second-home feeling for members and guests for decades to come.

Design Statement: A stunning example of the new Las Vegas, Grandview is sleek and contemporary with an element of fun. Each 680-square-foot, one-bedroom unit has the same floor plan with mirrored units sharing a vestibule. Working with the architect, Creative Design increased the living area by shifting the wall and soffit from its location on previous phases of this project, allowing them to add a large credenza for storage and a 42-inch, flat-panel television.

The boutique-hotel feel features rich, vibrant reds on one side and spa-like greens and golds on the other. Bedrooms feature duvets and tone-on-tone linens, while kitchens have granite countertops and espresso-finished cabinetry with modern hardware. Two sinks in each bathroom flank a drop-down vanity with a bench.

Design Statement: Situated on 300 acres, and neighboring the historic National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Course, Sebonack has been carved out of land which seems to have been long-destined to become a golf course. The holes offer panoramic views of Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond. The visual impact of the water vistas competes for the golfer’s eye with the rolling fairways, expan-sive bunkers and waste dunes, and undulating greens that pres-ent tricky swales and burrows. Meant to look as if manicured by time, Sebonack appears to have fashioned itself from the wild terrain.

The club’s locker room carries on the traditional theme. The custom-made cherry lockers by Legacy Lockers feature a carving of the Sebonack logo, which was derived from a distinctive “S” found on the original estate’s window shutters. The artwork was commissioned to local artists.

Design Statement: MSI’s objective was to build a family-friendly playground for Give Kids the World Village, operated by a non-profit organization that fulfills the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. The playground, the world’s first and only life-sized version of the beloved children’s game Can-dyland, was built to honor the memory of Matthew McGowan, a GKTW wish child.

The plan was developed from initial drawings created by Boundless Playgrounds, a design group that creates accessible playground designs. ITEC, a provider of other show elements at GKTW Village, then started to look at the show aspect of the playground. With the goal of recreating a three-dimensional environment, ITEC brought in MSI to design both the hard-scape and landscape. The groups came together with many other engineering and show designers to create this exciting and magical place in less than six months.

Design Statement; The 17-acre resort’s backyard is the 800-square-mile Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which welcomes 9,000,000 visitors annually. Complement-ing this natural background is the lodge and resort itself, which has 60 log-cabin homes, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and play and game areas throughout.

The 60 two- or three-bedroom homes feature a master suite with whirlpool bath, wood flooring, exposed beams, a stone fireplace, loft with a pool table, and a screened-in back porch with hot tub.

The 66-by-37-foot swimming pool has two grottos, one featuring a walk path under the waterfall, the other with waterfall pouring into a jetted pool. The beach-style entrance is perfect for toddlers to wade into the pool, which has a 1,000-square-foot deck with an adjacent stone fire pit.

Residential LivingProject: The Village at Northstar Location: Lake Tahoe, Calif.Architect: OZ Architecture

Design Statement: The Village at Northstar was the first phase of sweeping improvements to this 8,000-acre, highly-ranked ski area. Iron Horse North and South residence build-ings were the first phase of development addressing key arrival points for resort guests and skiers. The phase mixes underground parking, retail, 72 residential units, a residents’ fitness club, and the slope-side owners’ club. Phase II features 28 residences in The Great Bear Lodge and also includes a 40,000-square-foot skier-service building tucked under the ski slope with ticketing, skier lockers, restaurants, day care, theater, and retail. Adjacent to both buildings is an outdoor ice rink with fire pits and cabanas for après-ski enjoyment. The final phase of the village includes 111 residential units and a private residence club, as well as res-taurants, retail, fitness, and spa amenities. This phase features the plaza connection to a “ski beach” and integrates gondola access. Also planned are three Hyatt Vacation Club buildings.

Design Statement: Mohonk Mountain House, a National Historic Landmark, opened a 30,000-square-foot spa wing blending environmentally conscious design with a natural setting. More than 200 windows overlook 2,200 acres. Two 80-foot-long verandas connect to a solarium and provide breathtaking views. Local timber beams, cedar shingles, and native foliage bring the outside in.

The building is “terraced” into the Ridge, lowering its profile, reducing its mass, and allowing for greater protec-tion of the surrounding Shawangunk Ridge. The stone walls, fireplaces, and retaining walls were made from 600 tons of quartz conglomerate excavated from the site. A geothermal system maintains the building temperature and eliminates on-site emissions. A 2,000-square-foot “green roof” garden terrace helps insulate the wing, reduc-ing energy use, and provides a venue for birds and but-terflies, as well as yoga classes and meditation. Highlights include 16 treatment rooms, an outdoor heated mineral pool, a salon, a fitness center, a yoga/motion studio, and an indoor pool.

Mohonk Mountain House has been owned and oper-ated by the Smiley family since 1869. The first addition in over 100 years, the spa wing honors the resort’s commit-ment to remain “the same, only better.”

Design Statement: Counsilman-Hunsaker and Hast-ings & Chivetta Architects designed the Student Aquatic Center to be physically and thematically intertwined with a tropical-themed leisure/activity pool and a cutting-edge competition pool.

A vanishing-edge pool, surrounded by rockscaping, waterfalls, palm-studded gardens, and floor-to-ceiling win-dows, creates the perfect spot for socializing. Those yearn-ing for pure relaxation can visit the 12-person whirlpool spa. A dramatic bouldering wall across the west side of the pool presents adventurous rock climbing above the water, while an indoor zip line spanning the pool let students ride along a wire before dropping into the pool. Other elements are an island-style lagoon and a six-lane, 25-yard pool for competitive events or lap swimming.

Design Statement: The African-themed resort includes 12 one- and two-story buildings featuring five-bedroom units. The design emulates a sophisticated African village with deliberately aged and themed synthetic stucco exteriors, eucalyptus-detailed window canopies, curved corners with faux-distressed brick, and unique peeled-cedar balcony supports. Beyond the striking exterior, units have custom carved elephant images on the entry doors and tribal artifact accessories. A vaulted entry opens onto a great room domi-nated by a marble fireplace and inviting leather seating. The knotty alder slab dining table continues the rustic expression, yet contrasts with contemporary clean lines in the entertainment kitchen, de-signed to accommodate up to 20 guests in each unit. Luxury bubble tubs adjoin each bedroom for suite-style privacy.

The lower level has a multitude of entertainment possibili-ties—a full bar, a home theater with reclining seats, a fireplace with conversation area, a pool table, a poker table, electronic darts, and a walkout patio to an eight-person hot tub. These create that “get-away” feel, while staying close to the resort’s indoor waterpark.

Design Statement: Atlantis, The Palm opened its doors in September 2008 with a central feature, Aquaventure, a 42-acre waterpark, that’s unrivaled in the Middle East. Aquaventure’s water slides include two that drop riders through clear acrylic tunnels submerged in a shark-filled lagoon and three ‘Master Blaster’ slides. Surrounding the slides is a river-ride sys-tem with a 1.4 mile rapids loop that lifts riders in their tubes to an upper level where they traverse sections of whitewater rapids interspersed with calmer sections and large zero-entry pools. The ‘Torrent’ area of the river propels riders on a wave surge more than six-feet high. In addition to children’s water play areas and two resort pools, there’s an 11-million-gallon aquatic habitat, home to more than 65,000 sea creatures. The centerpiece Ambassador Lagoon is modeled as the sunken streets of the mythical Atlantis. The discovery continues in The Lost Chambers where each exhibit features different sea creatures. The Boardwalk is designed to pay tribute to the spectacular beaches of Atlantic City, Ocean City, Coney Island, and Rehoboth Beach. The seven-story high East Coast Waterworks water play structure can boast being the largest in the world. Following the park’s addition, attendance hit an all-time high of 2.7 million in one year.
