FabLabs trendFabLabs trend

Coined in 2001 in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology term FabLab describes an idea of a workshop where passionates can experiment with methods of digital fabrication. The trend rose in popularity partially due to developments in 3D printing, but also in laser cutters.

In my project I wanted to employ methods avail-able in university’s workshop to fabricate geome-try of a curved wall.

Work on Yogacenter in Rhossili Bay directed my in-terest in the technology of curved concrete walls. I used the analogy between bending of walls and bending of yoga practitioners’ bodys as a part of my design process. As a part of seminars in ILEK In-stitute I observed a common usage of human body determined curvatures, like the ones in a stuttgart U-Bahn train.

3D ModellingBy employing a 3D modelling software I created a model with highly developed surface. In order to find a mechanically efficient form I tested a range of geometries using a simplified finite ele-mente technique.

Turning into a waffle structure

Using a plug-in, Grasshopper I transformed the geometry into a number of sections with teeth in half of their length. Putting them to-gether piece by piece I could construct the mold for plaster casting.
