1st year graduate studio | Individual project for entire design process

Urban site in downtown Roanoke, VirginiaProject reintroduces passenger rail travel back to a historically prominent railroad city

Station must provide place for ticketing, waiting, and boarding passenger trains Building serves as a welcoming gateway for incoming visitors to Roanoke

Passenger station located above the railways on axis with Jefferson Street, a historically prominent street for the cityLocation reconnects the two halves of the city previously divided by the tracks

Elevated position creates unique vantage point from which to view passing trainsElevated main level conceived as an extension of the street with freestanding brick rooms housing various functions

Central brick tower houses elevator to platform below and creates symbolic gateway to the waiting area and platform beyondA dramatic coffered concrete vault shelters the main level creating a grand public space for Roanoke

Coffering pattern inspired by trusswork of nearby rail bridges

Graduate School of DesignFirst year graduate studio | Individual project for entire design process

Sited on prominent corner in downtown Roanoke, Virginia across from the Taubman Art MuseumSite includes open corner as well as infill between two turn of the century brick buildings

Facilities include graduate school of design as well as 20 student apartmentsSchool requires studio space, classrooms, computer/print labs, workshops, gallery space, library, and auditorium

Interested in the interplay of massive concrete walls and lighter frame-making to create spaceSchool and apartment tower rest on a concrete plinth which houses the gallery space, auditorium, and workshops

Plinth set back at sidewalk allowing the wood frame to rest on ground level, creating a colonnadeTimber framed school on the corner is separated from infill residence tower but share public space on top of the plinth

Building welcomes the visitor onto the plinth and into the school from both street frontsTimber frame of the school surrounds concrete service cores at the rear for clear distinction between service and served space

Central atrium in the school illuminates and creates a sense of community amongst students on different levels

Family Residence &Recording Studio

Hypothetical urban setting of individual mixed use buildings - single family residence and small businessLong narrow site with longer sides defined by party walls; narrow residence facade with business facade opposite

Small business = Recording studioResidence requirements: Family room, kitchen & dining, master suite, 2 kids’ bedrooms, guest bedroom,-

game room, single car garage - All with plenty of natural light and ventilationRecording studio requirements: Large studio space, various smaller studio spaces of varying shapes/sizes,-

mixing room, reception/office - All secluded from sound & vibration

Design conceived as rectangular volumes arranged according to individual needs and overall compositionConsiderations of daylighting, ventilation, privacy, openness, outdoor access, cohesiveness and aesthetics were all intertwined

Light well cuts through center of volume providing natural light to lower levelsRecording studio located mostly below grade for added separation from urban noise and vibrationCreated various recording spaces, experimenting with size and shape for various effects on sound

Heavily insulated soundproof window allows passers-by to watch musicians play in the main studio and fills the space with natural light

Exterior finish is mostly plaster with expanses of glassBusiness facade stair volume clad in a cedar wood screen

Interior finishes of residence are gypsum board and plaster in addition to patterns of woodRecording studio walls are sand-filled CMU block with interior finish of a varying pattern of sound-

absorbent foam and cedar wood panels

1st year graduate studio | Individual project

Semi-urban site in downtown Blacksburg, Virginia at the edge of the Virginia Tech campusProject was to redesign the edge of campus along College Avenue

Must define the edge of Virginia Tech while responding to small businesses opposite the streetProject remains a continuing exercise in design yet to be completed

Project thought of as a ruin that one would stumble upon in the woodsA two-way stage becomes the focal point of an ampitheater defined by massive curved stone retaining walls/benches

Two massive brick piers support the wooden roof structure of the new stageStage and ampitheater aligned on axis with the Lyric Theater, a historically significant fixture on College Avenue

Edge defining brick ledges and wooden panels cascade out from the massive piersTo the west, beginning at the retension pond and terminating at Squires Student Center, simple wooden decking and fencing redefine the street’s character

Changes in paving provide more accessible road crossing

Urban site in the arts district of downtown Dallas, TexasProgram included hotel, residential units, conference center, restaurant, pedestrian shopping alley, adequate parking

Must have a connection between the museum district to the southeast and the soon to be completed park to the northwest

Hotel and residential tower separated and canted to allow central atrium and 360 deg. viewsPedestrian pathway cuts site diagonally establishing connection between museums and park

Shops and restaurants along pedestrian path continue the urban fabricDramatic translucent screens shade the tower and peel away at the gound surface to shelter the pedestrian path

Sliding Barn DoorIndependent Study | Fall 2011

Door designed with interest in barn style sliding doorsInexpensive materials were chosen as a testament to their potential

Door supported on standard stud wall with minimal impact on finish materialStandard pine, birch plywood, aluminum blanks, and pulleys used

Pine structural frame with grooves allows plywood panel infillDowels connect the members of the frame

Aluminum sliding rail passes through the structure of the door as it rolls on pulleysPulley wheels mounted to aluminum strips flush in the door frame

Rail rests on wall-mounted pine supports which articulate forces acting upon them
